81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is It Possible To Mine Without Downloading The Whole Blockchain? on: April 22, 2019, 01:17:18 PM
So if I mine using a mining pool (ie with my own server, not using a paid-for remote mining service where its all done on the server run by the provider) then I don't need to download the blockchain?

Correct. Only the mining pool has to download the full blockchain. When you mine with a mining pool, all the heavy load has to be done by the mining pool operator. Your local mining software just has to send shares to the pool as soon as possible. No blockchain has to be download locally.
82  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is It Possible To Mine Without Downloading The Whole Blockchain? on: April 22, 2019, 01:11:04 PM
In particular I'd like to use XMR-Stak miner and use it maybe to mine Monero.
For Monero, forget about this, unless you have a huge huge huge mining farm. It doesn't pay off to wait to find a new block for too long, as opposed to sharing the reward together with other miners from a mining pool. Eventually, in the limit of very long time, both rewards should be similar, but in the case of solo mining it may take an eternity to see some money.

But if you want to mine some new not yet known coins, it may be wise to do it solo.

Is it possible to do this? I understand you can configure a wallet to connect to a remote node. I wonder if its possible to do a similar thing with a mining node.
In any case you have to download the entire blockchain and be very very good connected with nearby nodes so that when you find a block, your result is quickly propagated.
83  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Nicehash and RX 470/570 on: April 21, 2019, 05:24:44 AM
Yup. Nicehash-Ethash, or Ethash in general, should be the most lucrative algo for your cards at the moment. The fact that the benchmark doesn't see this means that it is not done properly. Is there any reason you insist on Lyra2RE v3?
84  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New token on: April 21, 2019, 05:08:33 AM
Look for information about the token on the forum? Or do you want to know feedback about us? More informations: https://www.neuralium.com/?lang=en
I just visited the website. Seems pretty new, they say it launches in May. A lot of modern features to be implemented in the future, like quantum cryptography. But no team members on the website. You should be able to check the project leaders to try to see if it is legit. I also see no whitepaper, no github link... They may want to fix this before the launch.
85  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: BAT on the move on: April 20, 2019, 08:01:35 PM
I was told BAT has a reward program for using their brave brower, but will need any assistance on how to about it.
I don't think it is active yet. The reward program, that is. I also installed it in under Windows, and I like the browser, but when I click on the reward program, it's not in function. At least that is what I get. Someone with more info could explain if this is really so, and when this program is expected to get going.
86  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Profiting from VIX indacaters. on: April 20, 2019, 05:55:52 PM
Never heard of VIX indicators before, and that is for a reason. It is a "stocks based" indicator to judge the volatility of a stock. I think VIX has questionable applicability in the crypto market, but maybe, just maybe don't take my word for it and do some back-testing. I just looked at tradingview. There are plenty of (imported) VIX indicators like VIX/FIX strategy, VIX Fear Gauge, VIX contango and others. I may check them in the future to see how good they are.
87  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How much mining power do you have? on: April 19, 2019, 03:10:55 PM
I don't get it. Why would you split? You choose the most profitable one and stick to it, until you find a more profitable coin, then you switch your entire mining power to it. Now, I remember during the time I was mining that the profitability of certain coins changed all the time, so I had to do a lot of switching but I never split my mining power. Maybe there are legitimate reasons to split but I never did so.

Depends on your situation, strategy, and cash flow I'd imagine.  I can give you a few reasons I split my farm up.

1)  I have several different rig configurations (RX rigs, Vega, GTX 60/70/80, etc), and they all perform a bit differently on different algos.  So I try to keep them pointed where they perform the best/better, for the most part.

2)  We dont take profits short term at all.  Other than my time keeping everything running, we have zero overhead...and the time I spend on it I dont put a whole lot of value in.  It's not that I dont value my time, I do...but it's mostly just time I would otherwise be spending playing video games or a round of golf or something, so it's a value add instead of a value negative.  As such, our time horizon is medium to long term hold, so I'm not overly concerned about short term profitibility.   Mainly we want our BTC/ETH bags to grow, and have zero time/desire to day/swing trade coins on exchanges.   Essentially we are using hash power to dollar cost average in directly to a specific portfolio allocation.  For the most part, we only use the coins to buy parts (build/upgrade rigs, replace dead fans/risers/etc).

3)  Taking a few swings at newer algos when they first release, and the difficulty is low.  Like I said in a previous post, we dont do a whole lot of this...mainly just let software auto switch on it's own.  I'd guess, on average, about 20% of total hashing power spends about a week or so a month on something speculative.  Now that I type this out and read what I'm saying, I probably need to do a better job of tracking this...

Anyway, I doubt what I'm doing is "right".  I'm quite sure there are better ways to go about doing it....but considering the resources we have available, the professional & practical limitations we have as a group, and our longer term goal this is what is working.  Currently.  I reserve the right to change my mind.

Thank you very much for your elaborate answer. I see now it is a much different game when you have several different rigs. It makes more sense the way you do it, not chasing the daily swings and not engaging on the market every day. But then, as you said, you don't have too much room for speculations or experiments. You have to mine the more established coins, not worrying what will happen next week or next month (which you would have to worry about if you mined some new hot coin).

89  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Binance Chain a treat to Ethereum? on: April 19, 2019, 07:13:45 AM
AFAIK it is centralized. How could it be decentralized, if it is a new network backed up by a company. Even if it is a big company like Binance, you are still betting on the success of that company when you buy its shares. So no. I think it is not a competitor to Ether. Ether, as flawed as it is, is still much more decentralized than this new mainnet. If you want something that is really decentralized, it is Bitcoin.
90  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Newbies that has interest in trading! on: April 18, 2019, 07:38:46 PM
Forex is Foreign Exchange you can buy stocks in here that is worldwide. Example, you can buy apple stocks, Microsoft stocks and many more.
Strictly speaking, Forex is just for trading the national currencies, like USDEUR, USDCAD, USDAUD, and the other pairs. There are about 26 main forex pairs, and other less popular ones. Stocks are not related to Forex.
91  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Binance's $BNB, Crypto's Wild Card on: April 18, 2019, 07:09:50 PM
If I read this news correctly, the native BNB coin is migrating from the Ethereum network to their own network. This begs the question who will run (secure) the BNB mainnet? How will they do that. BNB may be stable, but the reason for that is that it is like a share in a company, not cryptocurrency in the real sense of the word. I look forward to the DEX anyhow, hopefully it will have high liquidity like their CEX.
92  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Phishing myetherwallet site on: April 14, 2019, 09:29:10 AM
Can you give more details? In particular what I would like to know is how and why were you redirected? Did you visit any insecure site? These redirectons should not happen unless your computer is infected with viruses or you visit some scam websites. Were you using the latest version of the browser and what browser you were using?
Generally when you search in google, you will get the official linm byt in some case, those scams sites however manage to rank in number 1 in google rank and people generally don't notice the url and get redirected to the scam sites.
OK, I understand now. That could explain it. The OP was not typing the Myetherwallet URL directly in the address bar. He was using Google to open the site, which is a very very bad practice. The scam sites do not need to rank in number 1 organically. They can buy Google ads to get on top of the search results. The moral of the story: never go to Myetherwallet via Google and always double check the URL!

94  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Minimum wage salary from real job compare to crypto earning which is better? on: April 13, 2019, 12:47:27 PM
There are well payed programming jobs in the crypto sphere, like the others have suggested. If you are a good programmer, you can earn a lot, much more than in other areas and much more than working for minimum wage salary. There are other crypto-related jobs that require no programming skills, but you have to have other skills and previous experience in marketing, public-relation, office jobs, and so on. If you are new to this sphere, hang around this forum to learn the basics but after that you should get involved in serious education if you want to have a real crypto job. What you can earn from bounties and airdrops is not even remotely comparable to even a minimum wage salary.
95  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: BitcoinSV will be delisting from binance on: April 13, 2019, 12:01:55 PM
I'm not a fan of BitcoinSV, so I don't care if it gets delisted. I also think that if that happen, BSV will automatically suffer from a huge dump and will have a questionable future to say the least. What I don't get is why the warning from the CEO and founder of Binance in the first place? If he finds the behavior of Craig Wright wrong, he should delist immediately. I don't think CW can change his behavior even if he tried.
96  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best methods for an offsite backup? on: April 13, 2019, 06:26:08 AM
I have to ask a question. You say one could BIP38 Password-encrypt one's Private key. How should one deal with the password itself? Sure, you may have no problems remembering the password, but what about in 10 or 20 years. Will you still remember it? You could write it down, but then is the problem really solved? Or am I missing something.

To add an extra layer you could upload a wrong seed, eg swap the 13th and 14th word.
I like this idea. You may also try to make a more elaborate, but pretty straight forward permutation that includes more of the seed words.
97  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Im a full Time Trader on: April 11, 2019, 08:28:17 PM
I have to ask: What does it mean being a full time trader? It can mean different things to different people. Some people even think that long term investing is trading. Could you explain what being a full time trader means for you? Because if it means that you trade for a living, and are not making any money that sounds horrible. Besides, you should give us more info: what pairs do you trade, what time frames, at what exchange, do you use leverage, are you trading crypto exclusively, etc.

Means i trade at the screen 3-4 hours per day. In 1 hour sessions. Then learn and prepare offline 3-4 hours per day. No other job. Meticulous number keeping records.

I should count how many trades Im in executing daily. Maybe 50- 100 per day. I make money from every day except 3 days that BTC dropped hard and it gouged my account profits. My management of these risks needing improving.

OK, I get it now. Here are some suggestions how to improve your trading. First, making 50 to 100 trades per day is way too much. You have to be virtually glued to the screen. This is not a good way to trade. Second, you definitely need better money management. Money management is number 1, more important than anything else. No drop, no sudden move can ruin your account if you have a proper money management. Number 2 is trading psychology. Do you manage to keep your emotions out of the way? People can rarely do that, but it is also essential. Number 3 is your trading system. This you can improve in time. But it doesn't matter how well your trading system is if you don't have the first two points settled.

99  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How Much Can Someone Realistically Make From Airdrops in 2019? on: April 11, 2019, 11:18:10 AM
Not worth it from my personal experience. Not even for pocket money. The time you spend filling up forms or other activities often associated with airdrops can be much much better spent. I have never received anything worth mentioning as a reward, so I stopped a long time ago. Even if you get a couple of bucks worth of coins, you will have to exchange them somewhere, which also costs your time and some Eth. That's why when I hear about a new airdrop, I immediately skip over it.
100  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: [GUIDE] How to place stop loss sell order. on: April 11, 2019, 10:30:14 AM
Speaking of stop losses, it makes me wonder when will Binance introduce a "take profit" feature together with a "stop loss" feature. As things stand right now, you can do either have a "stop loss" or a "take profit". And given that the rules of good trading require that you have to have a "stop loss", that mean that you can't have a "take profit" feature at the same time. It also means that you have to monitor the charts constantly to see if the take profit level has been reached to exit the trade. Pretty cumbersome if you ask me. Why people put up with this and don't complain is beyond me.
