821  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS & Braiins OS+ custom ASIC firmware: optimize performance & efficiency on: November 02, 2021, 09:32:19 PM
Because its not linear and sometimes more gives less, so you have to experiment values both up and down. I would advise your friend to focus in efficiency rather than speed, and yes, each hashboard is unique because the manufacturer throws a bunch of chips with different performance yield and let their (quick) auto tuning reach the advertised speed regardless of the chips actually being able to be more efficient which is what Braiins OS+ discovers after a far more exhaustive process.

Start with the default and try lowering values in 10, 20 or 50W steps. Don't bother going up unless you are doing immersion, its not worth it. The theoretical limit for the APW3++ before dropping its efficiency is 1496W. Its never good to run at the borderline, any little power fluctuation will make it go over it.

Remember, in the end better efficiency brings more profit than brute speed.

So a 1 speed 3300 watt miner.
I would have liked more then one speed setting.
These will be a hard sell item with coins under 9000  and the 1/2 ing right around the corner.

1 speed you said? Not anymore Smiley

823  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Venezuela Airport accepting Bitcoin on: October 17, 2021, 02:27:40 AM
If their Airport going to accept bitcoin I think they are late because there is a website already that offers flights that accept Bitcoin and other cryptos.
Unless if they are going to give less or more discounts when buying flight tickets on them.

Anyway travala.com is offering all flight destinations departing and returning and they are also offering flights from Venezuela so even they don't accept bitcoin travala is already accepting Bitcoin.

And travala doesn't have most of the (few) airlines that still operate here. Heck, most of the traditional major online "cheap ticket" web pages don't cover them either which is why for foreigners it looks like some sort of black hole. Its not, but the trick is you have to go to the airline homepage directly and skip those 3rd parties.

For example search Caracas <-> Port of Spain in those online services, very likely you will find either nothing or some horribly expensive with like 3 or more connections. In reality there are at least 3 airlines doing direct (1hr) flights, including the T&T flag airline Caribbean. I don't know how it is for other parts of the world, but those services "cheap flight tickets" websites are useless here.

A bunch of those airlines are State owned, such as those from Cuba, Iran and Turkey, add in Venezuela and its all fun with US sanctions, which could be a reason those online web services can't even touch them. Technically the EU also joined the sanctions so there is that.

Example travala says you need 1500 USD for the aforementioned example. In reality, you can do it with 100 USD to 400 USD. Same thing Caracas <-> Asunción, travala says 2500 USD but go straight to the same airline web page, and in reality its just 600 USD.

To pay directly to each airline you do it either at their own webpage, or at the airport. Is the gov doing pay processing? I don't know. I may try it soon, but its usually easier to simply exchange into fiat and do a bank wire transfer, at least for locals. But i can see this as a good alternative for foreigners who didn't bring enough cash for whatever reason (its too dangerous anyway, less cash is better).
824  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solar powered Bitcoin mining on the Earth Orbit or on the Moon Surface? on: October 17, 2021, 01:58:49 AM
Pretty sure we talked about this on this forum, probably the off topic area.

Bitcoin doesn't work for interplanetary purposes, the lag is too much and the blockchain would split. Unless newer communication technologies are discovered, such as with quantum entanglement, something like Earth to Mars won't work.

The moon may work, but i see little use. The dark side of the moon could be used but needs to be powered from the light side. There is a proposal for an astronomy facility powered from the poles, but I'm not sure if by then something like mining bitcoin would be worth it, LEO is far easier and cheaper but the Earth itself is good enough and has plenty of more renewable and currently wasted energy sources.
825  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: El Salvador mining bitcoin on: October 17, 2021, 01:42:21 AM

Anything that is profit worthy will steal those energy sources.  Imagine they really start mining like crazy.  Probably a long shot since they would probably just want to buy and hold bitcoin instead of mining the decreasing rewards.  I don't know I just never imagined a government itself would step into the mining realm.  They won't be the last one to do it to.

Its not the only government doing it but other countries have been more discreet. The news here is them being open about it.
And yes, they are buying and holding, but a little mining won't hurt either.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT9qQxxmfKk

833  Local / Hardware y Minería / Lanzamiento Braiins OS+ 21.09: nuevas características y beta para S19, T19 & S19 on: October 08, 2021, 11:34:01 PM
Lanzamiento Braiins OS+ 21.09: nuevas características y beta para S19, T19 & S19 Pro
Braiins | pool, firmware & protocol

834  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Braiins OS+ 21.09 release: new features and beta for S19, T19 & S19 Pro on: October 08, 2021, 11:08:09 PM
Braiins OS+ 21.09 release: new features and beta for S19, T19 & S19 Pro
Braiins | pool, firmware & protocol

  • Major release that overhauls the web interface, adds languages and features
  • Early access for beta testers of S19, T19 & S19 Pro - see the dedicated section below

New features for all models:
  • [feature] new web interface, with responsive design (mobile ready), dark mode and multi-languages support (ES, RU, FA, ZH)
  • [feature] firmware running from SD card now support upgrade and auto-upgrade (same as firmware running from internal NAND memory)

  • [x17 specific  feature] Improved Model Detection functionality, to cover situations where all 3 hashboards have invalid EEPROMs from a different model. Scenario: you have a second hand S17 and the previous owner has rewritten the hashboard EEPROMs with T17e profiles

Known Issues:
  • Kaspersky Antivirus may block the web GUI
  • [S9] Wrong DPS default minimum power limit value = 100 W
  • [x19] Sometimes invalid Power usage data
  • [x19] Inconsistency in data shown in GUI Dashboard
  • [x19] No chip temperature in GUI Dashboard

S19, T19 & S19 Pro - EARLY ACCESS
  • Access to early beta is possible only if you swap your x19 control board for an x17 control board. This is due to locked x19 control boards. Installation details can be found below. An alternative installation method will be available for the official public release.
  • This is an early beta to gather feedback. We appreciate any enthusiasts taking part to provide feedback via our Help Desk.
  • Not currently supported: S19i, S19j, S19j Pro, S19+ so signup for updates here!

Installation:

EARLY ACCESS Antminer S19, T19 & S19 Pro: to run the firmware on x19, replace the x19 control board with an x17 control board. Note that the C49 control board (used in S17/Pro and T17) has smaller dimensions and the cables might not be long enough to reach the hash boards of the x19. Continue with the standard x17 installation method (SD card method) or update the firmware to 21.09 if Braiins OS+ is already installed on the control board. The 21.09 firmware will detect whether it is being installed on an x19 (with x17 control board) model. You can always revert back to stock firmware for x17 on that control board. An alternative installation method will be available for the official public release.

For new installation from Stock firmware (x17 & S9): see documentation.

Automatic update:

if your current Braiins OS+ has auto-update enabled your device will be updated automatically.

Manual update:

  • You can also update using the web interface: flash the firmware by navigating to top-menu > System > Backup/Flash Firmware > Flash new firmware image >
S9 (click here to download)  or x17 (click here to download)
  • Update in single/batch mode using BOS Toolbox Install tab > type your device IP address (or IPlist.txt) in the Miner(s) field and type the device password and click Start button.

If the board sensors are bad, well... depends what the firmware does with it.

Quote

So chip temp 15 is a reason to declare TEMP_TOO_HIGH?
836  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: El Salvador to mine bitcoin using Volcanic energy on: October 05, 2021, 04:20:53 PM
They could have used volcanic energy to reduce its dependency on foreign fossils fuels, but instead they used it to mine Bitcoin.

Talk about wasted potential.

Talk about being ignorant. Who exactly is going to build the power plants, you?

By bringing foreign investors, they will build the plants to mine until it ceases to be profitable, then the country can have them...

Indeed you don't actually need volcanos, but those are a dead giveaway for geothermal sources. Japan has lots of them, and yet they went with Nuclear... This should have been started in the 60ies or something, they should all close those nuclear plants.

Japan has 3 times more geothermal power than Salvador.
The fact that it doesn't have more is because of the price and the size of the economy, you simply can't run the whole country on geothermal, for example, the entire potential of Salvador is at around 900 W, and this is the maximum capacity not economically feasible, by comparison, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear powerplant has had a capacity of 7,965, nearly 10! time more than the potential of Salvador!

900 what? And where did you even get that figure? Just how many plants do you think you can build to tap power from a volcano, 1?
Japan CAN literally go pure geothermal (or combine with solar, tidal, wind, etc), its just not even funny how much potential is wasted. Just because they produce little doesn't mean they can't produce more. There is a lot of dark incentives and politics involved, so don't get me started how they ended with so many nuclear plants, its a thing of the 60ies, when everyone was praising the power of the atom...
837  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Future on: October 05, 2021, 04:13:09 PM
Being engrossed in the present, I think a lot have failed and refused to envisaged, or envision the future such as viz ;

•Bitcoin replacing Banks.
•Robotics replacing Man-power.
•Uber replacing Taxi's.
•Amazon replacing Bookstores.
•AirBnB replacing Hotels.
I feel they simply don't like all of this and are intimidated by the future, do you think so likewise ?

You got it wrong, because those robots have replaced Uber. Tesla/Elon planning people to buy/loan cars and put them to work as driverless taxis to pay themselves when you are not using it.

With so many cars doing that, the incentive of owning a car plummets, which is ironic, but that is what will happen.

And of course the same happens to anything else, automation is reaching all corners of life, including aviation and ships.

Do you know the things a smartphone has replaced? The list is way too long. So stop using a smartphone and try to continue life without one, you are suddenly frozen, like Facebook connecting their security doors to the internet, as if that could ever fail (it did, yesterday)...

The less thing i think about Amazon is books, which is terribly ironic. Amazon is the American Alipay, some digital market place to buy whatever. I can imagine you copied that old list for somewhere, but its already obsolete.

Bitcoin is global money, it does far more than mere "replacing banks", it is replacing the State's "role" of issuing and controlling money.
838  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you want to see Bitcoin legal in your country? on: October 05, 2021, 03:59:22 PM
As long as the State doesn't get in the way its ok. Too much regulation isn't good either, then we get things like KYC/AML, next thing you know someone steals that data and sell it to crooks to find you...

The less State, the better. Some of the "gray area" countries are friendlier to Bitcoin than "legal" countries when they want to tax your "possessions" or what not.

"Revealing" to "prove" you are not a criminal, gives criminals the very information they need to commit a crime against you. Sometimes they are even part of that very State...

Not revealing your honest earnings doesn't mean you have "something to hide", but that you don't want to be "found" by the wrong people...

Its all fun and games until they kidnap you or worse. This could be an irreconcilable problem for people living in "nice" places they simply don't get.

Reminds me when we try to warn foreigners to not bring any Apple products or wear any jewelry. If you casually show you are in possession of an iPhone, its the same as painting a target to your body, you WILL get mugged (at gunpoint) or worse. Well same thing.
839  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 12 years today since the first known price was set for BTC on: October 05, 2021, 03:44:12 PM
Reading this, I really can't imagine that it would take thousands of bitcoins just to actually accumulate it into a dollar 12 years ago, 12 years later, 1 BTC is equals to $50k, the amount of profit someone will actually get if they invested in BTC 12 years ago.  15,100 bitcoins were only available back then to be bought and sold only for a dollar, if I only knew about crypto and Bitcoin back then, I would have invested in a lot knowing thousands of Bitcoin costed for only a dollar.

Let's be totally honest here.. no you wouldn't lol. Bitcoin is just an obvious investment right now just because it already rose in price innumerable times. People love to say "if only I knew about bitcoin early on.. etc etc" but in fact, 99% of us would just have ignored Bitcoin.

And there was people in /. claiming it was another scam or vapor, i remember well... I didn't look at it because the early wallets were for windows, and i hate windows, so i missed the switch to qt, etc. It doesn't matter anymore, lost opportunities are lost forever.
840  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Iranian Bitcoin Mining Ban Lifted after four Months on: October 03, 2021, 08:52:24 PM
It's good that the ban was lifted, but what does it mean that only licensed miners can come back to their activities? I mean, what are the tax implications, does the license cost anything and what other requirements they must go through? I think it's important to know the details because if the regulations are tough, it might be that mining is effectively out of reach, but only formally allowed to come back. Paying the electricity bills and some reasonable taxes is one thing, but obtaining a license, establishing headquarters and reporting regularly to the authorities would be very different.

That's exactly the way it is in Venezuela, and they made sure its very hard and expensive to obtain. This of course promotes corruption and many miners just try to hide. That happens when a country discriminates Bitcoin mining, rather than treat it like any other industrial activity, they feel they have to tax it way above the others. Which of course makes the place less attractive than other countries, so its only locals who have to deal with this nightmare and be under constant threat and surveillance from the State. It is common for corrupt authorities here to extort and even kidnap and ransom your people so you are forced pay them to keep "quiet" about your activities, and you can guess where that leads.

That also means that the naive attitude of certain pool operators refusing to upgrade from the clear text stratum protocol is unacceptable. But what do they care, its not like THEY risk their lives or anything...
