Ok, for the record, when I made this post, bitcoinwireless.com had the launchrock.com favicon and as I did not realize the launchrock reference but only the huge red "W" in bitcoinWireless, I took it for the bitcoinwireless favicon. (and yes, I'm slightly surprised to see a "we provide a solution for for charging your phone with 300 companies worldwide in some days"-"company" to use some shady 3rd party service for the official rumors page.)

21 pages for a post discussing an article vaguely announcing that there will be an announcement. Imagine how long this thread would be if some real information was given!
With nothing to imagine or speculate, it would be seven posts long. Wanna bet? I loled You dare posting in this thread without clarifying Somehow all these pending announcements make me feel like it's all just pump and dump.

Should have been locked.
Oh come on! If you don't like it, don't read it. The only moderator action I would see fit is move it to speculation. I liked to give my bet and I'm curious if we ever will know who came closest.

Keep in mind that a lot of traffic from the region goes through proxies, VPNs, TOR etc., so I wouldn't consider these graphs too accurate.
I wonder how many Iranian users actually use bitcoin WITH their own IP. I would suspect the average computer savvy paranoid bitcoin user would use a VPN or Tor in fear of administrative punishment. In Iran, everybody uses VPN, not only the computer savvy paranoid bitcoin user. Without VPN, you can't see 95% (by traffic) of the internet. Facebook is popular but blocked without VPN.

I was in Iran two months ago visiting a friend. It was an absolutely amazing time (the people are wonderful and detest their government, my friend had gotten a visa to move to the US which is why I decided to finally visit; it was now or never). When I was there it was 20,000 Rial to the dollar - a few weeks prior I believe it had been 12,000. Right now it is almost 25,000. So Iran is experiencing massive inflation. Probably as a result of EU oil sanctions.
Yes, exchange rates are slightly hard to find. I'm surprised. Anyway I remember last year in August I counted 10,000IRR as 1USD. BTW if you look up Rial prices online you have to make sure to get the actual street rate - I believe there are 3 different exchange rates and only the worst one is what normal people can actually get. Anyway, a great reason for Bitcoin to take hold in Iran. I sort of wanted to try running the client there but didn't want to get my friend in trouble It was rather ironic - we had a WiMax connection but it was severely rate limited! My problem with bitcoin was censorship – but not the Iranian censorship. The US-censorship. Many Bitcoin-resources are hosted on servers that don't export to rouge states. Else I'm pretty sure Iranis would not get into trouble for running a bitcoin node. What I did was hosted wallets. It would actually have been much more comfortable to travel with bitcoin as there were no ATMs that work with western banks so as a tourist you have to enter Iran with cash and people know that.

Just read your ad in Bitcoin Magazine #2 which I got in London and was wondering: Any progress or updates on the project? Looks very promising! Should be launching within a few days. Grr guys! Launch already! I have 3000 Pesos on my phone left and hope to be able to charge it with BTC next time which should be due in a few days $ wget bitcoinwireless.com --2012-09-24 17:25:41-- http://bitcoinwireless.com/ Resolving bitcoinwireless.com... 54.243.194.117 Connecting to bitcoinwireless.com|54.243.194.117|:80... failed: Connection refused.

I have a Bitcoin related business plan and I plan to submit to the Oct 8 deadline for Startup Chile. I'll PM you and maybe you can share more about your background with me.
looking forward to your pm. Are you already in Chile, too?

Last year I did a rough estimate and came to the conclusion that if you wanted to hire super computers #1 down to whatever it takes, you would end up hiring the top 40 to run a 51% attack for as long as you want to keep the attack up. I only looked at their GPU's and basically accounted 0 for all that only had CPUs which might be slightly incorrect.
… of course this does not answer the question Is there a larger known networked computing project? Those super computers are programmable to do all kind of shit while in the age of ASICs we will have very dumb nodes that will not be suitable for anything but bitcoin, which is kind of sad.

I'm actually very surprised to see the bitcoin rate still at 11.95. For me this means that people with money at hands did not follow these rumors at all and the price has more solid reasons than stupid speculation. Anybody who's taking this thread seriously should have sold yesterday.
Why do you say that when the news hasn't been released yet? Because to me it seams there is no big news everybody is waiting for. Just a pump by people that claimed to have talked to Gavin. I would expect to see some dump the more it comes clear there is no miraculous Amazon accepting Bitcoin out of the blue news.

Hmm … evil plan … get hands on some google glass that rules out less obvious dead ends in real time and allows you to semi-greedy draw the solution on the fly. Writing such an app would be fun when the app gains knowledge of the maze gradually and you have to maybe follow more than one option until the person holding the pen and the glasses approaches the area where the options get resolved.

Obviously it will be announced at the conference, yes. Unfortunately, with all the built-up hype, it is almost guaranteed to be a major anti-climactic let-down.
It's the setup for a classic profit situation: Buy on Rumor, Sell on News. Unless the news is less exciting than the rumor, in which case you lose. No. The idea is that rumors drive the price to a climax at the delivery date which is why you should sell slightly before the delivery date to maximize your profit. If the rumors were placed deliberately, this is what you call pump and dump which is very common among penny stocks and bitcoin (I see bitcoin as a very accessible penny stock in that sense). Big difference between penny stock and bitcoin= $11.60 Ok, I'm not into stocks but I watched some youtube videos on the subject. Some really care about the value of a single stock but I don't understand how this is of any relevance. For me a penny stock is something with a market cap low enough to be the play ball of single market participants.

couldn't someone just run a program to load all random urls until they find ones with coins in them and take the coins?
Yes, in the same way that someone could just try all the private/public keypairs and see which ones correspond to Bitcoin addresses with coins in them. aka no (it would take longer than the universe will exist counting from when it started.)

It shows a box at the bottom of each thread in which to reply.
I could swear it didn't but I guess I had the wrong dropdown.
|
|
|
To add, doQuote() does nothing if quick reply is off. Oh my beloved quick reply, why did I not think of turning you on before?
Thanx for the hint. "Use quick reply on topic display: …" was the problem. Show (off/on by default) causes the problem and I don't see what this option does at all other than break my mmb.
