Do you still use Excel to track this portfolio? If so, How do you track the buy price when you make changes and sell something?

When something gets bought, it gets a credit and BTC a debit. When something gets sold, it gets a debit and BTC a credit. Prices are EOD and updated daily.

BTC and LTC are recovering steadily again so your portfolio is probably heading back towards $90k again, OP?

Until yesterday. Cheesy    …but the damage to the portfolio wasn’t as much as I had expected.

HR, not sure this question has been asked or answered before,  do you only trade on poloniex? Why don't you look on other exchanges, Bittrex as example? Bittrex have more variety and good altcoin than Poloniex

I haven't traded on Poloniex since the delisting scandal back in May. I'm working mainly with Bittrex and BitShares now, but also have accounts with Kraken and Cryptopia.

I'm not much of a trader at all, but I might do some rebalancing from time to time. Fingers crossed!

That makes two of us! Balanced portfolio risk management has really helped me a great deal and hopefully it'll do the same for you.

@everyone, Great to see your interest! But keep in mind that we are at some fairly lofty valuations, especially in BTC, and that we’ll probably see more interesting prices for new positions somewhere down the road. Not a big deal if you’ve just come from fiat since there are great hedging vehicles like BitUSD, SBD, and USDT in crypto for when the time comes.
82  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EOS - Asynchronous Smart Contract Platform - (Dan Larimer of Bitshares/Steem) on: September 07, 2017, 10:48:56 AM

noted, thanks for sharing.

could you go into more details about

" STEEM ended up with a hugely unfair initial distribution and continues to be heavily skewed towards those who benefited from that very overt intentional "fast mine"" ??

or point me to a link?

Gees, you know, I did a google search for "Steem fastmine" and the first related return (2nd in the list of results) takes you to a very representative post. As you'll find, there were/are various threads on the subject, but I thought it quite coincidental that this particular post came back as my first search result. Since there is no one place where this is "documented", you'll need to research and do some reading.

Since it seems a little unbelievable, I'm going to post the google search and let you click on "Steemit how can this thing be workable long term? - Bitcoin Talk" yourself. EDIT: since the results change a bit with the link posted, I've linked the post directly. Still only just a starting point for you.

https://www.google.com/search?dcr=0&source=hp&q=steem+fastmine&oq=steem+fastmine&gs_l=psy-ab.3..35i39k1.1394.1394.0.2480.2.1.0.0.0.0.136.136.0j1.1.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..1.1.134.0.XykvCfNL-8s

As an aside, it's interesting to see how Steemit is actually overcoming all those initial obstacles to success that jwinterm (a long time and well respected BCT contributor) mentioned in that post - it truly speaks to just how good the base product really is. I guess the hope here is that we'll end up saying something similar someday about EOS.  Smiley
83  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [XMG] MAGI | CPU mining | mPoW | mPoS | [MagiPay] on: September 06, 2017, 06:40:50 PM
1. let magi reward fluctuate and be random to some degree but following an average depending on network hash for the last 12 hrs or so. The randomness of the reward but with a target average would benefit miners who mine long term and not botnets who only jump when reward is high and leave as soon as it is low. Because rewards go up and down they are left with one choice. Continuously farm or not to farm at all.

I think a 12 hour average might be enough, in and of itself. It would certainly eliminate hopping, I would think, and benefit loyal miners. Of course, the assumption is that it would be something like DigiShield, just slightly modified. But, then again, if block discovery time is longer as diff climbs, that is already a reward reduction, isn't it? So the two together are somewhat redundant. Not sure about this. Thinking out loud as it were.

Here's a reddit post on DigiShield: https://www.reddit.com/r/Digibyte/comments/213t7b/what_is_digishield_how_it_works_to_retarget/

Also, with regards to increasing rewards with increased network activity, and the opposite, decreasing rewards with less activity (not sure if I've correctly understood what's been said on this, so if I've misunderstood, just disregard this), AidBit tried that and died a fairly quick death.

85  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EOS - Asynchronous Smart Contract Platform - (Dan Larimer of Bitshares/Steem) on: September 06, 2017, 11:46:51 AM
While I recognize the legal declaration that EOS tokens have no value, has there been any public statements that they will? The potential for EOS seems so huge that almost no one wouldn't invest in it if they could, but this legal stuff is really killing me. That would make this project a total gamble. Did they put that in there just in case the project fails to cover their asses, or do they really intend to issue EOS coins once they have a working blockchain platform?

To my knowledge they haven't made any public statements that they will - it seems as though it would contradict the intentional steps they've taken as precautionary measures.

Two possible approaches:
  • Gamble on the promise with the hopes of being rewarded with a gain that is commensurate with the additional risk taken
or
  • Wait until after the official EOS blockchain is released next summer and acquire actual EOS tokens/coins. You'll miss you on some gains but surely not the bulk of long-term value

Given that block.one/Dan seem to be motivated more by creating a game-changing platform than by making investors wealthy, I don't think there is a high likelihood of them providing any statement to allay the fears of prospective investors.

Not trolling, but there are a couple of details that I think should be added to this.

FAQ https://eos.io/faq.html

2. Who is building the EOS.IO Software?

"block.one, a Cayman Islands exempted company,"

23. Where do the proceeds from the EOS Token distribution go?

"Proceeds from the EOS Token distribution will be the revenue of block.one."

One of the big philosophical debates surrounding STEEM was whether or not you can call something a scam if they are openly telling you exactly what they're doing? STEEM ended up with a hugely unfair initial distribution and continues to be heavily skewed towards those who benefited from that very overt intentional "fast mine", but is recovering as early "whales" are cashing out (Dan Larimer included - https://steemdown.com/ ) and will likely do quite well in the future even though a very few made off with the early riches. Everything here looks very similar, perhaps even a little "shadier" since with this one you're betting solely on the man's "good word", and that in spite of there not being a single word out of his mouth about it.

Just saying. It is what it is.

86  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XMG] Coin Magi | CPU mining | PoS-II | PoM | Unique BLK reward | [MagiPay] on: September 06, 2017, 11:23:58 AM
How exactly is pow exploited ? I'm new to this coin.

XMG POW is unique in the idea that high network hashrate generate less POW blockreward

the origin of that idea was to remove a arms race in mining gear and allow each normal dude with a single CPU in his PC take part in mining

but clever people found out that there is a timewindow in the diff ajusting mining reward adjusting waves
where diff is high and rewards are high too

thats because the adjusting algorhytm of mining rewards reduction have a delay

so what happens is big miners with botnets or access to company unused CPU capacity or even private GPU miners
mine fast a few blocks with high rewards until rewards adjusting kicks in start to decrease the rewards
then stop mining and the normal 24/7 miners have to mine the high diff low reward blocks

this leads to a big share of POW coin rollout goes into hands of few who mine in waves
and the many 24/7 miners have to mine the low reward high diff blocks alone

i trust in joes abilities to fix POW and come closer to the original vision

Is this still where we are?

Why not a diff adjustment like DigiShield or DGW (Dark Gravity Wave), everything slows down as hashrate rises, a vice versa, and let it be?

AFAIK, it is not possible for the network, to distinguish a pool from a solo miner.

Especially if we're talking about a botnet!  Cheesy
88  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Turn $10,000 into 1 Million on: September 06, 2017, 10:53:01 AM
What was your prediction about Steem because many people don't have positive opinion about the Steem. It is possible for Steem to drive the market to increase it's price because we are seeing the same value for many months.

All Alts have been crushed these last couple of months in BTC terms. It's been a generalized phenomenon. I commented on the difference between focusing on their USD value and their BTC value in this post from a few weeks ago: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1936239.msg20841065#msg20841065 In dollar terms they haven't done so badly, but have been correcting nonetheless, and STEEM hasn't been an exception. I think it will rise substantially once Alts in general begin to rally again. STEEM is one of those projects that people either love or hate, something that usually indicates a lot of future success for those who love it.  Grin  But don't take my word for it, do your research and draw your own conclusions, and, when in doubt, remember, you don't have to go all in!

Anyone have any doubts about where BitShares is headed?  Cool

Check out the rest of that thread. It's very good, and loaded with pertinent information. This is one of the most solid projects around IMO.

Also, @ProoLogic, all the BTC was raised with recent profit taking in other parts of the portfolio - all posted here in real time (as much as possible anyway).

It would be gerat if devs define terms what they need to bring transfers back to life, at least like some weeks(s) or month(s).
Not talking about precise ETA but some info/updates would be appreciated.
Understand what you mean. At this moment the first tests are looking good. But before bringing Magi 100% back its must be for sure that the fix is perfect. Magi learned from a fast fix and will not make that mistake again.
Magi dev is doing what he can and needs to have faith in the fix so it will not happen again.
It will not take months thats for sure!

Excellent.. thanks

And price is holding well on Bittrex, with decent volume too.
92  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EOS - Asynchronous Smart Contract Platform - (Dan Larimer of Bitshares/Steem) on: September 04, 2017, 05:50:34 PM

I am also always on the telegram group and  your questions are regurgitated daily.

All your points well taken except for the above. Why not here on the #1 crypto portal and point of first entry for many?

And I'm not even insinuating daily. How about just once?

Indirectly I guess you have. As Wekkel said a few posts above, it's about faith. Would you directly agree?

Edit: Oh, and the less than unimportant fact that Block.one will come away from this with a billion plus USD, for a wing and a prayer? Agreed?

1. someone was kind enough to set up this thread as a place for people to get info. Upto the team at blockone and EOS i guess

2. it is (partly) about faith. as with most ICOs and even, bitcoin itself. I mean, who thought back in '09 that bitcoin would take off? A lot of people dismissed it, even the smartest ones. And had a lot of questions that couldn't be answered. Yet, here we are

i dont think the ambiquity of the project is anyy different from most ICOs.

the problem people have is with the 1 year token sale and 1 billion tokens

3. to answer you last question

it cuts both ways.I believe EOS and blockone are confident of their product, hence why they are issuing 1 billion tokens at a *free market price*

if all off us decided not to buy, the price would go lower

if less people took part in the token sale daily auction , and less ETH was sent, then they would receive less money

remember, the tokens are priced at the end of the day's window after all ETH has been collected.

So if there's money coming in, means people are interested. Cant really blame the issuer.

Block one are conducting heavy marketing if you look around and  business development. So the money is not going down the drain

also, some of the money will be used to fund projects on EOS blockchain

a lot of people are equating " i dont understand" or "its blurry" to = scam. which is just an opinion

Thank you Afrikoin for your well thought out reasoning and explanations. I will be keeping an open mind (not buying yet, but hey, something's better than nothing) and following along, especially the release of EOS dawn 1.0 and the September UK visit rainbow169 mentioned. Hell, who knows? Like iluvbtc said, with Larimer's record, maybe it's worth a gambleGrin

Thanks all for helping me to get clear on the reality behind this project. Sometimes things looks so crazy, you've just got to ask for confirmation. Cheers!

NOBODY HAS EVER ANSWERED ANY ONE OF THESE (posted here in the order they were originally posted)
Several of your quotes were statements, not questions...

Token Purchase Agreement shows EOS Tokens are completely useless. Look:
https://eos.io/purchaseagreement/EOS%20Token%20Purchase%20Agreement%20-%20June%2022,%202017.pdf

- EOS TOKENS HAVE NO RIGHTS, USES OR ATTRIBUTES. The EOS Tokens do not have any rights, uses, purpose, attributes, functionalities or features, express or implied, including, without limitation, any uses, purpose, attributes, functionalities or features on the EOS Platform. - NOT A PURCHASE OF EOS PLATFORM TOKENS. EOS Tokens purchased under this Agreement are not tokens on the EOS Platform. Buyer acknowledges, understands and agrees that Buyer should not expect and there is no guarantee or representation made by Company that Buyer will receive any other product, service, rights, attributes, functionalities, features or assets of any kind whatsoever, including, without limitation, any cryptographic tokens or digital assets now or in the future whether through receipt, exchange, conversion, redemption or otherwise.

- PURCHASE OF EOS TOKENS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE AND PURCHASES CANNOT BE CANCELLED. BUYER MAY LOSE ALL AMOUNTS PAID.

- EOS TOKENS MAY HAVE NO VALUE.

- COMPANY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE OR CANCEL EOS TOKEN PURCHASE REQUESTS AT ANY TIME IN ITS SOLE DISCRETION.

CoinHoarder, the question/issue was implied, but by the class of this reply of yours I understand how that was lost on you.

You know what shooting yourself in the foot means, right?

A piece of advice: next time think about whether what you're saying/doing is helpful to your cause, or not (this is your thread, right?). Do you think this type of reply to serious issues actually helps the EOS image? (No answer necessary - this is for you to keep for yourself).

Saturday afternoon, relaxing with a good beer, and asking myself: why not just junk the POW?

AMEN brotha Smiley I've been askin myself that too

It's very simple, dudes.
There are few easy stages that will follow: 1) thousands past miners who want to sell Magi junked; 2) all exchanges junk the Magi due to low volume; 3) Magi junked at all.
Do you want this scenario for Magi?
I do not.
In my opinion, Magi is more about giving the smaller players a chance - if we go PoS only, it'll give proportionally more to the people who already have a lot (maybe they have to run a few extra wallets for this if there is a reduction in % based on balance), PoW under XMG is a great way for new people to get a foot in the door of crypto and try some mining. Yes, its being exploited now by a couple of big players - however if we can dampen that exploit a little I think we could attract a lot of fresh blood into the community which will be a driver for longer term value and enable more liquiduty on the markets.

I understand and appreciate what you're saying starmman, but is it really worth it? The ROI on mining? Is it the same that you'd get if you just took your money to the open market to buy? (And this is not to say anything about how exchange only acquisition would help to bolster exchange volume.)

As far as distribution goes, Magi is one of the most evenly distributed coins out there. https://chainz.cryptoid.info/xmg/#!rich

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not pushing anything here, just suggesting, and inviting healthy debate. What is the return on mining compared to just buying on the open market? Magi has risen an average of $.0010143 USD a day since January, or about 3 cents a month for each Magi. Is mining equally profitable? Considering that Magi will only have a total supply of 25 million, there's a lot more growth coming. I'm speaking from personal experience here, not with CPU, but with ASIC. I bought Baikal miners with 1/2 of my investment in January, and directly invested the other half. I've got more than a 80x on the direct buy, and less than a 20x on the miners - biggest mistake of my life.  Sad  And with CPU mining and its botnets, and other issues, man, I don't know, seems like a lose-lose to me, but I'll keep an open mind to what everyone here has to say.

Another matter that would have to be addressed would be the 18 million remaining coins still to be issued. That's a bit more difficult to deal with. A BTC airdrop? Take a snapshot and give one XMG for every BTC? That would be a huge publicity stunt ...

Just throwing this stuff out there for everyone to think about.

Cheers

Just bought 3000 more STEEM.

https://i.imgur.com/O1EuiNW.jpg

Hey, HR!
Appreciate your info

Steem lost about 95% of its ATH, so in terms of "buy low sell high" strategy that is a good pick. But what were the reasons steem dropped that hard at the first place?
Thanks!

STEEM had a huge run-up and now is caught in the middle of across the board panic profit taking. No change in the fundamentals behind it. This is a great buying opportunity!

Impressive! Very impressive result imo. What tools you using to make that chart HR? and do you have any telegram group with your trading group? I would like to follow your trading

No Telegram group. Everything's here out in the open. Grin

Basic Excel chart.

It's business dude. And good luck. I hope you can earn a really good sum of money from your strategy. I am also a trader and I trade almost daily. Everything seems great to me, but I can not capitalize my x100 yet. It is still very difficult, even if you have about $ 1000. Try to focus on Burstcoin. It seems very potential

Like you say, it's a business. Time will take care of all. Will take a look at Burst. One of three that's green on Polo right now.

BTC 23.46%
BTS 11.45%
SYS 10.90%
STEEM 9.23%
NLG 6.01%
PIVX 3.13%
XMG 0.42% (the only one of the bunch up yesterday)

It would be great if you also listed your USDT and SBD (if there is any?), to give the perspective of how much did you "took out".

Forgive me my bluntness - I'm somewhat flabbergasted.

Nobody ever came out to argue or disagree (is that lame, or is that lame), but you seem to have adopted a positive attitude about the dilemma you were presenting. So, you're good with the supposition that EOS only proves good if a "Facebook, or Microsoft, wanted to use EOS for *some* unimagined application"?
