981  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Thoughts on the price of btsx ? aka Bitshares X on: August 30, 2014, 02:11:31 PM
I am also very surprised! I've Heard until now nothing of bitshares! Was there an ipo?

BTSX has a own bitcointalk thread? Cannot find it

BitShares from beginning has self forum https://bitsharestalk.org all discussion and things happened at this forum.
Usually community members just cross post important info here.
If you want be up to date about BitShares and another important crypto world info, join BitSharesTalk.

I don't unterstand why some Coins like bitshares move there discussions on their own forum! It is too cumbersome for me and certainly for many other's to register for any coin on their own forum! There are far too many

Because Bitcointalk is poison.

Well spotted...can prove anything with an appropriate quote !  Do you think it there's a chance it could have been sarcasm ?

No idea, and to clarify I do not seek to discredit rpietila or monero. It was simply a question.

My only constructive criticism is that this thread is looking unhealthy, it's looking very much to third parties as "trust me buy monero now, do it, buy it", people will be reading this and delegating responsibility for purchasing decisions to those trusted members in this thread, and wagering life savings or living costs on this currency.

It would be nice to see it change to discussion of technical merits, adoption, and usefulness, with any mention of perceived price-tag current or future limited to impartial observation.

Speaking only for myself, there are several members in this thread that I formerly had great respect for, of late they are conveying as shill's, whether intentional or not. I am sure non of you want that, as if anything goes south those people will lose credibility and to some respects be held publicly accountable whether fair or not.

I remember reading a reply recently from a former litecoin advocate, who simply felt awful because of how much time he'd spent encouraging people to buy, friends and associates had lost money and he felt bad. I hope none of you find yourselves in the same place.

On behalf of many other forum members, please just tone it down a little bit and be a bit fairer, less pressure, nobody needs to buy or sell - more presence from the developer(s) and those working on adoption or improvement would likely be far more beneficial to your goals than the current discussion.

Much of the discussion I believe you are looking for has been held in other Monero threads, at least one of which has been locked.  Some of the threads are linked on the first post of the ANN thread which itself has a wealth of info.

Most of the time this thread has pretty good discussion. It goes off the rails once and a while. But the topics are often interesting.

Unless there is already an IRC chat that I don't know about, anyone interested in chatting should hang out at #ora on freenode.

http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=ora

I like the philosophy behind Ora. And even though I'm not currently in it I like to follow it as I think there might be some mutually beneficial arrangements that can be made in the future between Ora and Bitmark. Totally different approaches, but similar values.

With coloured marks perhaps. Given out to individuals to use where they see fit. As a vote which can be delegated or cast by themselves.

Giving adoptions*(we should probably think of a better term for that, it's a little vague) the ability to create special sets of marks for use could be really powerful.

* For those who aren't aware, an adoption is an entity who has integrating marking in to their system(website ect.).

Yes Smiley - delegation will be important, I vote for whatever Mary votes for.

Ideally it would be a bit more thorough, consider a petition/task to 'Fix the Potholes on Hill Street', there could be say two more sections:

1. voted in experts to manage the project for a percentage of budget
2. local contractors with submitted budgets to do the work

Completely decentralized self managing local governance.

Yeah, it could have a lot of really interesting applications like that. Smiley

It will be fun to figure out all of these systems.

is this closed right? next wave is for 1 sept?

Anyone can already self enroll in the affiliate program and contests which are currently ongoing and details for affiliate announced in next few days.

Simply use your link from the Leaderboard->Referrals section of https://win88.me

you are neg trusted, if this is a scam, i'm not interested anymore

Lol, lots of people have withdrawn. It's not a scam. They are just busy with the site. It happens in every sign campaign when a new site launches. They underestimate the amount of work it takes to run a sig campaign. Which is why most of the time they get a trusted member to run it for them so they can concentrate on the real work.

Regardless of how he view bitcoin, he does get it right when he said bitcoin is a confident game.
So is the dollar, and every other currency in the world for that matter.

Actually, thinking about it, bitcoin is the only form of money with mathematically provable reason to have confidence in it. Every fiat currency is predicated on "it's complicated, you wouldn't understand. Just trust us."
There is no mathematical reason to trust bitcoin. The reason that bitcoin has value is because the market gives it value. If the market were to "decide" to value it at zero tomorrow then anything you would have invested in it would be gone.

WRONG
it costs miners about $500 to mine a bitcoin so they will refuse to sell below that. and people buying from the miners wil refuse to sell below the cost they paid. its called a resistance point and why right now the price even after a dump keeps settling back to $500+.. and why the price didnt drop below $450 in spring because the resistance point was $400ish back then. (even when mtgox dropped to $100 the rest of the community stayed above the resistance points)

the only time it would drop below the resistance point is when people are selling the coins they bought dirt cheap early on or they are dumb to sell at a loss. which doesnt last long before resetting/correcting itself.

the market has some psychology behind it and is not purely a magical number made from vapour.

alot of whales are trying to test the resolve of this weeks $500 resistance point.. and alot tested the resolve during the gox scandle. which both proved that the price has actual value.

so if you want to call the decembers $1200 speculation/vapour go ahead, as that high price was too high and had no backing. and even i call that the speculative high.. but basing bitcoins true value's of the LOWS, you do get to see where bitcoins true value lays

A market resistance point is not a mathematical reason to trust Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a complex system and you trust that it works as a whole, not just one part of it.

You don't pay, you can withdraw that 0.0005 right away.

The point was originally to stop some abuse that was going on independent of the sig campaign.

Fast forward a while, is this true democracy? Voted and paid for by the people.

I haven't been able to withdraw the funds that I've received from coin.princess on win88, it's been days.
I've messaged him/her and have not received a reply yet, but I see that he/she posted here Roll Eyes

How much is it? If it is over 0.02 try depositing 0.0005 in to your account and then withdraw it. It's the current policy. But they're probably going to change it at some point according to the admin on the site.
991  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 29, 2014, 02:34:53 PM
I market bought 2100 XMR for a client. I don't by any way mean it's much, but seriously I can only make one phone call per day, to one of my best investor friends, to avoid the price rising too quickly.

The total wealth reachable by my mailing list is 100s of millions. Last time I bothered them was when I told that "Bitcoin is something that you should buy now, even without research, even with small money, as long as it is now". 2013-2-6.

No offense - but why would you be pumping the coin like this?  You are creating wealth for random dudes on forums if you plan on "eventually calling in the 100s of millions of dollars of big guns" instead of creating wealth for your investment network.  Your speech and actions tell different stories.

As somebody pretty sold on Monero I just got a lot more concerned ...

Probably has something to do with the fact that he seems to actively day trade XMR to increase his total holding. More volume is good for him.

Also, he's beginning a project to offer XMR options so that also ties in with what I was saying above.

At the risk of leaving some sore toes in my wake, my academic self decided that I should continue documenting my experience in alt-coins.

Here's the Monero one:

This would explain the "Monero Botnet" that was quite the rave 100ish pages ago

What? I read that the devs of XMR use botnet to make fake demand for this coin. Is it true ?

This has nothing to do with people who mine XMR with botnets.

That's a gross oversimplification. There's no simple mathematically provable reason to have confidence in Bitcoin. A hash function is just a hash function. It doesn't have some inherent higher meaning. It's one cog in the complex system.

@dga: what has baffled me the most in your story is your disclaimer at the end: you're saying you're not holding any bitcoins. Really ?! anyway thanks for sharing:)

You would probably be surprised how many people there are who are interested in the technology but don't speculate on Bitcoin.

And then there are people who decide there is more money in investing or trading alts. Higher risk, higher reward.
995  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 28, 2014, 06:15:44 PM
Well Litecoin only holds its place because of brand.
This.

Litecoin offers exactly zero features over Bitcoin, so its chances of succeding have always been zero.

It has been created for people (kids or kid-like) who whined about not being able to mine Bitcoin anymore with their hardware. Not exactly a sound base to build something upon.
It's getting what it long deserved.

Well, it depends on how you define success. Litecoin succeeded in doing exactly what it set out to do: become an alternative to Bitcoin.

And to be fair 2 minute confirmations are a feature over Bitcoin. Regardless of whether it would take the same amount of time to make the probability of a double spend negligible. For virtually all transactions one confirmation is sufficient on any currency with a mature network.

The idea that there is a network ready to go with a different hashing algorithm than Bitcoin is a strong enough motivator to attract investment. There will always be a 'Litecoin' to go along with Bitcoin. Even if it's only 2-5% of Bitcoin's market cap. That spot is not a bad place to be, and I would never say that any currency with that amount of market cap wasn't a successful one.

The big question now is what currency will take that number two spot? Litecoin certainly won't hold it with the attitude of its community.

Also, considering it was actually in usage historically it's similar to using the dollar sign for anything that has the word "dollars" in it. Multiple currencies use the dollar sign, it's not restricted to single use. If they had designed the symbol themselves that would be different of course.

A fine point EsteNuno. We can also consider that we are using the symbol inline with it's time gained meaning too, to denominate 1/1000 of our currency, rather than completely re-purposing it mean a brand. We are just rather fortunate that when you look at the thing it expresses a 'mark' by containing a mark /  being a little m and meaning 1/1000.

Yes, it's amazing. All these little coincidences coming together like that.

New members are not eligible to participate. Right ?  Huh

No, generally newbies aren't allowed to participate in signature campaigns. Once you get to 30 activity next week(assuming you get to 30 posts) you might be able to find something as a Jr. Member. But even then it is difficult. 120 activity or 'Member' level is where you will be able to get in to most campaigns.

how long does it take for a deposit to be approved

anywhere from 2-5 blocks I have noticed.
I ask because I've been waiting like around 20 minutes or something

It used to be 6 confirms but I think they may have shorted it to 2 confirms. 20 minutes is completely standard and the average assuming the policy is currently 2 confirms.
998  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 28, 2014, 03:46:58 PM
Does anyone know someone who sold a large amount of silver at the top of the silver bubble and put that money in to Bitcoin?

The timing then was almost perfect. Anyone who got out of silver during Bitcoin's initial 2011 $30 bubble and got in any time before or after and held would have made the trade of a lifetime.

Another one would be selling silver in 2012 when it was still in the $30's and buying Litecoin for pennies.

So what's the asset that should be sold now to buy your crypto of choice(obviously XMR for most people here)? Or is there no current comparable trade. I probably wouldn't bother selling silver at this point.

Repurpose

* The mark (₥) is 1⁄1000 of a BTM

cross over maybe ..?

mazacoin has a similar concept with the checked M see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=725479.msg8436167#msg8436167

Perhaps, let's see if it is a problem as we progress, I see little incorporation of it within their project, it's not in the logo, and we do not know whether that project will mature or slowly die. Possibly some alt coins in addition to mazacoin have proposed or used it too.

My own sentiment is that it's not trademarked, or associated with anything to people's common knowledge, and the domain we will use it in is not really this forum. Put another way, if we looked at font-awesome or an icon pack and saw it listed associated with a company/tech/org then we'd have to abandon, if it's just in a line of text of an alt on a small forum I am not so concerned. Such things are claimed by association through usage, so let's use it and let it be associated with marking in people's minds, usage will claim this little ₥ for us if it is to be.

Also, considering it was actually in usage historically it's similar to using the dollar sign for anything that has the word "dollars" in it. Multiple currencies use the dollar sign, it's not restricted to single use. If they had designed the symbol themselves that would be different of course.

Is it theoretically possible to fork Bitcoin and implement ring signatures? Or is the current protocol something that fundamentally can't be adapted in that way?

Is it the type of thing that's 'possible', but so difficult that you would just be better off writing something from scratch al la CN?
