3.  the Regression Theorum is too restrictive as it could not have predicted something as innovative as Bitcoin.
Nick Szebo has a theory of money origins that has more explanatory power.
922  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: October 01, 2014, 02:18:39 PM
Not everyone has a lot of cash to buy bitcoins. Instead they have funds locked into tax shelters and a Bitcoin ETF might be a good option.
The truth is they already gave their money to Wall Street a long time ago and have little-to-no hope of ever seeing it again, whether or not they invest in a Bitcoin ETF.
923  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: October 01, 2014, 11:49:42 AM
there's no way any of the ETF's will allow settlement for retail investors with the underlying, be it gold or BTC.
This is why any retails who buy a Bitcoin ETF are fools.

All they'll accomplish is give Wall Street their money so somebody else can have bitcoins.
924  Economy / Speculation / Re: Theory: Exchanges are destroying the price of Bitcoin for personal profit on: October 01, 2014, 11:43:08 AM
I don't ever want to leave the house or talk to real live strangers.
Manipulated orderbooks and/or insolvent exchanges are the least of your problems.
925  Economy / Speculation / Re: Theory: Exchanges are destroying the price of Bitcoin for personal profit on: October 01, 2014, 02:20:42 AM
For me, watching this process is frustrating.  I first watched bots on Gox like Willie artificially raise the price, and now the market makers and bots are strangling the life out of Bitcoin.
Strategy 1:

1. Buy some coins on an exchange.
2. Withdraw those coins from the exchange immediately to a wallet you control.
3. Come back in a year.

Strategy 2:

1. Buy coins on an exchange.
2. Resell those coins on LocalBitcoins for a profit.
3. Send the money you get from 2 back to the exchange and goto 1.
4. Keep your profits in bitcoins, in a wallet under your own control.

If you think the exchanges are corrupt, then get as many coins as you can and hold them safely outside those exchanges' control.

If they are fractional on btc then they'll eventually get squeezed out of existence. Just make sure you get your coins out as soon as possible every time so you're not caught in the squeeze.

we're sorry Justus.  please don't get mad at us.

if you hurry, you still might snatch some.

...doesn't work that way. I send an CHF-denominated invoice on the last day of the month and get paid in btc based on the daily average exchange rate as of the invoice date.

Invoicing tomorrow...
928  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: September 30, 2014, 08:02:56 PM
ok guys, please don't eat through that wall at $390 until late tomorrow...

sorry Peter, we couldn't wait for you... Grin
This is bullshit. I wanted to buy more <$400 coins.
929  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 30, 2014, 02:19:04 PM
No, if Coinbase gets bought by a financial institution, the public will never use them again.
The degree to which they have been making their service less useful and more intrusive recently fits with the idea that they are being groomed for acquisition by a bank.

This is the correct function of the report button :

Indeed:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=20333.0

The policy to not remove anything worked when the forum was small. Now that we have thousands of posts a day, we can't afford 50% of them being junk. The moderators are now instructed to be less tolerant of low-value posts.

Some guidelines:

1. Free speech - you can say anything as long as it is relevant and presented in a calm and polite manner. Swearing, SHOUTING etc. make your post more likely to be removed.
2. No zero value posts or threads, like "SELL SELL SELL"
3. No pointless or uninteresting threads.
4. No referral code spam

5. No NSFW content
931  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Bitmessage - P2P Messaging system based partially on Bitcoin on: September 29, 2014, 04:59:56 PM
Working features:
   - Sending messages
   - Receiving messages
   - QR codes for addresses
   - Address Book
   - Import addresses
   - Export addresses
   - Choose which servers to use (including your own)

Roadmap for development (subject to change):
   - Update for Bitmessage Protocol Version 3
   - Lite client message retrieval using prefix filters (credit to Peter Todd for suggesting this)
   - Local encryption of the database, using SQLCipher
   - SSL for connections between clients and servers
   - POW implemented in C or C++ via the Android NDK
   - Support for broadcasts
   - Refresh the UI

Notes:

- Bitseal is not ready for widespread use yet. A full release is planned once lite client message retrieval is implemented. The app will be available on the Google Play store once this is done.

- Bitseal is free, open source software, released under the Gnu General Public License Version 3.

- Some parts of Bitseal include, are based on, or are reliant upon software written by others, including Jonathan Warren, Sebastian Schmidt, Tim Roes, Roberto Tyley, the bitcoinj developers, and the Bouncy Castle developers. This is noted in the source code where applicable.

- I have set up a few default servers which can be used for testing purposes. Anyone is free to set up and use their own. The server application is simply a slightly modified copy of PyBitmessage.

- The development of Bitseal has been a large project, taking many months of work. I'm doing it on a purely non-profit basis. Bitcoin donations are very gratefully received: 1L7amdWrPv4R4f1vLdanr2xU71TPs3wUEC
Great project. I have a few questions:

Does this app use its own address book, or does it integrate with the existing address book? Google contacts allow arbitrary fields to be attached to records. It should be possible to add Bitmessage addresses to existing contact this way.

Will Bitseal be able to run as a background service that other Android applications could call via an API?

Will the changes you made to PyBitmessage get merged upstream?
932  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 29, 2014, 04:07:37 PM
Point is, as long as centralized exchanges are the best option we have to get our hands on bitcoins, we will have to have a slightly more nuanced view on them, in my opinion: ideally, get your funds out of the exchange as soon as you can, but general heuristics apply as well (how trustworthy do the exchange owners appear? where is it registered? are there delayed withdrawals, fiat or btc?)
Did anyone lose significant amounts of bitcoins if they were just using the exchanges for purchasing and immediately withdrew the coins they bought?

I've never seen such a story.
933  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mircea Popescu Questioned by the U.S. on: September 29, 2014, 02:45:18 PM
I hope he hasn't been arrested.
His nick still chats in #bitcoin-assets.

Based on the conversations there it appears to me to be the same individual controlling that nick which always has controlled it, though that doesn't constitute proof of anything.
934  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 29, 2014, 02:24:07 PM
Users of this forum had no sympathy for those who suffered huge Gox loses (the general attitude was "we knew better, serves you right") and the idea that Gox may have impacted on the 'unwashed' does seem to have completely been forgotten by most here.
People who lost money on Gox had no sympathy for the people who tried to warn them for years that if they didn't hold the private keys they didn't actually have any bitcoins in spite of being attacked and ridiculed by the shills of whatever service was getting ready to scam their users next.

At some point maybe if the unwashed masses aren't willing to do their own research they don't deserve to hold bitcoins yet.

Look at this ad. Makes you proud enough to want to bomb everyone out of existence:

I can't wait for the day I can apply that label to myself.
Obtain a location-independent income derived from a non-US source.

Once your income and savings are in bitcoin, it hardly matters where you're located geographically.
936  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 28, 2014, 04:12:38 PM
How to benefit from Bitcoin exchange rate declines*:

1. Buy some more coins.
2. Remove them from the exchange and put them in your own wallet.
3. Goto 1

(*) Assuming you have a source of income independent from day tarding.

I guess we can be glad the trolls have at least come up with some new FUD instead of just repeating the same crap.

Save you some work:  No need for any updates Smiley
It's more important right now to work on making fractional BTC reserves on exchanges impossible.

After that's done, then we'll see about milestones.

Your 'milestones' thread
Hasn't been updated in a while because the data came from a hand-updated spreadsheet and I haven't gotten around to updating it.
940  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 28, 2014, 01:29:44 PM
This is provided exchanges do not practise fractional reserve.
If the coins aren't in a wallet under your exclusive control, then you don't actually have any...
