801  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [CryptoNight] CPU mining guide & coins that will get you a return on: March 19, 2018, 04:10:04 PM

I hope that most of the new coins will be ignored by the ASICS crowd as they'd be able to fuck it all up in seconds. On the bright side, most of the cryptonote devs I've seen who've posted are fairly anti ASICS.

Indeed, they are anti-ASIC, that's why I chose this algorithm for CPU mining in the first place Smiley
At the time I created this thread, CryptoNight coins were not minable with ASICs (or at least it wasn't known yet that it's possible) and now that someone has found a way to do it, the majority will hard fork to maintain the ASIC resistance.  Cool

To keep everything back on topic, what coins are you mining with your CPU? Smiley

I think you'll have better luck with this in the Altcoin Marketplace: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=161.0
803  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What should I be mining? on: March 18, 2018, 07:05:52 PM
Do you think that I jumped in at the wrong time and lost alot of money? Cause at this rate it's gonna be over 3 Years to get what I spent to just break ever?

At this time the coins are undervalued and the numbers aren't great. You can expect this behaviour from time to time, usually this bounces back in a week or two.

If it's a bad investment I can't really say what the future holds but you can't expect to get a ROI as in previous years. Let's face it, no other traditional business will give you a ROI like crypto has.

If you take a look at the GPU market right now everything is overvalued but still, there is a big market for video cards. Worst case you can sell them and get your money back.

804  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What should I be mining? on: March 18, 2018, 06:23:45 PM
The best way to find out what you need to mine to turn a profit is by going to: https://whattomine.com/

You can select the number of video cards you have there, set in your electricity costs and click "Calculate".

It will tell you which coin & algorithm is the most profitable for your setup.
805  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: I'm glad I didn't buy any more video cards, a 1080ti barley makes $1 a day on: March 18, 2018, 05:39:32 PM
It's always been like this. If you take a look at the price chart of a coin for the last few months, the market fluctuates every few months and of course 2018 is not 2017. To me, 2018 is more like 2015.

The good thing that will come out of this is a cooling of the GPU market that was overheating for the last 8-12 months.

If you do a bit or market research, the same GPU that you bought some time last year was almost 30-40% cheaper than the same GPU you will buy today although newer models have entered the market in the mean time.
This has never made sense when it comes to IT&C products, the normal trend has always been for them to be cheaper because of the new technology being rolled in.

Mining has artificially inflated prices but a correction on the GPU market was also expected for a while now.
806  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [CryptoNight] CPU mining guide & coins that will get you a return on: March 18, 2018, 09:58:03 AM

Yes I understand that, but what I was saying is to avoid having all minners on the same pool. By the way this pool get down and here is what happened:
Quote
Luckypool is back online now however this has raised an important issue we currently have. We have gone 45 minutes without a block as the majority of the hashing power was in luckypool so that when it went down, the network didn't have enough power to find a block until one of the other underpowered pools finds a block and the difficulty can adjust. The more we spread the power among the pools, the better it is for our network Smiley

Here's the full list of pools:
- https://haven.miner.rocks/

Thank you!

Ok, I see what you mean now. It's a good point. Thanks for sharing!

I recommend the use of pay pools. They are more powerful and there are no scammers. But now you need to start looking for other algorithms. If you do get X3 Antminer on the cryptonight mining algorithm using GPU will be forgotten. The first deliveries are scheduled for mid-may. You don't have much time left. May be better to look for other options?

I doubt they will start mining the coins I have listed here with ASICs and it seems the coin developers have started to hard fork in order to introduce ASIC resistance.

Like I said in other threads, I doubt the small trade volume coins with survive the ASICs.

I'm re-applying for Round 3 Smiley
I'm not interested in the cash prize, if I will win please allocate it for the next round Smiley

I also experienced this weird behaviour today.

I started the day with 197 posts, posted 3 times but now I have 196 posts  Huh

Are the posts still being recounted?

809  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Las Vegas Strippers Accept Bitcoin via QR Tattoos on: March 17, 2018, 09:07:28 AM

My comment when I saw this is that they should really have the QR code point to a redirectable URL.  If their address was compromised for some reason, it'd be a pain in the ass (perhaps literally) to have it changed.

Enjoy,
Ben

They use temporary tattoos, it's not a real tattoo Cheesy

Now when will we see a bunch of strippers chained together, and calling themselves the blockchain.

Dude! This cracked me up  Grin  Grin

Since BCT is the largest community of BTC holders, how many of you US guys spent your BTC on them?  Grin

Yes, it's an interesting idea, not to mention the paradoxes that could arise from this.

Have you guys seen the videos with this guy "Noah" who pretends to have come from the future?

I consider it to be a hoax but let's day dream for a while... What if this could be true?

BTW, he says BitCoin will still be around in the future  Cheesy
811  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 17, 2018, 08:39:13 AM
After giving it a little bit of consideration I've decided to increase the amount of merit I'll hand out to 2nd place (at least for this round). It looks weird that 3rd place gets more merit than 2nd, even if there is a cash prize. I will give 3-Merit for 2nd place, instead of 1. I'll do my best to earn some more merit so that I can make it consistently a solid amount of merit; no promises, but maybe someday down the line I'll be able to become a source. One can only hope, but for now 3 is the best I can do and there is no promises for future rounds besides the original pledge of 1-merit.

Yes, indeed the merit amount for 2nd place looked a bit off to me too.

It would be nice if you guys with the review services could be merit sources, it would be definitely easier to distribute them to quality & helpful posts.
812  Other / Meta / Re: request: encryption subforum on: March 16, 2018, 06:41:15 PM

Probably not enough traffic for a dedicated  forum.   Just post it in "Serious Discussion".  Smiley

Actually Ivory Tower might be even better. The moderation should be stricter, and the posting requirements are higher. For some reason, Ivory Tower gets ignored by most members, but I think it has tremendous potential.

Guys, this whole forum talks about crypto-currencies and encryption is a big part of any currency be it bitcoin or altcoin.

I still think a sub-forum would be interesting to have - maybe we can learn new stuff there.

813  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Are there any altcoins you can mine with a mobile? on: March 16, 2018, 06:07:07 PM
I tried mining for CryptoNight coins on a high end smartphone using an octacore CPU, 8GB ram and powerful mobile GPU but got a max of 40h/s... very low. Not to mention that the phone would get really hot and the power would drain fast.

In the end you'll ruin your phone battery and need to replace it. The cost to replace the battery would be far more than you can mine with it.

No. Sell it and buy the coin you expect to increase in value.

Best advice you got today. I suggest following it.
814  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Java -Browser -Mining JSEcoin, For ppl with low/no hardware etc! on: March 16, 2018, 05:39:39 PM
I think this doesn't belong here... This forum is about BitCoin mining not AltCoin mining.

Although, I have seen a few of these posts pop up in the altcoin boards already as well:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2170371.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2176947.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2676555.msg27329294#msg27329294

Are you guys hoping to get more referrals this way?
815  Other / Meta / Re: request: encryption subforum on: March 16, 2018, 05:09:07 PM
I think this is a good idea.

In my opinion, having some specialized discussions in a sub-forum is always best rather than posting them in a more general discussion where the thread will be buried almost instantly.

Maybe a suitable candidate would be a child board on the "Development & Technical Discussion" forum? Where would you put it?
816  Other / Meta / Re: 17 Merits to give to Quality Posters on: March 16, 2018, 04:56:32 PM
I appreciate your initiative!
I believe I'm doing some good posts but most importantly I try to help the forum community as well as I can.

Please feel free to browse through my posts and if you consider I deserve any merits send them my way Smiley

One of the threads I try to keep up to date:

817  Other / Meta / Re: Another way to get merit on: March 16, 2018, 04:35:34 PM
Hey,

look under my name.

If you donate me exactly 111 merit, I'll have:

Activity: 1111
Merit: 1111
Posts: 1111

... and it will be really cool. Cheesy

EDIT:
Oh damn. Now it's ruined. I replied to someone in this thread and the whole thing won't work anymore. :/

--
It was a joke anyway.

Good to see people having some fun on the merit matter rather than just complaining about it  Cheesy

My turn so, I currently have:
Posts:   189
Activity:   98
Merit:   29

I think I can make 9 more posts today and I'll have 198 posts, 98 activity but definitely can't make 69 (wow... magic number  Wink ) more merits today to achieve a total of 98 merits Grin

818  Other / Meta / Re: Report Sufficiently Answered Topic(s) to Lock on: March 16, 2018, 02:18:30 PM
Yes, I totally agree. There's so much redundancy in some areas that it's simply alarming.

I don't think mods really have the time for it since they're already dealing with a lot of stuff.

I just replied on another related thread that maybe a solution to this would be to automatically lock threads after X pages (but still leave an un-lock button for the OP to use in case he needs to) because clearly the OP doesn't really care about it after he gets his replies.
819  Other / Meta / Re: Over-replied topics on: March 16, 2018, 02:03:48 PM

There are even threads that have more than thousands of replies and if you will scan through it most are redundant and generic replies. However, it seems that there's nothing to be done because there are even other threads that are almost the same as other thread but just rephrased.

This was mainly due to spammers that wanted to rank up fast or rank their alts fast. Hopefully the merit system would solve one part of this issue.

The next part of the issue if that people generally don't lock their thread after their question is answered or they got enough replies to form an opinion. I assume some of them aren't aware of the "LOCK" button on the bottom of the screen.

Another thing is that everybody feels an urge to comment on things (I think this is human nature) even if their contribution isn't really going to change something or add something to the discussion, they just need to feel heard.

Maybe a solution would be to automatically lock threads (e.g. after page X fills up) but still leave an option to the OP to re-open if needed.
820  Other / Meta / Re: Two suggestions regarding Merit on: March 16, 2018, 01:49:22 PM
1. The process of sending merit seems a bit annoying. You've to go through another web-page and select number of merit to be sent and then send it. IMO, it'd be better if it could be sent just by clicking "+Merit" button right within the thread.

2. It'd be much better if you guys allow only one merit by the merit-sender per post. This will reduce fake-merit-exchange or fake-merit-giving. There're people sending tens of their merits to a single post which clearly seems like something fishy.

I agree with #1, we need an easier way to send merit. Preferably on the same page and without any third party scripts.

I think that #2 is not really good since a post may deserve more merits than the other and the abusers would still be able to go around it by sending it to multiple posts.

The current system seems to work for me, and it avoids making merit awards accidentally,

I agree that the max award should be reduced. I suggested a max of 2 per post per member.

A max of two merits per post would still be a bit drastic.

I would propose using 5 as a max. I remember a lot of websites used to have the "5 star" rating of something in place at some point (and I think many still have it). So, this way you could send 1 merit if the post is decent and 5 merits if the posts is excellent.
