Edit - I have no idea if it works or not but I type in my password and then hit five random keys (anywhere in the middle) followed by hitting the backspace five times).  Even if it is placebo, I have always thought that was a way I could defeat any potential keyloggers.  Note - I am not the most tech savvy individual in the world.

This would not foil any potential keylogging attempts of stealing your password to your wallet. A keylogger can see all the keys that you press so if they attempt to decrypt your wallet with your password, they can simply delete the last 5 letters and then would have access to your wallet. A keylogger would not even know that you entered them in the middle of your password so it would not affect it.

Also blockchain.info allows the 2nd password that is optional and will allow you to send funds can be entered via a "screen" keyboard which prevents most keyloggers from capturing your password

Thank you for the post.  I can appreciate my bubble being burst as it does help.  Not sarcasm at all.

I pretty much don't touch that computer outside of work and three websites.  I'm on a different computer for this forum and other BTC related activity...

So take for example I wanted to buy something for 10k USD I have to put 20k Down? No way... No way not happening.

Pretty sure if you polled the community as a whole they would not go for this either.

Yea, pretty absurd...  Will limit the market to people selling DOGE tshirts.   Cheesy

Yes sir, think its a fatal flaw.

Flaw?  Do you know how fast those things sell?  Merchandise movement is merchandise movement...Wink

I don't think that smart contracts are going to be limited to DD though.  I could be wrong but I would think that they would be negotiable between seller/buyer.

from the ANN :

"Available for use immediately upon ICO completion:

- Windows QT wallet (Certified)
- Mac QT wallet (Certified)
- Block Explorer
- Android / iPhone wallets will release within just a few days of testing on the blockchain after initial coin distribution."

where is android/ios wallet Huh?
it should be already here since ....

I don't know why they claimed that it would be released so soon.  I had forgotten about that because I wanted an android wallet to mess around with.  Of course, if the main wallet is releasing tomorrow then it makes little sense to release mobile wallets without those features.

is the new wallet and smart contracts coming out tomorrow?? I just read that on twitter. Is it the case?

That is what the BitBay team has stated.  So yes.

The reference to Friday is at the bottom of the post.

Wow... I should take my money off of online wallets. I really like using the blockchain.info app on my phone, but it's not worth the security risk.
I definetly don't want to run a full blown bitcoin client like bitcoin-qt...

I wouldn't think of using anything but Bitcoin-QT.  It is intensive but once the blockchain is downloaded there is minimal effect on my computer experience if I leave it open.  I'm not even terribly confident that it is secure and I have a pass code that takes minutes to input (random phrases from Ulysses).

I finally broke down and installed a phone wallet but only for the novelty.  There is never more than fifty bucks in it.

These stories kind of scare me.  I don't have nearly the amount that OP had but I don't want to lose anything that I have.  2FA on an email account might seem like an inconvenience but is necessary in my opinion.

I feel for you, OP.  I hope that there is a way to bet your BTC back...

426  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk mobile app!should we have it ? on: December 04, 2014, 08:19:06 AM
Is there no option to disable it? Seems you should take it up with the dev, and tell him we don't allow signature content outside the signature area, which is going to cause issues with his userbase.

Now that you mention it, I think I found the 'advertised from' checkbox.  If that is indeed the case, and I need another post to verify since the search option is disabled and I can't access this thread without a bump, then the app became a bit cooler.  It wasn't an obvious selection though when considering signature content.  Perhaps I am slow...

If an official app is forthcoming, I would love that. Aside from some basic issues(search is basic and necessary, in my opinion, when trying to find threads already responded to; and a few other annoyances) this app keeps me informed when I am away from from my computer...

So please tell me there is another app coming!!

Edit - Tested on another thread and the disable works (Will delete them in the morning because they aren't contextual to the thread).  Egg on my face.  That said, the app does crash often and search is disabled.  So it's cool but could use improvement.
427  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk mobile app!should we have it ? on: December 04, 2014, 07:07:20 AM
I actually use the app on a regular basis.  My BTCtalk information is not the same as anything else I use so the risk is minimal.

I would rather an official app though.  I got busted by a mod for posting from the app because it leaves a signature advertisement.  I didn't know it was not okay so I now use it as 'read only'.

It also crashes a lot.  I think that there is likely a security risk but I don't haphazardly use my smartphone.  Nor is my phone or information on it associated in any way with my wallets.  So yeah, cool resource, wish there was an official app and be careful using it if you decide to.

And don't post from it!  Mods will delete if they see it.  I felt bad when it happened...

No offence but you are saying you are happy with no information. Yes we have the tech and wallet but we know NOTHING about the real work of populating a marketplace of some sort. That's simply unacceptable. The list I saw had only a couple of the people under NDA's so what about the others? Seems fishy...

I said I was currently satisfied.  I don't expect there to be no new information forever.

The team said that they would release more specific information when the NDA's are expired and stated that the marketplace would already be going by then.  I am okay with waiting for the marketplace to exist before we tackle the other stuff.

I understand that might place me in a huge minority of crypto users and trust can be a risky thing.  But so far I see positive interaction with the community which looks like it will continue.  Let's see what the website is like.  A dedicated forum will hopefully start spawning some productive discussion regarding project specifics.
429  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BitBay |Decentralized Marketplace|Smart Contracts|IoT Tech|Markets Open on: December 03, 2014, 07:32:50 PM
Can this project please prove the Chinese connections are not just bluff?

I'm reading this is a scam that is just David resurrecting blackcoin. Time for proof, and lists of names isn't enough.

Non disclosure agreements prevent the release of more specific information regarding the team involved with the marketplace.

That might not be enough for you right now and that is understandable.  I am satisfied currently with the information provided and think that Friday will be a good day for determining the seriousness of this project.

That's a lot of BTC ahead of the auction...

what mean the link of twitter?

That's about 82 million worth of bitcoin...unless it was photoshopped, which I doubt...

just wish it would start pushing the price up now to make us all feel better about this investment.

It's not a short term investment nor was it intended to be.

I actually expect to be holding for at least a year if not longer.  It's going to take time for the marketplace to be running smoothly (at launch, we should expect a few hiccups though I am hoping that they will be minimal), for people to learn about and experiment with smart contracts (tis why a wizard is not a bad idea and I hope it is implemented in this weeks release) and for the team to do what they do (which I am hoping is what they are implying that they are going to do).

To be honest, save for general discussion once things get moving, especially around the time hedging first starts, there is no need to communicate with us.  I'm not saying that I desire that but I am not sweating what has transpired.  Not in the least.  I understood the flow of events to a reasonable degree when I bought during the crowd sale and am prepared to lose all of it (I didn't say that was plan A...more like plan Z^2).

Patience is key here.  The guys who show up demanding answers to the same question because they know it can't/won't be answered at this stage in time are of no interest to me.  They may help drive the price down and cause some mild short term volatility but the fact remains that there are a lot of coins that are not on the market...and that's because they are waiting for the roadmap 1 to be completed as stated (End of January).  The risk here is worth the reward in my opinion.

i thought bitbay team will be having a busey week, not just friday?

We're hoping for a new website tomorrow.  FAQ was yesterday.

Realistically, there is not much we can do outside of waiting for development of the market.  There is a new wallet coming out Friday but the majority of December/January is waiting on the marketplace.  The Bitbay team, if I am not misjudging, is a mostly behind the scenes team who will show the fruits of their work once the marketplace is live.  Their goal is to populate the marketplace and advertise it.

Based on everything I have read, that is my impression.  With Open Bazaar coming (without smart contracts) it is kind of a race to establish a marketplace so I think that the target dates will be met within reason.  It's sounds like a serious venture and some might call me naive (based on the crypto mentality which should include many having gone through instances of getting burned by a dev; I don't think that is the case here).

So yeah...busy week indeed...relatively speaking I suppose...

435  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BitBay |Decentralized Marketplace|Smart Contracts|IoT Tech|Markets Open on: December 03, 2014, 01:15:41 AM
Had high hopes for this one... so far its just been sad.... so much dumping and below ICO price, ICO coins should have addresses where the btc raised can be sent to so that it can be monitored by the community, so they know if the dev is just dumping his 'free' coins or not..

Bitswift and Bytecent did a good job as far as return on ICO coins go... wonder where this one went wrong?

My .2 bay

Both have significantly less coins in circulation and completely different projects.

I don't think that this one 'went wrong' at all.  A large majority of the coins are not on the market and as such the price is easy to manipulate.  As well, people who bought in at the crowd sale knew the time frame that David and the BitBay team were aiming for.  Nothing has changed along those lines.

I think that it should be common knowledge by now that the hedging is intended to provide a stable currency for the marketplace; it's necessary when trading a new currency for goods/services that a currency not lose value (or even gain which produces sellers remorse).  If the hedging works than the investment is a no brainer and all eyes are on the marketplace.  It will be the only one with smart contracts, the viability of such for real world use I fully expect to see debates on for the next few months.

It's going to be interesting and I expect it to go either way with cautious optimism.  I'm looking forward to the new website which hopefully contains a forum so we don't have to rely solely on this thread for updates.

Looks interesting.  14-20 million coins mined over 260 days if my calculations are semi accurate.

The new specs are interesting as well.  I would be interested in hearing more about the Region Codes...

I hope everything is okay.  We don't need another exchange to fail.

Thanks!

Hadn't paid any attention to this coin in the past few weeks as I am usually very wary with new stuff coming out (have most of my investments in DRK).  After reading through most of the thread and the very well put together FAQ I think I'm going to place a bid since it's clear something is happening soon and I don't wanna miss out.

I think that at this point it can be stated that they are definitely serious about this project.  It's kind of exciting.  I'm cautiously optimistic and am very much looking forward to the new website and wallet release.
440  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BitBay |Decentralized Marketplace|Smart Contracts|IoT Tech|Markets Open on: December 01, 2014, 07:21:48 PM
Hypothetical scenario:

Suppose Bob sells a guitar to Alice.
Both of them deposit the value in a shared account.

Bob gets the payment and notifies the system that all is good.
Alice does get the guitar and is satisfied with it. She however forgets to notify the system in order for the release of the amount from the double escrow account

The escrow times out and both of them loose  money .
i.e:
alice has now payed x(Deposit) +x(money payed to bob) = 2x
and bob has nothing now => x(money received from alice ) -  x(deposit) =0 [and the guitar is gone]

Is there a way to recover from that ?

Please note: I am a substantial investor in bitbay and believe it its future .. This is just a question ..not a fud:).

Why not just have an escrow period that is sufficiently long enough with daily reminders in the wallet after a substantial amount of time has passed?
