821  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Cryptonight / Cryptonote - On GPUs and ASICs and profitability on: March 16, 2018, 01:19:27 PM
Nice research! Merited! Smiley

It would be nice if you could maintain this thread for a while and let everybody know which coin will be forked to be ASIC resistant.

My opinion is that whatever coins will not be ASIC resistant will fail and it's not worth investing in them.
822  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Attention: Bitmain is currently performing a large scam on: March 16, 2018, 01:15:47 PM
Yes, you are spot on!
People who preorder them now will just fund their mining operation until Monero forks.

Any other CryptoNight coin that will be mined with ASICs will fail because they do not have a sufficient market cap to support the influx of new coins on the market.

If this happens, I predict:
  • first phase: acute devaluation of the coin (as you know the majority of CN coins have low prices & have a max supply of billions) until it will be worthless
  • second phase: interest for the coins will fade
  • third phase: the coin project will be sunk

I hope this isn't going to happen but all the signs lead to it.  Sad

There are a few posts around here that can get you started fast.

I have one related to CPU mining but this can be easily applied to GPU mining as well. Check out these posts:

825  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [CryptoNight] CPU mining guide & coins that will get you a return on: March 16, 2018, 10:56:14 AM
I've used xhv.luckypool.io at first because it was where all minners were, but now that there are more minners on http://cryptoknight.cc I've switched to it and it has 0% fee. For now it seems I'm getting more XHV per day on this one. But at the end it should be equivalent. It's more to have at least 2 large pool than a big one.

I usually don't recommend joining 0% fee pools because they either have bad uptime or they steal your good shares.

When it comes to the effort used to mine a block by the pool, I have been lucky in the past on smaller pools and mined blocks with 20-40% effort and got the rewards fast but once you get a few 200% effort blocks (which will happen sooner than you think) all that advantage will be lost.

827  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [CryptoNight] CPU mining guide & coins that will get you a return on: March 15, 2018, 01:02:28 PM
Great.

But you should mention another pool like http://cryptoknight.cc/haven/ with 0% fee. xhv.luckypool.io is a good one too but the majority of minners are on it which is not a good thing for crypto.

I've selected that pool because it's more popular and it has more miners on it. I have tried multiple pools in the past but it seems that you get more consistent results when you join large pools. Not to mention the importance of the pool having a high uptime.

From what I've seen until now, mining on a pool that has a lot of members is not a bad thing at all, especially when resolving a block takes more than 100% effort.
Another good point is that blocks are found very fast - about 4 min on luckpool.io rather than 4h on cryptoknight.cc
Of course, the block reward will be split between more users but I think it's a good compromise because there will be more blocks.

What was your experience with pools?
828  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Monero ASIC next from Baikal (was: Bitmain)? on: March 15, 2018, 08:35:24 AM
I'm thinking about the sudden hashrate increase in XMR, trying to explain it. It's 5 fold increase in a couple of months.

Is it that every GPU migrated from ETH to XMR? I think this is not likely, seeing ETH hashrate. And GPU supply is limited at the moment. There are not enough GPU in production to justify a 5-fold increase in such a small timeframe. Everybody and their parents started mining on the home rig ? Might be, but still, I don't buy it.

What is somebody is using asics. Perhaps preliminary or private development. Think about the D3 and what it is going to do to X11.

And if this is true, who could this be ? My coins would go with Bitmain.

I know, Cryptonote is supposed to be memory intensive and thus not asic friendly. But, 2MB is not that much and asics with such memory exist. The only risk for such an asic would be the hard forks of monero. They could increase the memory size, or maybe not. Many CPU had 2MB of cache and exceeding that would make CPUs unfit for mining.

So, my guess is that we're going to see an ASIC for Cryptonote really soon. What do you think?

Your prediction was spot on! Smiley

So, this answers some of the questions in a different thread:
Q: How long do the ASIC creators use them in secret before making them available to the public?
A: It seems they were using the Giant N and the Antminer X3 from July 2017. So, about 9 months!

Q: What kind of profits do they make before they make them available to the public?
A: Taking into account that Monero would be their best target coin, that means they could pull about $200-300/day or $80k until now with the X3 and about $20-30/day or $8k until now with the Giant N. These numbers are for just 1 device! Imagine what kind of money do they make with dozens of them.

They will also max out these profits by selling these ASICs to naive miners that will probably just pay them off until the hard forks happen and then have nothing to do with them. The creators win all the time.
829  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmain Antminer X3 -- 220KH+ Cryponight - 550W on: March 15, 2018, 08:17:07 AM
It's interesting how some news of hard forking coins to prevent ASICs from mining brings out all of the secret ASICs on the market.

You must be a fool to buy an ASIC right now, they milked all the coins while they could and now they're trying to make a profit by reselling them too.

I wonder how log they have been using them before putting them on the market? What kind of profits did they pull from mining?

Another interesting coin is http://havenprotocol.com
Worth to mine (~0.4/150H/Day) and compare to some others Cryptonight coin it will provide a real useful feature: Offshore Holding

Ok, this one seems promising from what I can see. Added it to the first post in this thread. Smiley

There is an unofficial discord for SPOTmeCoin here : https://discord.gg/nCsxdMf

The low diff makes this a great coin for CPU mining.

Do you have any other info on it? Are you mining it now? What pools are you using?

Although this coins was launched at the beginning of January it has not gained enough traction & attention from users on BCT. I would be a bit cautious to mine it at this time, it may be a waste of time.

836  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Joe's Signatureless Challenge: Win $25 ($10 for 2nd) + 8 Merits every week! on: March 14, 2018, 11:01:14 AM

Yes, as it does not belong to a paid signature campaign. Thank you for the merit; it's much appreciated. What would you like to do with the cash reward if you place for this round? Keep it in escrow? Roll it over to the next round? Donate it to charity? Please let me know!

I don't think I will win, but if I do, let's roll it over to the next round.
Maybe we can encourage more people to start posting quality content and most importantly help the community. Thanks!
837  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New to mining need an Advice on: March 13, 2018, 05:44:34 PM
Hello as I said I'm a bit newbie in terms of mining. I want to try out GPU mining if its possible and got some few questions and hope that someone can help.

1. First is, is still profitable to mine using just 1 card? My plan is to try one gtx 1080ti or 1070ti (just ignore the electricity consumption factor).

2. Will it be possible to plug it on my workstation and be able to do my daily tasks on my PC and be able to mine. (What I mean is just using my onboard graphics and letting the GPU to mine.)

Yes, you can do that but the profit will not be very big. Taking into account that your workstation will use electricity for your other components, I would recommend having as many GPUs as you can fit in your workstation and of course, what your power supply can sustain.

To get an idea on what you can make with certain GPUs you can check out this website: https://whattomine.com/
Also, please keep in mind that if you have a decent processor you can also mine using it and set the priority of the CPU mining process as "low priority" to not interfere with your usage of your workstation.

Also, to see your overall workstation power consumption you can check out this website: http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/
838  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: Raise merit requirements at the lower and highest ranks (@theymos) on: March 13, 2018, 04:36:34 PM
Having spent far too much time reading about merits lately I've noticed a tendency towards suggesting changes that would benefit the person suggesting them rather than benefit the forum overall. Now I'm going to have to try very hard not to argue against change for self interest. If the merit system hadn't been introduced I would automatically have become a Hero tomorrow, but that doesn't bother me at all. Whether anyone believes me or not, I really don't care what my rank is.

The reason I disagree is that I believe the intention of the system is to block the spammers from ranking up and not to cause an obstacle to anyone using the forum as intended. The average of 1 merit a day requirement to keep within the existing activity based schedule seems well chosen to achieve that goal. Now that the initial distribution of sMerit has dried up it has become impossible for shitposters to ever achieve Hero or above (Sr. is probably also beyond their grasp). Anyone who is here for the right reasons should easily outstrip the 1/day requirement and not be affected by it at all.

Your suggestion is rather to change the ranking system to mark out exceptional posters (like yourself). Now that is not a bad objective per se, but not what Merit was meant to be the solution to. It is actually very easy to spot the exceptional posters simply by looking at the actual number of merit they have been awarded. I know this has already been suggested elsewhere but I'd go along with the introduction of a new beyond Legendary rank. That would indeed mark out the exceptional members and also give the existing Legendaries something to aim for.

I totally agree, everyone including OP is following their own interests and not solving the forum's issues like spam, shit posting etc.

The majority of people here use this forum to gain knowledge about the crypto world and make money from either trading or mining or why not, both. Once you get to Full Member or Sr. Member status and you can use all the features of this forum like adding an avatar, linking the signature etc. you should be all set and you shouldn't care about gaining merit or activity anymore.

What everyone should be actively concerned with is helping the community with whatever they can. It's always nice to have someone to ask advice from so, why not help out others when you can? Sadly, I have seen a lot of shit posting rather than help...

Hello,

I was just reading this thread... and I was wondering if what you're saying is true? Can someone really get 1 merit per day easily? It seems like a rather difficult goal.

I've perviewed many threads on here and rarely do I see the green italics above a post denoting someone was merited.

Don't believe a word about it... Merit is hard to get if you're a person who doesn't have a lot of time to invests in creating posts. Even if you help out people (which is the purpose of a community) you won't necessarily get merits because usually people asking questions don't have merits to send or don't know how to use them.

OP may be a good poster with a loooot of free time on his hands but he is also a notorious merit "hunter".
If you do not hunt for merit you won't get it as easy as it is advertised by some people.

What the fuck is with these fucking people...  Dude its a fucking web forum.  The rank achieved here is nothing to be proud of...

Holy shit people get a fucking life that isn't tied to this fucking forum...  Go outside take a walk enjoy nature, get a fucking blowy (from a real person not some 15 yr old boy pretending to be a 19 yr old women on the webz), smoke a dube, have a glass of wine.

When you start saying things like"blah blah blah insult to the word hero" and "can you really call someone legendary".  Hey dude it's a forum, guess what those ranks actually mean, NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LOLOLOLOLOLOL

A persons trust, merit, and rank are completely inconsequential because interwebz and also have zero bearing on the content of their posts.

Yes, you are spot on! Keep in mind that this forum is also very popular between teenagers (and that's perfectly fine) since they have a lot of time on their hands and for some, no social life.

But the truth is people are focusing more on ranks rather than acquiring knowledge about the crypto world and then making money from it.
The sad truth is everyone is trying to rank up to join signature campaigns and make money from it...
839  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Baikal Giant N - Cryptonight, Cryptonight-lite ASIC miner on: March 13, 2018, 03:23:42 PM
It seems like every active cryptonight coin will follow the hard fork Monero will do to counteract this new ASIC.

I think this will also sort out all the coins that will make it in the future because having ASICs for new coins is always a bad idea (disregarding the algorithm).

In my opinion the coin needs to be well established and with a decent trade volume created by real investors before ASICs can be introduced to help the soon to be congested network.

All in all, I would suggest not investing into this ASIC unless you can manage to get a profit quickly and then get out fast.
840  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Are you mining for profit today or the future? on: March 13, 2018, 02:33:36 PM
My opinion is that it also depends on the power of your mining rig.

If you have a large rig that will require a lot of electricity & maintenance costs then maybe the best approach would be to mine profitable & established coins and then sell them (but still keep a few in case the price skyrockets).
The reason why I would chose established coins is that you have a lower risk of them going bust (or devaluating fast) before you sell.

If you have a low range mining rig I would mine and hold in case the price jumps, thus speculating on the price. Of course, you need to do your own research on the coins you select to mine, otherwise you will end up with nothing.
