2061  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Release of open source point of sale system (w/ video) on: August 26, 2011, 12:09:31 AM
Again, this green addresses idea is very promising.

The only thing I don't like about green addresses is that as a recipient if I refuse to take the money and send it back, it is not charged back to the person that sent it to me.

I had a discussion about donations to a political party as it might turn out to be very funny with the laws in place in Germany:
Parties are not allowed to take anonymous donations above 500€.
Immediately returning the money counts as not taking it.
If they can't refuse to take them (as they went to them cash in an envelope/in a mail with a bitcoin wallet attached/sent from a green address) they have to give the money to the president of the German Bundestag.
I would love to see what this guy dues with bitcoins Smiley
2062  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transporting $12 billion in gold internationally estimated to cost $400 million on: August 25, 2011, 10:31:25 PM
Realisticly (in your silly hypothetical premise) to have $12B in bitcoin worth means:

- the owner of this $12B would never own more than 5% of the total bitcoin (or else its just funny fake money like ixcoin), so total bitcoin worth would need to be $12B * 20 = $240B
- there are 7.127M coins right now. so each would be worth ~$34,000 each

- the current minimum transfer fee is 0.0005 i think?  So $17 transfer fee. Still better .... But if you factor in the volatility of bitcoin, if everyone saw such a giant transfer they would assume apocalypse and sell everything down to zero before 6 confirmations. Thus the fee would end up being Close to the total amount of $12Billion.

lol

I would assume that a 5% of all bitcoins transaction would not cause such a big disruption but sure, some would wonder. I would guess that by that time, there would also be enough people around to stabilize the prices so volatility will be less and less of a problem.
2063  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: No bitcoin in Iran on: August 24, 2011, 01:23:09 PM
Hi guys,

back from Iran I'm happy my thread got some attention and yes, I hope the bitcoin project gets more aware of how accessible it is around the world.

In Iran people use proxies to see the internet without censorship. I will try to find an Iranian proxy so I see the internet through their eyes and get more aware of what websites not to use to stay visible for the people there.

Else: Go visit Iran! I never experienced more hospitality. Maybe 2% do speak some English but I travelled via couchsurfing.org and so I had great contacts - and now friends in all the cities I've been to. Worst thing that happened were people charging me twice the regular price.
2064  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Illegal content in the blockchain on: August 24, 2011, 12:55:37 PM
somehow this discussion got back to "with the right key any sequence of bits can be illegal".

Guess this is pointless as it is possible for sure to get any data into the chain. Just donate x satoshi to the faucet every hour with x being the ascii value of a letter of for example the "satanic verses". 8bph is slow. 2 months per page. but who would stop you? Later you announce that transactions from this one address form the satanic verses if read in sequence of their occurrence. No way to remove. Easy to decode. No bogus one time key needed.

the other thing was: if i open a letter with child porn/get such stuff smuggled into my browser cache ... no: those are examples where you don't know of the illegal content. this thread is about what if you know it is there and know how to decode but don't want it? so the analogy with the newspaper would rather be: what if somebody gets miniature child porn into a magazine add? the answer is quite clear: the magazine would not be allowed for sales from the moment they know about it.

i still see this could be a serious problem that might require drastic measures at some point like "genesis block 2" with all the balances but without the transactions to clean up the mess and i see no way to prevent such data from getting in. in some countries judges might be relaxed about it but some might make bitcoin illegal for such illegal content in the chain.
2065  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: No bitcoin in Iran on: August 16, 2011, 09:02:16 PM
gah, guys!

this is not only about if and how could i get hands on bitcoin now but also generally about how will it ever be successful in iran and cuba where there would definitely be a need for bitcoin.

and no, the bitcoin download is not blocked by the iranians but by sourceforge and google code. they point me to these documents:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/sitelegal/wiki/Terms_of_Use#ProhibitedPersons
... oh, actually the desktop client is on github which is accessible but due to limited bandwidth there is little point in getting it up and running for me now anyway ...

and no, it has nothing to do with sha256 as all of sourceforge and google code is blocked here. sorry but that is a reason for me to use other hosters. too general embargoes are always evil.
2066  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / No bitcoin in Iran on: August 16, 2011, 06:44:07 AM
Hi

I'm traveling in Iran at the moment and there is a good reason for using bitcoin here:
Due to embargo there is no international credit card you could use in Iran. Business men told me that their transaction costs are 8% when dealing with the USA as they have to send the money via Dubai.

Unfortunately using bitcoin is not possible for several reasons:
"High speed internet" is available to every Iranian in cities. Unfortunately high speed internet is limited to 128kb/s wich is a problem when downloading the block chain.
The bigger problem arises from the embargo though: many sites block Iranian requests including the sourceforge downloads for the client, google code for the source etc.
I could not find a link to download the bitcoin client here. Could you please add trustworthy mirrors for Iran, Cuba, etc. or just straight stop using pages that block the spreading of FOSS to such countries??

Regards,

giszmo
2067  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: July 31, 2011, 01:35:26 AM

In BitCoin there is no encryption involved. Only signatures. It may be the same field of research but there are no secrets transmitted in the blockchain so most likely those censorship laws don't apply to bitcoin.
2068  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: July 24, 2011, 11:34:32 PM
I don't think everything the press has ever written about Bitcoin needs to be on the page. I also don't think screenshots are needed.

thanx for a reply. ok then only the most notable articles? with original point of views? for me it is also noteworthy to see the first article in a new country etc.
the forum is no good place for presenting articles. only for collecting them.

Drugs may be new net currency fall

July 24, 2011 at 11:51, Updated: 24 July 2011 at 14:55

A new currency is emerging on the Internet. Net currency Bitcoin traded without middlemen and fees and expected by users challenge current banking system. But U.S. politicians now want to prohibit Bitcoin when they suspect that the anonymous and highly encrypted currency used by drug dealers.
Netdrugexpert Cecilia Fant of the Criminal Investigation Department says that a similar ban may be the case also in Sweden.

Haven't seen any international sites reporting on this though

Thanx.

I didn't get *any* feedback on my effort to bring all these references to the wiki Press page.
I would continue by adding this one, too but somehow feel like I'm the only one that thinks it is a good idea to have screen shots and some meta data.
Sorry for bringing this up again but if there is no reaction at all I would assume it is a waste of time but telling me "hey, it is a waste of time" would help big deal.

(As I don't understand Swedish and now see the need to have an english excerpt in the template, I'm bringing this up, now.)
2070  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: July 23, 2011, 11:57:20 AM
I'd like to invite you to use the wiki. I just wrote a template for this. This thread is nice but a some more condensed form might be better.

I integrated the template in Press Wiki Page for 3 sources to firstly showcase the difference it could make and secondly to improve on it.
Press will love to get a condensed view of other press articles so a good overview will help to get press again I guess.

I hope I can motivate others to join in this slight extra effort Smiley

2071  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Illegal content in the blockchain on: July 22, 2011, 12:37:55 AM
how do others handle this? you can always generate illegal content where numbers are involved. a bank would also not rearrange transactions just because they represent evil data although that evil data would end up at the recipient of the payments and stay stored at the bank.
2072  Local / Projektentwicklung / Re: Zweites Münchner Bitcoin Meetup am 27.07.11 (IN 7 TAGEN ) on: July 20, 2011, 11:22:45 PM

Ja was zum Geier!

2073  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Lüfter -> Richtung des Luftstromes -> Effizienz on: July 15, 2011, 09:51:39 PM
2074  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Lüfter -> Richtung des Luftstromes -> Effizienz on: July 15, 2011, 07:23:41 PM

2076  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Detailed Calculator on: July 10, 2011, 11:38:38 PM
yes, scrolling is broken. you can scroll by marking the text and within a certain range by using the mouse wheel.

@OP: total crap, sorry. so it defaults to 32% per what? day? 10 days? 2016 blocks? the output is also rather useless. If I hit calculate for 180 days I am not particularly interested in day #111. reduce the output to 10 lines at max. with something like: 1st week you will stay above 0.02BTC/day, 1st month above 0.015BTC/day .... and in the end you will have 0.532BTC. (there is no point in giving more than 3 digits precision. Neither for difficulty nor for results as I doubt you will achieve more than 1.5 digits precision at predicting the network growth rate.
2077  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [IDEA] Bitcoin Dare. on: July 10, 2011, 11:54:40 AM
voting the winner will be a problem when money is involved. make it per user and they will register users to grab the check pot. make it per bitcoin and somebody will just vote x+1BTC to his own video to get the winning vote.
screw democracy in this case, make the jury public, make videos of a jury debating the best entries and attribute the winner with reasoning and fun in the show.
2078  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Lüfter -> Richtung des Luftstromes -> Effizienz on: July 10, 2011, 12:37:23 AM

2079  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ATTN!!] Bitcoin Security nearly Breached on: July 10, 2011, 12:06:28 AM
No, it seems to me the risk is in the pool doing something that will benefit itself AND its miners and being able to pull that off alone. The most obvious thing would be to increase (let's say double) the mining reward (or refuse to lower it to 25 BTC by the end of next year). Not only would that double the pool owner's income (in BTC terms), it would also double what the miners earn, and would more likely attract more miners.

Well if this is your scenario then why wouldn't they just decide to make the reward 10k per block as of today? Yes they could fork the chain but those blocks would not get accepted by the rest of the bitcoinDs. So you mine BTC' that will not comply to BTC. Guess that's a stupid plan. Exchanges and honest users would not accept those.

Better they start a new chain then ...
2080  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Android Bitcoin Client Bounty (1740 BTC pledged) on: July 09, 2011, 12:50:02 AM
bitcoin wallet keeps eating wallet files and is not a functional wallet yet. unfortunately that is true for the other app as far as i read here on the forum. some guy got the same issue with persistent crashes at startup that i know too well from bitcoin wallet.

i hope that bitcoin wallet stays as honest as it was and sticks with testnet for the time being as i so far lost all my test coins i used to show it to my friends. if the trouble is due to bitcoinJ@android then bitcoin wallet was the first to receive a reward in my eyes but bitcoinJ deserves its share as well once the issues are solved.
