When you used "Delete" to remove an address(es) from the Address Book then
for some reason you don't see all your addresses in "Received coins" tab.
If you restart your wallet the problem goes away.
It must be a bug ...

Ya, that shouldn't happen.

Can anybody else replicate this behavior?
2542  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin 100: Developed Specifically for Non-Profits on: December 26, 2012, 08:25:16 PM
They just have to add a way to accept Bitcoin to their donation page.

Their site requires registration to view the donation options.  This means there's no link that brings you directly to the page showing a bitcoin donation button or submit method.  I'm not sure if that matters, but I just wanted to point that out.
2543  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: $300+ Dwolla looking to trade for BTC/MTGox on: December 26, 2012, 07:50:20 PM
I have $365.6 in Dwolla up for trade for either BTC or MTGox.
All or part -- looking for quick, easy transactions.

You might also try posting in the Dwolla <--> USD thread.  There are many that follow that thread who have bitcoins and are looking for a trade paid for with Dwolla:

2544  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to monitor balance of multiple addresses of a paper wallet? on: December 26, 2012, 07:40:04 PM
Sorry about the necro thread, but there is now an answer for this inquiry:

Now, is there a site that will allow me to scan the QR codes of the addresses with my webcam? Cut and paste can get tedious

EasyWallet.org offers this from a mobile.  I don't know if this same capability exists for a webcam though.
2545  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: check balance of address without trusting block explorer on: December 26, 2012, 07:34:31 PM
How can one check the "balance" of an address without using a block explorer site - for example to verify if a paper wallet was funded successfully?

If the address (and private key) are in the wallet, there are RPC calls to provide this info.  For a paper wallet, you wouldn't have the address (and private key) in your wallet, so those calls won't help you in that instance.

The Bitcoin-Qt client (v0.7 and above) provides Raw Transactions (getrawtransaction, decoderawtransaction) that will give you this information but you need to know the transaction hash.

You can build a database with all the transactions by processing the transactions from the blocks of the longest chain  (getblockhash and getblock) plus the valid but unconfirmed transactions in the memory pool (listsinceblock), but that is not a trivial task. [Edit: There is also the monitortx patch that will help with this.]

There are other tools that can help as well.  Armory provides easy access to blockchain data, see the "Extras" folder.   Also libBitcoin might provide this to you as might ABE blockchain explorer source.    Or now there is libccoin even that might be useful:

If you are willing to use the Block Explorer to obtain the transaction hashes but then use your local bitcoind to obtain the amounts that might be a hybrid solution that works for you -- depending on the reasons you didn't want to use a hosted blockchain service.

There are other services providing this information as well:

2546  Economy / Lending / Re: Smallism loan request on: December 26, 2012, 07:18:22 AM
I have started to dwolla->mtgox->bitcoins process, but I guess it will take 7 days or so.

Well, not quite.  Last May Dwolla has instituted a 30-day probationary period for newly verified accounts.  Once you have your bank account verified (i.e,. you've confirmed the amounts of the two test deposits they send to you), another thirty days must pass before you can use any of those funds for transfer to a high-risk merchant, of which Mt. Gox, Camp BX and BitInstant (the only exchanges that accept Dwolla directly) are considered.

You might be able to find someone willing to exchange their Bitcoins for your Dwolla USDs though even some individuals are on the "high risk" list for their active trading with exchanges.

I want to get started "wheeling and dealing" ASAP.

You can lock in a purchase at today's rate through Coinbase.  Using their Instant verification (of your bank account), you can then place an order for some coins.  They will sit with a "hold" status until the ACH bank transfer clears after three to five business days, but the coins are already bought at the price that existed when you placed the order.

Another method you might consider is to deposit cash at any Chase location for credit to your BitMe account.

I could get coins quickly with bitinstant, but their fee would be 3.5% or so, which is unacceptable to me.

With Bitcoin's volatility, oftentimes the acquisition costs to obtain coins immediately are much less than the increase in the exchange rate in acquiring coins days later.  Of course, nobody knows when or which direction even the exchange rate will move but for reference, in the last dozen days of both 2010 and 2011 the exchange rate went up significantly more than 3.99%.

There is a blockchain.info phishing site on a .info misspell domain, watch out. I almost fell for it once,

Wow, yes there is.  Omit the c in block,  i.e.,  Blok*

Just an FYI, there are outstanding tasks that can be completed on the micro-consulting service called AskYourUsers.com, and payment is received through Dwolla.  Details here:

Micro-Consulting (paid via Dwolla) - AskYourUsers.com

2549  Economy / Service Announcements / Micro-Consulting (paid via Dwolla) - AskYourUsers.com on: December 26, 2012, 01:17:22 AM
Those wishing to earn some bitcoins might be able to do so through the new task marketplace from AskYourUsers.com.

A "consultant" registers using a LinkedIn account and can either look for outstanding tasks to complete or simply remain available "for hire" to complete tasks when businesses create them at a later time.

A type of task that a business might create would be a survey about a new product line or perhaps data collection or feedback in an area in which the "consultant" is chosen based on background or skillset from the consultant's LinkedIn profile.

I don't know if there exists a restriction about when cashing out that payment must go to your own Dwolla account.   It is possible you can do a bitcoin trade and then do the cash-out withdrawal to the seller's Dwolla account as payment for your bitcoins.  I mention this because Dwolla accounts are for those from the U.S. only, yet anyone in the world can be a "consultant" for this service.  The cash-out can also be made to a PayPal account instead too.

[Edit:

There is a promotion where 1,500 tasks were made available:
 - https://www.askyourusers.com/claim/job/50d3da6b546e994f1d000006   <-- This task is for those from the U.S. only though.

Additionally, this promotion also involves an optional step where if you complete a task (which you are paid for separately), and send a Tweet that you are entered in a drawing for a $100 bonus.  Details here:

[Edit2:

Here's a referral link for anyone who is not yet a Dwolla user.  If you sign up with this link (in 2012) you will receive a $10 credit towards any Dwolla transaction fees that you are charged when using their service.  (Disclosure: With your signup, I will receive the same $10 credit towards fees on my future transactions as well.)

2550  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin taking up 5.6gb on my computer on: December 26, 2012, 12:44:41 AM
That chart says the blockchain is still less than 4gb.

Ya, it is the raw data in the blockchain.  The files include the index (blkindex.dat), which is over 1.4 GB at the moment.
2551  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: LTC Difficulty Manipulation? on: December 26, 2012, 12:36:20 AM
this last one had the network hash rate almost DOUBLING just before difficulty adjustment.

Of course, there is not a way to measure the true amount of actual hashing occurring, so charted are just estimates based on how quickly blocks are being solved.  And thus variance can be high, which is likely what explains that spike before the next adjustment.
2552  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANNOUNCE] btctip.com- send bitcoins with a tweet on: December 25, 2012, 11:53:15 PM
I'm concerned about the privacy implications of notifying when a tip is claimed. It would mean a tipper knows when the person they tipped logged into the site for the first time. This has been the second request for this feature though, so I'll take that into account.

The tip is eventually returned if it is not claimed, so that's one way of knowing.   I don't know how much time lapses before this occurs though ... pretty short (i.e., couple of days) if I remember correctly.
2553  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitinstant moneygram to bitcoin address conversion rate on: December 25, 2012, 11:46:03 PM
We purchase the BTC from MtGox as soon as your deposit gets made.

The price is locked in as soon as moneygram software tells ours that order is completed, so we lock in the best rate

Just to be clear though, there is a variable fee of 3.99% that is subtracted from the amount of the transaction.  So, for instance, entering an amount of $100 will create a quote stating that you will receive $96.01 ($100 - $3.99 fee).

So that amount after the fee is subtracted is what is used to purchase your coins.

Incidentally, there is a BitInstant support thread here in this forum where this question could be asked:

2554  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Lost recieve accounts from wallet on: December 25, 2012, 11:12:31 PM
In the morning I see my Receive address left only 2 from total of 5.

Are you saying that the Balance in the Overview that your Bitcoin-Qt client shows had dropped after you used "Delete" to remove an address(es) from the Address Book?

That "Delete" button only hides those addresses from the address book, it doesn't delete the private key from your wallet.

So it should not have an effect on that balance.

If you are experiencing different behavior, then perhaps could you record the steps that you are finding that causes this to occur?  Of course, make sure you first have a reliable backup of your wallet prior to doing anything that you suspect could cause a loss of funds.

If you were reporting some other behavior, could you try to restate your problem?  I couldn't really follow what "Receive address left only 2 from total of 5." means.
2555  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin taking up 5.6gb on my computer on: December 25, 2012, 09:19:35 PM
I thought the blockchain was supposed to be <4gb. Whats up with that !?

That was several months ago.  It grows quickly because there are thirty to fifty thousand transactions each day and the blocks are stored in raw form (not optimized).

This space issue will be reduced to some degree with Bitcoin v0.8 but more importantly the performance will be much faster such that you feel you need to have the Bitcoin data on your SSD drive.

2556  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: help! prepaid visa to bitcoin? on: December 25, 2012, 02:46:25 PM
i've been trying to figure this out for a while now, it seems there really is no easy way to do this...
any way i can mail in my card and recieve btc? i have little worries about doing this fast, i just want it to work and be easy enough for me to figure out.

There had been an exchange or two that had offered this method in the past, but currently there are none.

Bitcoins can be bought with cash.  A prepaid VISA card can be used at an ATM to obtain cash.

If you still want to try to find a trade, you might post an offer on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace.  Maybe someone there will be interested, at the right price.  Just make sure that if you are going to send the card in the mail that the party you are sending it to has a decent trust history in the #bitcoin-otc Web of Trust (WoT).

2558  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: possible to avoid double spends if accepting unconfirmed transaction? on: December 25, 2012, 02:08:10 PM
thus reducing the risks of a double spend. where basic terms/conditions of satoshi dice/coffee shop are that only transactions from an address with low activity will get accepted for instant use. where by addresses with alot of activity would have to wait for confirmations before the trade/sale/service is completed.

Just to clarify, there's no period of time (e.g., an "hour") that will ensure that a transaction has confirmed.  So this idea of requiring that an hour doesn't guarantee anything.

Also, it appears you are placing significance on this concept of an address having "low activity'.  Bitcoin does not use the concept of "balances".  Bitcoin transactions instead consist of inputs and outputs.  Once an output is spent, there is no further activity for that output, ever.

But you are right to express a concern.  Consider the following scenario:

Let's say SatoshiDICE made payouts using other people's wagers that hadn't yet confirmed.  And then a consumer uses the funds from that SatoshiDICE payout to make a payment at a merchant.  Then let's say those transactions never confirm and somehow further back a double spend occurred and invalidated the wager to SatoshiDICE.    What ended up happening then is that the consumer made a payment to a merchant that will never confirm.

But that is easy to identify.  The merchant needs to do more than just check that the transaction was received but also check that the input(s) for that transaction had at least one confirmation (or perhaps more confirmations, depending on the amount of the transaction / level of risk tolerance).

Accept 0-confirmation tx = trust the payer. If you do not trust the payer, you should wait for confirmations.

In the example above, the customer might have been trustworthy but probably would have been at the time unaware that the funds being used to pay the merchant hadn't been already confirmed.    So in that instance, even though the consumer had no intention to double spend that is indeed what could occur if the consumer too ended up receiving a transaction that eventually became a double spend.

So the litmus test on accepting 0/unconfirmed as payment might need to also include another check to ensure that all inputs for the payment had confirmations.  If that fails, then there is an increase in the risk of that transaction never confirming and the merchant would want to proceed in an appropriate manner.

These type of scenarios will rarely occur accidentally, so simply the prevention could be to ensure that there is no economic gain from attempting them.  A restaurant for instance will make more in profit from repeated failed double spend attempts than it would lose from the occasional one that does occur, for instance.

But a merchant will probably want to use a payment processor that can perform the risk analysis (e.g., to know that if the payment to the merchant came from a SatoshiDICE payout that also hadn't confirmed that it then is a higher-risk payment.)
