201  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Revitalizing the Local boards on: September 06, 2018, 07:12:45 AM
I certainly think so. My local board (Indonesian) is certainly getting better as more members are now volunteering to help the mods fight for spams, which is a chronic problem in my boards. There are more interesting discussions compared to the past. I personally wanted to apply for a merit source even though we already have 2 sources. The more the merrier.
Thanks, that sounds encouraging. I think these local boards should get more attention as a lot of people will look there first.

This goes for the whole forum.
-Summer : people post less
-ICOs failing, scam bounty campaigns... people stop joining sig campaigns and in result don't see a point in posting as much
-Too much spam : people know that if they ask a question, they'll get one good answer for 20 shitty ones. Don't know if that's the case in your board though.
-Not enough merits being distributed, and probably not fairly enough : people have given up on ranking up.
-It's been like this even before the summer started, even in winter.
-We don't really have too much activity, that's the issue here. So, no spam either.
-Yes, there are 0 merits distributed. It's sad if good posting users are leaving because of merits...

Do you have a mod in the Romanian Board ? If you do, maybe he should apply as a merit source.

P.S : our mod is also our merit source...and he is only a "member'' so I don't think a high rank is needed to apply.
Yes, we have Cyrus but I'm not sure if he's a merit source or not, I don't really see him posting either.

I think mods do not fall in the same category as regular users, so they can be merit sources disregarding of rank.
202  Other / Serious discussion / Revitalizing the Local boards on: September 05, 2018, 11:00:22 AM
I have noticed that for a few months the interest in the local sub forums has died down (at least for the Romanian local board which I'm aware of) and I wonder why?

I remember when I first heard about this forum, about 2-3 years ago, the first stop I made (although my English skills are decent) was in the local Romanian forum. It seemed like a good place to start for me, to see if my co-nationals have solutions on how to move money in & out of crypto exchanges, how to do that, which are the best exchanges to use with our local currency etc.

I recently saw some posts in Meta: Locked and contented to the given response of Mr. paxmao & Merit source application (French local board) where a lot of people were saying that the Spanish & French local boards were starting to pick up traction with the appointment of new merit sources & stronger moderation.

I know I'm not senior enough to apply for a merit source position but was wondering if any Romanians are lurking here that may apply for something like that. I also tried pinging some legendary members to encourage them to apply, but did not get any response.

What do you think? Would this trigger more activity in the local boards?
203  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bittrex demanded Bitcoin Gold pay $265K or face removal on: September 04, 2018, 11:05:18 AM
I'm curios why they kept Bitcoin Gold listed until now, they should have removed it immediately as the news got out.

As a user of exchanges, I would like to be protected from trading currencies that have been hijacked or are facing the risk to be hijacked.
204  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: A Scottish firm is using the blockchain to tackle the spread of fake news on: September 04, 2018, 11:00:13 AM
[...]
Blockchain should not be included in any project just because it is the buzzword. Especially if you want to use a decentralized blockchain.
Yes, I agree. I think people are starting to use various terms like blockchain, decentralized etc. just because they sound good and attract readers.

I didn't find any info to how they are going to use the blockchain, I'm curios if OP can shed some light on this.
205  Other / Meta / Re: Merit source application (French local board) on: September 04, 2018, 08:54:46 AM
I see a lot of people quoting looong threads when they apply to be a merit source.

A post doesn't need to be long to be valuable, some posts are just long and re-iterating the same things posted on this forum for years or just summarizing obvious things.

I would challenge all merit applicants to find 5 posts that are 2 lines long and are merit worthy.

--------------------

Going back to your application, it's good that people want to step up and help make a local forum more active by distributing more merit, but I would still want to see a more established user being assigned as merit source.
You may think you already know a lot but the thing is you simply don't.

A more established user, in my opinion, would be at least Sr. Member.
206  Economy / Reputation / Re: Farming/Connected Account on: September 04, 2018, 08:40:00 AM
Please move your thread in the reputation forum: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=129.0
This board is intended for forum software discussions, not people doing illegal stuff on the forum.

Going back to your question:
[...]
as we can see this user send all altcoins to this one address 0x2159d6ab53588fc4a8cc9e8eac33764038343f40
[...]
If all of them sent the payments to one address that's enough proof to link these accounts together.

Although, I have looked at there addresses and I don't see the addresses sending $$ to the main one. Are you sure you posted the correct address?
207  Other / Meta / Re: 6 sendable merit left [regular merit boost feature needed] on: September 04, 2018, 08:05:27 AM
Hi there

I two or three days I won't have any merit left. I am not asking for more merit here.

But i think that after some time users should get a new bunch of merit that can be sent. They dont have to count for the ranking up or dont have to be displayed.

Because I will miss a forum feature very soon.
OP, that's the whole idea of the merit system.

After some time, all the initial merit users received would have been depleted and only the merit sources would get more merit to distribute among the members which deserve them.
You will also get sMerit if you receive merit from someone else. For example, if you get 10 merits from somebody, you'll have 5 sMerits to send to other users.

I agree it has become increasingly hard to receive merit (users doing good quality posts do not receive merit anymore - Has the Merit faucet dried up? Solutions? ), if this is where you're trying to go with your question, but you're an established member and may apply to be a merit source.

Take a look at this:
[...]
You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.
[...]

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.
208  Other / Meta / Re: How can we stimulate Bitcoin Talk? on: September 03, 2018, 08:58:53 PM
Isn't that exactly what we're doing? Numerous ideas have been suggested to help clean up the forum but we now just need theymos to implement them. Removing signatures from lower ranks, requiring merit to become a Junior and punishing badly run signature campaigns seem to be the most popular and easiest to implement and would have a drastic effect on both the spam and culture here.
I think drastic measures are needed in order to stop the spam that is infesting this forum.

Like I said in an earlier post on a different thread, you need to tackle the root cause and not the effect. So, campaign managers need to be investigated if they paid spammers or not.

I don't disagree with the idea to have merit in place in order to reach Jr. Member rank but please keep in mind that there are a lot of accounts of any rank already (including Legendary), that are spamming this forum and getting paid for it.

Well there's not much you can do to enforce this. I wouldn't really be against people having to hire someone trusted or experienced to run campaigns, but then that becomes an issue of who gets to be trusted especially if you never allow new people. Existing campaign managers would then have a monopoly over running them. How do you decide who gets to run them or not as well? Rank? People could then just buy an account. Zapo is a new campaign manager and he's a rarity in that he actually does what he's supposed to and doesn't accept shitposters and those without merit. Should he not be able to run campaigns because he hasn't had any previous experience even though he's doing a better job than some of the current 'experienced' managers here? What happens if you're a new company but have a trusted member of staff who is prepared to run them efficiently but they would still be a newbie here? Should we be forcing them to hire someone just because they don't have a high rank or activity? I would rather just let people run campaigns, but if they clearly don't know what they're doing then they should be warned and then face punishments if appropriate. That to me seems the most sensible way to tackle it, but the problem is the issue isn't being tackled at all right now and anyone can run a campaign as bad as they want with absolutely no repercussions at all and that's something that needs to change.
Yes, you are right, there are members like Zapo who is running the IOU campaign like a PRO and it wouldn't be fair to restrict users from being able to be campaign managers but if there is no time from mods to check the activity of campaign managers, I would be OK with a limited list of campaign managers approved by administration. I think the grater good aka "no spam" would be more beneficial to the members here.

Anyways, the bigger problem is not really the people managing the campaigns from the Bitcoin Services section but the bounty campaigns you see in the altcoin boards...
If you take a look at their sig campaign requirements it's plain ridiculous. Not to mention they are paying members in "stakes" and after 3 months the payment might not even happen at all, essentially spamming the forum for free...  Sad
209  Other / Meta / Re: Possible Merit Source Abusing his Power Merit System on: September 03, 2018, 08:18:00 PM
First off, I'm not sure what is this post doing in the Meta sub-forum?
We discuss forum software related things here. If it's scam/abuse it must go in scam accusations sub forum.

Second, theymos has said that you can top-up any user that deserves to rank up, with no restrictions.

Last, MERIT is NOT MODERATED. You can complain about it forever, there are more important things the staff will look into. Try investing your time in something productive.

Seems like this MeritTalk will never end...
210  Other / Meta / Re: New feature implementation @theymos on: September 03, 2018, 11:54:27 AM
There's this: Forum feature request: set Alt-text by default for all embedded images [SOLVED]
Theymos also stopped bump bots from being able to delete their own post within 24 hours on boards with the most spam.
...
Thanks for the insight. I had lost hope after seeing so many features that were not implemented.

There's a few things that have happened that people have mentioned already like the homographs and the 24 hour bump deletion thing, but don't forget about the merit system as well.
I'm not sure if the merit system was a user proposed feature, I haven't found any info leading to that.

Anyways, it's good to see that a few features were implemented, although I was expecting a lot more. Hope is not lost, yet Smiley

Theymos is probably reluctant to spend too much time coding things for this forum when he's busy working on the new one
 ....
If I remember correctly, I read somewhere here that this was started sometime in 2015. It's 2018 now, I think it's highly unlikely that this will be done anytime soon, if ever.
Judging by the current pace & developers involved, it will probably take a lot more time that originally estimated.

I'm hoping that something will be done about removing signatures from Newbies/Juniors or requiring the latter to achieve some merit to become one. Clamping down on ICO campaigns who do little to nothing other than pay for spam would also go a long way and these are things that wouldn't require much effort from theymos and the staff can take care of the rest.
I think this part with the restrictions to signature display is definitely not working.

I remember when I was a Jr. Member and the ability to add hyperlinks in signatures was removed but you could still display a text (like it's still the case now). As you can see there are a lot of campaign managers who hire Jr. Members to advertise their ICO/project/etc. So, clearly this isn't working.

The best way to stop this would be to randomly check the activity of campaign managers and see if they paid people who spammed the forum. Or if this looks cumbersome, create an official list of "approved by administration" campaign managers that people promoting their services could hire and any other bounty/signature threads created by someone who is not on this list would be deleted by moderators.

Otherwise, you will still be fighting the effect and not the root cause.
211  Other / Meta / Re: How can we stimulate Bitcoin Talk? on: September 03, 2018, 08:58:49 AM
...
I've gotten used to it. I love this forum, I am here almost every day and after a hard day of work, it relaxes me to bash a bit of spammers first and then read a bit about my favorite coins.
Yeah, it's the same for me too. This place is great to be in the loop with what's going on with the coins you follow or want to buy/sell.

I remember a lot of people talking about investment opportunities and coins that are expected to go to the moon and why, but nowadays it seems like people are more concerned about making money though signature campaigns (and everything related to that like MeritTalk) and getting that $10/week rather than seeing the big picture, where the real money is at.

I'm not saying signature campaigns are bad but I think it should be regarded as indirect earnings in the sense that "If I'm still going to post, I may also get some free $$ in return." and not something you're posting for. I personally see it like this.

It's sad that this is where the forum is at right now.
212  Other / Meta / Re: New feature implementation @theymos on: September 03, 2018, 08:40:33 AM
If this counts, he fixed the problem with the hompgraphs which I suggested months ago.
I had to push a lot to get it done but the final result is important Smiley
Yeah, I know about that one.
I see it more like a way of fixing a bug to prevent others from plagiarizing and not really a new feature.

It's sad we're spending a lot of time talking about these features and nothing gets done in the end...
213  Other / Meta / Re: Where can we discuss altcoin news? on: September 03, 2018, 08:35:42 AM
There are some altcoin news that are good to discuss in the forum, like the news about Ethereum's postponement of the difficulty bomb and the decision to reduce the mining rewards to 2 ETH.

But the altcoin subforum is full of thread bumpers and makes it hard to discuss real news, and the press subforum deletes news that are not about bitcoin.

In any case, can the moderators of press be less strict and allow the more appropriate altcoin news?
I'm glad people have not forgotten the purpose of this forum. I feel like it was buried a while ago in the MeritTalk   Sad

I am also lurking around these forums as you can find a lot of good posts through the hundreds of spam posts but sadly, like you said, they get buried extremely fast if not instantly.

I think adding a new sub-forum called Altcoin News/Press would be a good idea. It will be similar to the Bitcoin Press sub-forum.

Although, I have seen this proposal multiple times in the past and nothing came out of it... If only someone would see it now...   Roll Eyes

Why not put it on Serious Discussion?
Putting it here would be weird. Since we have an altcoin board, we should use it.
214  Other / Meta / Re: How can we stimulate Bitcoin Talk? on: September 03, 2018, 08:25:42 AM
I think BCT is moving away from the purpose it was created for.  Sad

I see the focus has moved to discussing merit, forum features that won't ever get implemented, etc. rather than talking about bitcoin or the next big thing: altcoins.
I see the altcoins section as the new "wild west" where almost anything is possible but sadly a lot of people don't see them like this and they are missing out.

I think a good way to jump start BCT is to focus on bitcoin/altcoin related sections. Maybe try to weed out the spam which is killing the forum and focus less on other trivial issues..
215  Other / Meta / Re: I've just awarded this guy with 3 merits on: September 03, 2018, 08:15:03 AM
Leaving aside the fact that he plagiarized in some posts, there are a lot of good posters that go unnoticed here.

I know a lot of you are saying the Altcoin, Bitcoin & Economics sections are full of spam but if you take a closer look, there are a lot of interesting discussions where good posters try to help people with real issues.
That's the real purpose of a community after all, helping people and improving the knowledge of everyone.

Everything what you see in the supporting forums like Meta, Scam Accusations, Serious discussions etc. are mostly off-topic considering the name of this forum is BITCOIN talk.
216  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: For staking: Do you use one wallet per coin or a multicoin wallet eg MyEtherWall on: August 31, 2018, 02:14:12 PM
I think it depends on the person.

Some are paranoid and want to keep every coin in their original wallet and some prefer multi-coin wallets. The safety mainly depends on the user, a lot of wallets are hacked because the passwords are weak or because the user didn't see he went to a phishing website by mistake or didn't follow the recommendations of the wallet.
217  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: This is temorary spike on: August 31, 2018, 02:05:37 PM
The truth is nobody can tell you for sure if this is the spike that will bring coins to new all-time-highs or it's just a small spike.

I think there were at least a dozen people like you back in Nov 2017 saying the same thing. On the other hand, I bet there were a lot of people who saying you should buy in January.

One thing is clear, nothing is certain in this field.
218  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Which is your favorite cryptocurrency related website besides BitcoinTalk? on: August 31, 2018, 01:57:58 PM
If you're talking about news related websites, I can name a few that stand out from the rest:

If you were looking for other forums, similar with BitcoinTalk, I can't mention any  Grin
219  Economy / Economics / Re: What made the Warren Buffet to be the most successful investor on this planet? on: August 31, 2018, 10:40:30 AM
Yes saving is important thing to make happy life, but he had some special skills? which is not present with other millionaires is that he won't show off much which is considerable thing for an investors?!
I read that he just lived his life in the old house which he bout it for $31500 at his early life but he never go to big house even after he own lots of money.
Yes, limiting your spending aka not "showing off" is very important. A lot of the money some millionaires spend is just to show off, not because they actually need those goods/services.

Regarding where Warren Buffet is living, that's a bit off. He has always lived in Omaha, in the city where his first factory was located, but he owns a large home that he purchased in the 1960s.
Here's an image of it: https://www.forbes.com/pictures/mmk45fgld/warren-buffett-house-omaha-nebraska/#74b13dae277e

The rest of the properties he owns are "vacation homes".
220  Economy / Economics / Re: Central Bank of Crypto-Currency on: August 31, 2018, 10:34:08 AM
This is ridiculous... The whole point of crypto currencies is to have everything decentralized.

Whoever came up with this bright idea has a lot to learn about crypto currency and why it was designed in the first place.
