1521  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin reach $ 19k again before 2022? (poll inside) on: December 17, 2019, 04:40:41 PM
I highly doubt it that BTC would go on such a bull run, but perhaps a small increase in price could be feasible. However, there's still quite a bit of resistance.

I believe there isn't sufficient support at the moment and there are quite a few market forces that would rush to take in profits if prices rose any higher. The levels reached not so long ago probably pose as heavy resistance given that many newcomers might have had that as their introduction to BTC and could currenty be in the red.
1522  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Stablecoin regulations and their future implications on: December 17, 2019, 04:36:42 PM
TBH, I'm sure regulation is going to show weaknesses of stablecoins. With no institutional clearing house to support large volumes, they'd collapse or at least would not be able to serve the number of people the do today. Regulators could bring any stablecoin to its knees if they so desired. If it's backed in FIAT, it's just as sizeable, no matter how tokenized.
1523  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 09-Dec-2019] on: December 17, 2019, 12:05:11 PM
Weekly Update (link)

Most of the changes this week are just moving the campaigns on PNYC and Active(Blackjack, Windice, Exolix) to CFNP. Also MintDice announced that in the next 2 weeks they'll stop the campaign.

I don't want to alarm anyone but you should pass your links through Virustotal, which appears to be positive for virus.

I will leave the link to the analysis below, but I encourage anyone interested to run their own analysis, the content is stored in archive.is and thewaybackmachine.

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/url/06c703cb5e4b62f36f5dc7d438082c285b4ce16776081268c5a6adf1a012bc62/detection

http://archive.is/edyMd

I'm 99% sure it's a false positive. 4/72 detections isn't much and paste.ee is a fairly popular ad free paste service. No one runs all of their links through Virustotal, that's not very practical nor accurate.
It must be a false positive. I know Paste.ee. It is one of the more reliable and also convenient alternatives to pastebin and I've been using it for years. Its owner isn't after profit, and the site even allows direct linking to raw text files uploaded (replace /p/ with /r/). Sadly some bad actors must have been abusing the service. Virus protection software tend to flank hosts along with actual malware websites and this must be one of such cases. Anyone could upload bad stuff to a paste site. That doesn't mean the site itself is bad, or that ralle14 would be a bad actor either for example.

Anyway, long story short, known website, IMHO it's safe.
1524  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Your thoughts about Greta Thunberg on: December 17, 2019, 08:08:38 AM
There are numerous things Trump did and are commendable in my own personal view, but his way of addressing Greta has been very undiplomatic for a head of state no matter how you look at it. I get that America has a lot to lose from slowing down its industry for environmental purposes and it makes good sense to stall more even if the entire world calls for measure to protect the planet. And maybe even Trump truly, deep down from the depths of his heart, honestly doesn't believe in climate change and global warming. But I think it'd be safe to say that calling a girl names isn't the way to go. And that's without any exaggeration. In my view, his stance would deserve to be scrutinized even more.

If his goal is dismissal at least remain silent IMO. It'd help save face.
1525  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If we support projects coming out of China, are we supporting the CPC? on: December 16, 2019, 06:47:54 PM
But if you are so concerned about donating money to China, maybe you should stop living? If you look at your home products at least 50% will be made in China. I have a lot of electronics at home, easily 10k USD worth of stuff made in China. I have a chinese-made smartphone, computer mouse, even clothes made in China. Let me check the keyboard... oh, it's made in Taiwan... wait, that's also China. My iiyama monitor, a japanese brand, of course made in China. I have a some Philips appliances. All have labels "designed in Holland, made in China". If I were to throw out every Chinese-made product in my house I'd probably be left with my Japanese watch, car made in the EU and some things from Korea.
It's one thing to utilize cheap production for everyday use products via international trade and another to invest in tokens... Guess which one is more tangible.
1526  Other / Meta / Re: To the attention of the Mods and Admins, account farms abusing bounty. on: December 16, 2019, 03:31:55 PM
Maybe multiple accounts isn't against the rules but to be honest, creating accounts automatically and attempting to pass their post as normal usage is very clear abuse. The forum should be very clear in auto banning and nuking such accounts if it's clear that they are automatically created.

And also, from the moment even one of the accounts created by the same person is banned, all others are considered to be evading the ban and are therefore breaking the rules.
1527  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If we support projects coming out of China, are we supporting the CPC? on: December 16, 2019, 03:26:15 PM
@franky1
Would you trust in the ability of projects whose development team is based in china to make independent decisions?

If we consider tech companies, the Chinese GOVT has been especially pushing for installing government officials directly into them. To my knowledge, this isn't the case to many countries other than China.
We have very clear indications that this is actually happening actually:
https://www.ft.com/content/055a1864-ddd3-11e9-b112-9624ec9edc59
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/23/china-to-place-government-officials-in-100-companies-including-alibaba.html

I'm wondering, if this is happening to some of the strongest private companies operating in china, could cryptocurrency projects keep themselves out of it? I doubt that they could. In my view, any crypto project based in China is in danger to lose its ability to make decisions independently, and being more prone to censorship whether this happens in an obvious or non obvious way.

We've seen huge and successful companies that operate out of China doing this to their user generated content. TikTok is a prime example: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/sep/25/revealed-how-tiktok-censors-videos-that-do-not-please-beijing
1528  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [Unofficial] CryptoTalk.Org & Yobit Panel BTCtalk Signature Campaign Discussion on: December 16, 2019, 11:21:30 AM
I do able to read up that Yobit timezone is +3 GMT so if we do base up on forums time then that would be 6PM estimated.
Some says that the post count will depend or vary on when the time you've joined the campaign.I dont know if its true.
Try to observe yet it do update every 3-4 hours as per say.
It was really difficult if it depended on the time that I participated in the campaign, I could not remember  Roll Eyes

Just to be safe I've adjusted my forum time to be at +5. You can go here and do it yourself: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;sa=theme

This way you'll know within what timeframe you have to make your posts so they count in the current day.

I work according to the forum's time zone, so I don't need to customize it to my time zone. The problem is the bot's time zone. It is completely different from the forum's time zone. I will continue to look at today.
You didn't understand me... If you set the forum's time to +5 hours it'll be in par with Yobit's signature campaign cutoff time. It's much easier if you see the time within the forum.
1529  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If we support projects coming out of China, are we supporting the CPC? on: December 16, 2019, 08:52:50 AM
im from britain and white.
(i say that because most racists think i must be one of the opposition if im defending such)

so im not chinese yet even i can see that most of these topics about china seem to sound too much like american writers who have just finished watching fox news and now want to rant some racist idea of why to hate another country they have never visited.

i love how people think that china is a dictatorship. and yet they have elections and even special economic and cultural zones where different rules apply.

i love how people think that china is america's enemy and yet america do alot of trade with them. most things you buy has some linkage to being sourced via china

i love how people think that america is the most popular country, yet it only has 25% of the population china has

i think sometimes people need to actually buy a plane ticket and travel to countries and truly experience them. rather than just believe the fox news hype
I've heard varying opinions on China's political system and I've also had many things told to me by my Chinese friends. Everyday life is not what concerns me in this topic though.

We also know from western businessmen as well as in many cases, local ones, how the CPC oppresses opportunities and how favoritism affects entry to the heavily controlled market. We know for a fact that for any foreign company to open up shop there, they would have to take in government agents to overview their activities. With that level of control, could cryptocurrency projects operating out of China escape the controls? Would those cryptos remain free and untamed, with their network remaining decentralized and immutable if the government suddenly changed its mind on crypto? It's a tough question. But if the answer is that those currencies could be used for anti-government activities at any point and in any way (as BTC could), then I con't see why the communist party would support them

1531  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "China's Gold-Backed Crypto Currency Will Blindside US Dollar" on: December 15, 2019, 10:12:06 AM
The zerohedge is a nice place to source ideological discussion, they raise some nice points. But other than that, I don't see much value in using them as a news source.

FIAT money brought to the western world positives that a gold backed currency could have never. Of course, there are the bad apples of bad central bank management but any tale of overtaking the US dollar now is an alternative reality.
1532  Other / Politics & Society / Re: No ifs, no buts, not maybe Brexit is happening by 31st January 2020. on: December 15, 2019, 10:05:26 AM
Nigel Farage agreed with the torries that he wouldn't use his brexit party to compete with tories if they promised brexit was not postponed again. He has a lot of bargaining power on this, see his numbers on EU elections. It's happening for real this time, and the deadline is 2020.

1533  Other / Meta / Re: Long string as profile personal text looks weird on: December 15, 2019, 10:00:56 AM
Am I the only one who doesn't think this is a problem? The user can easily add a space by himself to fix this (see this example).

I don't think I've ever seen a user with an Ethereum address in their personal text make valuable posts. Just 3 earned Merit on a total of 943 posts proves my point So I don't really see the point of adjusting the forum software for this.
Yes, it can be addressed by each user in their profile but that's not a solution. Also, if the char limit allows for such, I don's see why long strings shouldn't be in that text field. Spaces make addresses and links less useful.

Moreover, on your second point about valuable posts, I wouldn't consider the example I presented as a representative one for any reason. If from the forum's side all it takes is just a couple of lines of CSS, then I don't see why we shouldn't have a fix. It might not be a big deal or not widespread, but I'd take into account how easy it is to fix also, even if it's not super important.

Edit: spelling
1534  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Am I doing money laundering there? on: December 15, 2019, 09:08:59 AM
Assume you have $650,000 in Bitcoin.
You exchange $300,000 into fiat and this is your only
source of income. You keep $180,000 after paying California tax.

From the $350,000 you are left with, you purchased a
$150,000 car with bitcoins.
You did not convert money into fiat so there is no way the
government will know you spent another $150,000. You can
always claim a rich arab friend gifted the car.
Is this money laundering?

What if instead a car it was a house?
First of all, selling of BTC isn't usually taxed. It's the profits that are taxed as capital gains. You could do some accounting tricks to claim you acquired them with certain costs, even if it's cost of labor. Nobody would advise you to tax yourself at a virtual 100% profit, except maybe your local tax authorities. Gifts on the other hand, are very much taxed.
1535  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Your thoughts about Greta Thunberg on: December 14, 2019, 07:01:44 PM
I don't want to make it look like I'm caught up in the craze myself. There are aspects of climate change activism that I personally despise and believe that are very misled. For example I hate that people are calling for a ban on single use plastics, which would effectively make all grocery products more expensive. And I dislike how 'green' parties occupy seats in the EU parliament, overshadowing more important issues with their single cause parties.

Maybe Bitcoin Talk members are a bit more intelligent, and a lot less gullible than the general public. Of course climate changes, and nobody can deny that, it's the reasons for the change that are important. For example, consider the relationship between CO2 and temperature. A rise in CO2 levels tends to follow a rise in temperature, and not to precede it, and the time span is about 200 years. This is statistically true if you go back over a few thousand years. Then there is the cows farting rubbish. The truth here is that the first stomach of a ruminant is used to ferment the grass ,and the animals live off the products of this fermentation. This is converted into protein and other essentials that are an important part of the ecosystem. Feeding the cows with protein directly messes this up. We need more ruminants, not fewer as the new initiative seems to be demanding.

I'm thinking of using a new slogan - "Help fight climate change - eat a vegan today". Smiley

I'm really curious as where the sentiment for denying climate change with such passion stems from. If this forum's members are more intelligent, then why are people here acting like coal industry executives when faced with discussion related to the issue of climate change? What's to gain from sounding like a conspiracy theorist to most people? Not to say that appeal is all that matters, but conspiracies are part of the reason that the bitcoin community gets a bad wrap from the general public.

I feel like people not fond of climate change activists should meet others in the middle and try to be more productive than just deny everything. Presently, many faulty policies are being promoted to politics only because appeals to emotion sound better for most people. There are both faults but also positives in environmental policies. If we're to deal with the issue more productively I think engagement in this discussion should focus on the negatives and try to influence how public dialogue moves forward. Denialism on the other hand, sounds very unappealing to the general public.

We could be talking about how China is leapfrogging investing in renewable energy by instead building nuclear power production plants. Nuclear power also has zero emissions but the uneducated public's sentiment drives bad decisions around it. For example in Germany, electricity prices shot up within a year due to decommissioning of nuclear power plant.
Or we could talk about how banning single use plastics could act as inflation by making every single grocery item more expensive to end consumers overnight.
Maybe we could talk about how burning trash with new technologies is now more efficient and saves more energy than recycling certain kinds of them.
Or perhaps we could talk about how recycling materials costs more than burring them, and for certain materials also produces more emissions.
Or to talk about how "recycling" plants in some countries simply forward what they collect to Asian countries where the materials are likely dumped in open fields or rivers...

Instead of that, many people critical of how climate activism proceeds, instead spend their time attacking a teenage girl. Disregarding that by doing that, people at the other end of the horseshoe just get what they want and they become  even less likely to listen.
1536  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Are stablecoins a definite solution against a bear market? on: December 14, 2019, 01:50:58 PM
How would stablecoins be a solution against the bear market? Whales can still go on exchanges and dump, maybe this could be made even more easier with stablecoins as now DEXs can also take part in this process with higher volumes and even less KYC.

1538  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Your thoughts about Greta Thunberg on: December 14, 2019, 01:42:56 PM
Everyone knows that there is cyclic climate change on timescales that are orders of magnitude greater than the one we are talking about right now.  It doesn't really matter what things were like that long ago.  What matters most is whats happening, how it will affect us humans living today, and what we are going to do about it.

Bringing up the reliability of historic data is a red herring.  It would be like, in the midst of the plague, bringing up the fact that people have always died from infections.

Poll Finds Most People Would Rather Be Annihilated By Giant Tidal Wave Than Continue To Be Lectured By Climate Change Activists

https://babylonbee.com/news/poll-finds-most-people-would-rather-be-annihilated-by-giant-tidal-wave-than-continue-to-be-lectured-by-climate-change-activists
I honestly can't understand why there seems to be an abnormally large percentage of climate change deniers in this forum, especially when compared to the average population. What is it that makes bitcoin enthusiasts scream and shout when they hear about climate change?
1539  Other / Meta / Re: Long string as profile personal text looks weird on: December 14, 2019, 01:34:12 PM
Not only personal text, but also the long texts in profile page expands to width of profile page. I don't say it's weird but somewhat non-standard. I suggest to have a fix width of profile page for all ranks or same width for each rank as what the forum already has rules for characters in signature.
That is true and the CSS line of word-break: break-all; can actually also address that. In my image ago I tried to target only the personal text but caught them also and the results can be seen. I think it'd be ideal if all text was forced to wrap under a certain max width instead of it affecting the unset width...
1540  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Why Crypto Exchanges Should Lower Their Fees and Profit Margins on: December 14, 2019, 01:27:02 AM
I think that the profit margin might already be quite low for a new exchange. The need for employees grows while profits might never do. Many new small exchanges rely on listing bitcoins to earn profits but this is only a task with diminishing returns as the volumes dry up very soon. Many crypto exchanges in fact close down within their first year of operation... It's easier to open an exchange now with the white label solutions, but to make it innovative and capture insterest is still hard.
