701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OFAC-Sanctioned Transactions Being Censored on: November 23, 2023, 08:12:17 PM
If there remains one mining pool that does not adhere to these legislation and can be managed in countries that have a political stance towards the United States, then all the other mining pools will be forced to build on top of that block
No, it doesn't. If censoring mining pools have 51% of the hashrate, then they can permanently exclude any transaction they wish. If a normal mining pool mines a block which includes a "blacklisted" transaction, then the censoring mining pools with a majority of the hashrate can simply ignore that block and re-org it out with 100% certainty.
Well, they can. OFAC compliant pools seem to control the vast majority of the hashrate right now*. If they want, they could fork the network and maintain the longest chain even now. But will they?

They're already losing out on fee revenue by excluding otherwise perfectly valid transactions from their blocks just because of OFAC. Hard forking by completely ignoring perfectly valid blocks just because they include transactions by BTC addresses in the OFAC list would likely create a very big debate.

Core developers would have to decide which chain to support, big services would have to announce their recognition to what they see as the main BTC etc. It would be wild to see. Miners stand to lose a lot of revenue.
I think big pools will just chose to filter transactions without forking. This status quo maintains their revenue and they can also claim non-participation in BTC "money laundering".

* Please read the source article more carefully and get confused like I was.
The only pool we can say with some certainty that is currently filtering BTC transactions is F2POOL. The others mentioned are false positives. F2POOL control maybe 12% of the network hashrate at the moment. Together with MARA pool which in 2021 had openly stated to be mining OFAC compliant blocks, although we're not sure if they still do, would make up around 16% in bitcoin's hashrate.
702  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to find new mineable coins at very early stage? on: November 23, 2023, 07:54:58 PM
When big teams create a new project they usually register social media accounts. So you can monitor for new subreddits/twitters etc. created.

For new subreddits, you can look here: https://www.reddit.com/subreddits/new

Not sure about new twitter accounts. Maybe you can monitor hashtags. This requires scrapping and potentially manual labor to filter out the results. But afaik it's now the most reliable method to find out about new altcoins.
Probably though, most new coins are not going to be mineable. Most newly released cryptos start out as tokens, or are designed from the start to be tokens forever, on blockchains like BSC that don't allow mining.

Back in the day the announcements board of this forum was all the rage. Now that the space has grown most cryptocurrency users aren't even aware of bitcointalk so crypto teams don't bother that much. But you can still lurk the altcoin announcements board in hopes of finding something.
703  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Is this the End for BC.GAME? on: November 23, 2023, 07:46:03 PM
Honestly, when a previously-active service in bitcointalk has so many scam accusations open against them and outright stop addressing these serious allegations, they tend to go dark not long after.

What's especially more worrying about BC.game is that they did actually respond to some of these allegations, in a way giving them credit by saying they will be addressed, but then went completely dark and never responded again or gave the users their funds back. It's one thing to be slow at addressing concerns, but to just ghost support cases is very worrying.
I'd never use such platform myself.
704  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Can Chat GTP destroy poker on-line gambling??? on: November 23, 2023, 07:40:43 PM
I think the more accessible AI becomes, the easier it'll be to exploit online game systems.
Think about it, when online chess was becoming popular, many users were using outside assistance to achieve the perfect moves.
This was not so easy to detect when online chess was making its first moves.
But years later its so easy to detect using counter-measures AI that users using assistance are banned in minutes.

With online poker though it might be a little harder. Not everything about the opponent's hand can be known, only some possibilities.
So counter measures might include intense proctoring and low-level monitoring such as anti-cheat software, live cameras etc. Who knows, serious online poker might become a surveillance nightmare for the user if the stakes are high.
705  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OFAC-Sanctioned Transactions Being Censored on: November 23, 2023, 07:10:29 PM
Also, how are they able to censor it? What is the technology that they are implying here that is calling them to do so? Until now I thought we were on a public ledger meaning anything that is sent or received can be seen on the chain if we know the BTC address. From where is the topic of censorship stated or was it included in the white paper already?  I would say I am still #weakintechnicals
Miners host their own full nodes and chose which transactions to include or exclude from the blocks they mine based on their own arbitrary criteria. This time around certain miners chose to exclude certain transactions because they're associated with addresses on the OFAC list.
706  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [LIST] Bitcoin mining pools that don't enforce transaction censorship on: November 23, 2023, 05:52:22 PM
I'll need to revise the OP tomorrow.
707  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OFAC-Sanctioned Transactions Being Censored on: November 23, 2023, 05:52:11 PM
I've gotta say, this is kinda worrying. Miners go against their interest in receiving fees from transactions by censoring certain transactions.
Maybe it was to be expected that a few pools would start doing this, but finding out that most of the big pools have started doing this around the same time? That's even more worrying.

I'm starting a thread to showcase which pools are NOT censoring transactions anymore. Feel free to drop by:

Bitcoin pools appear to have started censoring bitcoin transactions. I'm compiling a list of pools that don't censor transactions in this thread.

709  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance.com to re-enable EUR deposits/withdrawals on: November 23, 2023, 05:24:50 PM
So, as of today Paymonade in binance.com is disabled, the prompt to deposit EUR is still there, this time with Bifinity UAB...

Buuuut, if you try to actually deposit any amount, it will be returned to your account instantly. That's what happened to me at least. No need to try this yourself. Grin
710  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: They accumulate bitcoin but how about you? on: November 22, 2023, 05:59:55 PM
Governments generally don't accumulate BTC for investment purposes, they just auction them whenever possible after they acquire them. And many of the entities in the OP hold BTC only for custodial purposes. Grayscale's real BTC stash is much smaller, maybe to the tune of a few tens of thousands from fees accumulated from their GBTC instrument. But bear in mind that DGC who owns GBTC is also indebted through a bankruptcy case because they lost a lot of BTC that they lent out to irresponsible traders such as FTX's "Alameda Research" and Three arrows capital.

And Robin Hood holds BTC on behalf of people. They too charge fees but their real self-holdings aren't to the tune of 100k BTC.
711  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Israel is scary on: November 22, 2023, 05:52:51 PM
It's funny, Israel had a ministerial cabinet member basically admit that the state had nuclear weapons by saying they could always opt to nuke gaza out of existence with their nuclear arsenal, only for the country's Prime Minister to reprimand him, not for the sake of humanity, but because he made such a revelation.

It's sickening. I hope these people will be tried for crimes against humanity soon.
712  Economy / Economics / Re: How come both the "gas" and "fee" prices shoot up without ETH and BTC move? on: November 22, 2023, 05:41:23 PM
As you can see on this mempool site, https://mempool.space/, bitcoin unconfirmed transaction is 223426, which means the mempool is congested. Ordinals and Inscriptions is part of what that makes bitcoin mempool to be congested.

Ethereum network can also be congested with it transactions and its tokens transactions like ERC20 tokens most especially.
Yes I see that. I see that there's no move in price as well. More demand means more price isn't it?

Nope! The fees amount has no relationship with the price. The fees is not increasing because of Bitcoin's demand. It is increasing because ordinals have again become active and they are using Bitcoin network. So the network is becoming congested and the fees are increasing as per the normal process.

This nonsense called Ordinals need to be stopped immediately. Otherwise, Bitcoin network will also become similar to ETH.
The fees for bitcoin do have some natural correlation with price, that is at least if we assume that there's stable demand for space in bitcoin blocks.
So really it's a multi factor issue, but you can't deny correlation with price.

Go to the following website, what do you notice?
https://bitinfocharts.com/comparison/transactionfees-price-btc.html#alltime

Bitcoin fees peaked when prices were also reaching ATH levels. There's some very high correlation with the two well known BTCUSD bubbles of 2017 and 2021.

As of this year's peaks in fees, yes, you're right. They're directly caused by heightened demand for block space caused by Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens that take a lot of space in blocks with their really inefficient transactions, putting images and "token" creations on chain.
713  Economy / Exchanges / Re: $86m+ stolen from HECO bridge. ANOTHER Justin Sun service HACKED on: November 22, 2023, 05:32:07 PM
-snip-
What's going on here. Do you think this is suspicious from Justin Sun's part?
Definitely another warning to never keep funds in exchanges!

I read an article a few days ago and apparently, the identity of the Poloniex hacker has been verified, and the hacker must return the funds before the 27th of November (while keeping 10M $) otherwise Justin would seek help from law enforcement. So yeah, I doubt he's dumb enough to make such a statement if he's connected to the hack in any way, shape, or form. That could easily backfire.
So someone would be able to steal millions in crypto but not competent enough to cover their tracks?
I think this might be a bluff from Sun's part.

Yeah, it's likely that the hack could be attributed to incompetence instead of malice, but... So long as I don't see the hacker returning the funds I don't think they've really got his identity confirmed.
It was also reported that Justin sun used an ethereum block explorer to send messages to the addresses of attackers in multiple language.

Source: https://en.coin-turk.com/justin-suns-statement-on-poloniex-hack-funds-safe-and-hackers-identity-confirmed/

Sending a message in multiple languages seems contradictory to knowing someones real identity. Just one of the many contradictions here.
714  Economy / Economics / Re: No Correlation Between Academic Success and Financial Success on: November 22, 2023, 05:17:15 PM
if teachers  knew the secret to financial success..... they would not be teachers, they would be sunbathing on an exotic beach

in most cases academics are taught the basic principles and its for them to be motivated to look deeper and understand more and get involved more..

I've had professors of mine in university dodge referrals to lead corporations as CFOs or have careers in politics.
Was it because they hate money and business? No, they study and teach about these subjects every day.
But some people really prefer the study of something from an academic perspective other than being managers themselves. It's more of a political and ideological choice if anything.
Being an academic has its perks, but surely a lot of money isn't one of them. But you can't really do both impartially. For instance, a lot of technological progress is based on academic research released to the public for free and funded by taxpayer money. If all academics were sucked into corporate environments much of today's technology that we enjoy with free access would be closed source and behind paywalls, and that's if it was ever released publicly.

Really academics deserve more recognition in my view. Not everything is or should be about money.
715  Economy / Exchanges / Re: $86m+ stolen from HECO bridge. ANOTHER Justin Sun service HACKED on: November 22, 2023, 05:08:04 PM
HTX (known before as Huobi global) was said to have suspended deposit and withdrawal. I have no fund there and I do not bother to login into my HTX account. But it was said that all losses are going to be covered.

It was also not long when HTX was hacked. It is just of recent.

As for me, I can never use anything like Heco chain.
I wonder where the money to pay back for deposits is coming from. I'd sure as hell get my funds away from these platforms.
As of HECO, it's a blockchain based on Binance Smart Chain's principles, just for the Huobi (now HTX) exchange tokens.
It was very popular in 2021's bull run and remains popular with Chinese users, as does the exchange.

All these projects were running without major hacks before Justin Sun purchased HTX and Poloniex. Begs the question if it's oversight or malice at this point.
716  Economy / Exchanges / $86m+ stolen from HECO bridge. ANOTHER Justin Sun service HACKED on: November 22, 2023, 03:43:01 PM

Source: https://vxtwitter.com/PeckShieldAlert/status/1727286692489679360

It's crazy the frequency with which Justin Sun's owned services are getting hacked these days.

It was only a little more than a week ago that Sun's exchange Poloniex also got hacked.

What's going on here. Do you think this is suspicious from Justin Sun's part?
Definitely another warning to never keep funds in exchanges!
717  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Has anyone been able to make steady income with gambling ? on: November 22, 2023, 01:26:13 PM
Don't fool yourself thinking you can make an income from gambling. The chances are stacked against you.
Maybe you'll get lucky, but it's not going to last.

See there's this thing called house edge on gambling games. It ranges from sub 1% on blackjack all the way to the high teens on certain games. House edge simply means that the game is literally rigged against the player, although to a small degree. This is necessary to make games sustainable. Otherwise casinos would earn nothing and perhaps even go bankrupt hosting them.

So consider gambling and all luck-based games as a way to have fun and pass time. Nothing more.
718  Economy / Reputation / Re: Should Ratimov be in DT1? on: November 21, 2023, 11:15:37 PM
So Symmetric (ex. Ratimov) went to the full length of lodging a request with a site administrator just to change his username? AFAIK this is the only way it's possible to be done outside of being a VIP (50 BTC donation).
And it was granted just like that? Uhhh... Weird but ok.  Huh
719  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Greek 2023–24 Super League Predictions & Discussion on: November 21, 2023, 10:20:16 PM
Here I am posting about the new and upcoming matchday.  Grin

To be honest I don't see anything very interesting in these matches. I expect at least some interesting play in the Aris - Panathinaikos match as it's probably the biggest match up in this particular match day. But the rest of the matches are not between two big teams. So perhaps most people would consider them predictable, unless an upset is to take place. I'm eager to see if anyone has some predictions to make.

For now I'll only say that I'm rooting for my local team, OFI.

OFI had some good wins this season against bigger clubs and is higher in the standings but hasn't been performing that well lately. The odds aren't bad though, I'd take this bet.
Any other predictions before me? Grin
720  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽ UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany ⚽ - Qualifiers on: November 21, 2023, 09:47:52 PM
Wow Greece really surpassed expectations by leading France to a tie.
Both teams played well but it's surely a surprise for Greece to not lose to a so far unbeaten France.
Sadly this doesn't mean much for Greece, the country was bound to finish third in the group and therefore be lead to play-offs for a potential qualification.
Who knows, Greece showing some strength now would probably boost confidence in the playoffs. But it's not going to be particularly easy.
