ATTENTION SPOILER: WALTER JUNIOR COMMITS SUIZIDE!
Where are the real trolls?

btw, I like the picture but I hate the copy protection they have. Spent 10s trying to copy that picture to decide they are evil.
1483  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally, a noble cause!: Watsi.org (a Bitcoin100 funding suggestion) on: September 03, 2012, 04:41:54 AM
@Giszmo, to be fair and honest, at the onset I was trying to find a link connecting you and Chase Adam, but I guess there isn't one. You can easily see how, on the surface, it just looked weird. Sorry, bud.

Well, please go ahead. I really love how people are paranoid here. Please also provide a TLDR to your analysis.
1484  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: September 02, 2012, 10:49:37 PM
Nevertheless I think 0.5% fee is enough (than 1% fee now). If I'm trading with a real crook, oneself has to find a solution, you can not and will not help (money is given, but escrow not released, for example). This escrow mechanism is very helpful, but not scam proof.

I think there is no easy solution if the scammer is going to scam you on the spot, eg. run with the cash. This can happen with any traditional trade, not just with bitcoins. The thing is, that the buyer has to understand the system (request the verify code) before he hands out the cash, and he should be safe. Of course the scam can happen other way as well, the seller releases the transaction and the buyer runs after that without giving the money. If you fear this kind of robbery, then probably local trading isn't for you. I myself feel pretty confident doing the trades IRL, but I understand that it is not for everyone.

We will look at the fee policy.

I agree 1% is crispy for an exchange that never handles fiat at all. On the other hand as long as you don't intervene when I do follow up trades with the same person totally out of bands (I so far always traded more when meeting in person than the deal was about on localbitcoins and bitcoinary), I see it as a fee to get me together with potential traders. To build up my decentralized net of traders so to say. If I wanted to trade quickly I would put them all BCC and ask, who wants to trade. This mail should just not contain too much blabla so they consider it spam and regret having done business with me after all.

I think I found the major announcement:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=105100.0

 Smiley

Why is that noteworthy? Bitcoin community's women quota increased by 33%? More equality = more stability? Hmm … makes sense to me.
1486  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: September 02, 2012, 12:31:11 AM
I  still think it's an Android tablet with adhoc bitcoin networking through wifi.

That would be cool, but I'm not sure how that would contribute to any new "stability"

Oh, so Google and Apple announced they just settled their argument and both launch this Bitcoin Mesh Network pre-installed on iPhone 5 and put it into the next Android version? I heard, Nokia is joining, too. No? It's just some toy project of somebody who tried it on his custom board and it worked? For a mesh network you need saturation and this would really only work if my completely utopian scenario #1 came true. If "only" android did it, it would take twice as long to saturate any area in the world with bitcoin connectivity over wifi. If you would patch all existing Android Bitcoin clients to have a service that burns your battery to provide this functionality, you would never ever ever reach saturation in downtown New York.

Edit: Maybe it would be sufficient for the BitPay cubicle Wink
1487  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally, a noble cause!: Watsi.org (a Bitcoin100 funding suggestion) on: September 01, 2012, 06:05:38 PM
Besides, Bruno, you are such a theatrical troll. "proud to announce" with this stock picture of them in your OP. For the record: All my communication with Bruno about watsi was via this and the other thread. I did not imply that there was anything to "announce". They are remotely interested.

My analysis of how bitcoin could help was that out of all the combinations of receiving BTC, converting to btc in the US, converting to USD in the US, sending BTC to Nepal for example and convert to Rupees there, sending BTC to the hospital concluded that BTC only is suitable for receiving anonymous donations and convert them to USD. The total fees that they pay for sending money there are in the 5% range that BTC can barely compete with right now as you can't expect doctors or medical suppliers in Nepal to accept BTC at this point yet.
1488  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally, a noble cause!: Watsi.org (a Bitcoin100 funding suggestion) on: September 01, 2012, 05:49:14 PM
Hi guys!

I love how critical you all are and how you would most likely find out the color of Chase's underwear if you wanted to. Please investigate watsi.org. You already investigated further than I maybe did.

I found watsi.org via a link at hacker news and had a 12 mails (6+6) long dialog with Chase. Last mail from him was introducing his CTO but on my reply 2 days ago they didn't have any further questions for now.

I am not involved in this project and I understand your skepticism. Provably Fair is the field of crypto nerds, so maybe you want to sell Chase not only the idea of Bitcoin but also some other ideas how to proof that the money actually went 100% into a treatment that otherwise would 100% not have taken place.

I have my doubt that it is actually possible to proof not to be a scam even if you totally give up the privacy of the patients. What do you want to do? A Q&A-hangout on air with the patient and a doctor explaining his problem in funny English? Yeah, well, most likely many people in the world would be that desperate to do this but I hope you come up with solutions that leave the patients some dignity.

To my understanding watsi.org takes no cut at all of the money you put into a treatment. If they can be transparent to a degree that you find no loop-holes I want them to get all the support that they can get. Bitcoin shines at scams but it also shines at transparency and Chase was interested in anonymous donations via Bitcoin and I don't know any other way than Bitcoin to have anonymous donations transparent.
1489  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: September 01, 2012, 06:37:19 AM
It is now September where I am.

I don't understand how an open source project can hide major developments. I assume it isn't technical in nature.

I hope it is not directly related to code changes but even that would be ok. Each and everyone can fork the project if he doesn't like Gavin's style.

I think, this whole thread is pointless as it is hype for nothing in the end or maybe Gavin had some private project going or heard something that might turn out as vapor ware. Looking at Gox tells me that the guys with the money don't seam to expect much.
1490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many Bitcoins do you have? (Re-envisioned) on: August 31, 2012, 11:51:51 PM
Why do people always want to know this? You know how many bitcoins there are in circulation and if you think you will get even slightly accurate numbers I tell you I always vote random on this question. It's none of your business. Like Rick Falkvinge who bought last year and then claimed to have no coins left. Why should I believe him? Why should the admins here know about my bitcoins? Or some forum-hacker? Cosby told me this forum might not be the most secure one.
1491  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Followup Interview About BitInstant's Bitcoin MasterCard on: August 31, 2012, 11:46:19 PM
Hmm …
Quote
There are multiple options for card funding being investigated. BTC->USD conversion could occur:
When the BTC arrives at the address on the card (Charlie called this the "worst-case scenario")

I was thinking about a case where I would want this "worst-case scenario" at least as an optional configuration of the card.
Imagine a brick and mortar business that is to be convinced to accept bitcoin.
Would he accept this Credit Card? Clearly yes if it's a Master Card.
Would he do the card handling himself instead of the customer? Maybe slightly weird but if the card somehow magically always has the money when he needs it to pay his customer's bill, maybe yes.

Now you only have to get the restaurant owner one of these wonder cards and tell him to put up a sign that reads something like "Bitcoins accepted. Please charge with this QR Code".

Ok, by the time that more than one customer at a time claims to have charged the magic card, he will have to learn to read the transaction history of his address, but as long as bitcoin customers are a geek minority, this could be cool. I'm not talking about McDonalds but I know bars in Munich where the beer is self service and you pay when you leave.

It is September in Bangkok.

Somebody's trying hard to be ignorant.
1493  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: August 31, 2012, 05:20:06 AM
do you really know that he's a nice and honest person? do you know him personally and well?

I didn't say that but I guess it's a typo on your end. I don't know him personally, although a person I ultimately trust claims I have been at an event with him long before he was in the news. Said person says he's been an arrogant idiot causing trouble back then and arrogant is what I find his public statements, too, so SuperP's concern doesn't sound far fetched to me.
1494  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: August 31, 2012, 03:00:06 AM
I don't think Dotcom is THE announcement, but someone mentioned it, so I'll expand on why I think Dotcom is interested.  Kim Dotcom did a similar scheme where he said he was saving a company from bankruptcy by investing a bunch, but he didn't, and instead sold his shares after the rumor caused the price to go up. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Dotcom#Insider_trading_and_embezzlement)  I can see him wanting to do something like this to try and create another rise to gain similar rewards.

My guts agree with you. Dotcom is not a nice and honest person. But I doubt he is invested in Bitcoin. That's not his shoe size.

Edit: yet.
1495  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Announcement Regarding State Rep Mark Warden's Bitcoin Strategy on: August 30, 2012, 10:16:19 PM
Mark Warden's new, totally-compliant, Bitcoin contributions page just launched:

If it needs intermediaries like bitpay to be "totally-compliant", then bitcoin failed. Bitpay deserves honor for all they are doing for bitcoin and there are many businesses that I guess are better off using their service for now but if you really need this middle man to do a donation (hey, here there is no danger of double-spends or volatility to eliminate.) then I can't cheer for joy.

Edit: I get an "internal server error" when i middle-mouse-click aka open in new window the "Bitcoin order now" buttons.

Also it's slightly confusing that the shopping cart accumulates my several clicks. When I clicked the $10 button and it said "approximately $150" I checked at mtgloxlive if BTC just exploded before I realized my shopping cart was full with other donations. The cart content is color:#666; font-size:.9em;. Why? Why not show the customer what he's buying with #0 and 1.3em?

Yes, it was mentioned earlier but my favorite so far is Kim Dotcom.
1498  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Iranian players are blocked from playing WoW: an opportunity for Bitcoin? on: August 30, 2012, 04:36:59 AM
Just a thought if you guys think about white knighting better do it for free.

Wanna play this American game? Here I made something for you so you can use it but you need this new currency to pay me... oh btw to buy this currency you need to get USD first.
This thread is a testament to the delusional state of the bitcoin community. So much as introducing bitcoin to new cultures, bawahaha doing great Grin
  • Yes, most likely most bitcoins are in the hands of US citizens so if they are willing to sell them, they most likely want USD for them.
  • People sending remittance are already outside of Iran wanting to send money in, so they own some non-IRR, probably USD. It's not Iranians in Iran that go buy dollars on their black market to send them to MtGox.

I strongly believe that BTC will play a very important role in the world and that it will be traded far beyond 1000USD/BTC within my lifetime if not within a couple of years. I hope that through remittance it will be distributed  somewhat more evenly geographically so the super powers of today are not just even more powerful again, only because they were located close to where the new world currency was invented.

BTW you already can buy cool stuff from Iran without any Iranian sending USD to MtGox Wink
1499  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Iranian players are blocked from playing WoW: an opportunity for Bitcoin? on: August 29, 2012, 11:48:14 PM
Then, how does an Iranian buy bitcoins? Impossible right now. Fix these problems and then bother gamer kids.

For Iranians, Bitcoin should be the tool of choice to receive remittance as through banks they loose up to 50% in fees and the next 50% they loose via inflation. If you operate any service, put yourself in the place of an Iranian who does only speak Farsi and maybe some Arab or Aseri. Bitcoin does not exist.
I think you answered your own question. Iranians who want to buy bitcoins can get them from other Iranians receiving them as remittances. All that it would take is education of the requsite communities to let them know what options are available.

Yes, the demand should be there but it has to be guided.

"Hey, you want to play WOW? Just go find somebody with family abroad and convince them to use Bitcoin for remittance payments."
"Bit-WHAT?!?!"

We need services in Farsi and other exotic languages. We need our infrastructure hosted on free servers that are not ignoring requests from suppressed people.
1500  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Iranian players are blocked from playing WoW: an opportunity for Bitcoin? on: August 29, 2012, 11:00:59 PM
How would Bitcoin help in Iran? There is no information available in Farsi and the bitcoin-qt can not be downloaded from Iran. Neither the code nor the binary. All blocked. By the the country of freedom, not the Mullahs.
