Well, I receive the gift card via e-mail.  I have no Square account, I simply hit print.   I go to the restaurant that the card was for.  I eat.  I pay with the gift card (QR code).     I go home and send the bitcoins.

Then let's say the next day the chargeback happens.

Offer to buy a $500 gift card (or multiples of $50 or whatever) at any Square merchant.   Of course, you are taking the risk that the person selling bitcoins to you will cash out the gift card and not send the coins to you so the seller's -otc WoT history rating should be good   (and you need to make sure they are authenticated on -otc otherwise it might be someone impersonating that -otc user.)

This provides a method for a person to buy a gift certificate and pay for it using a credit card.  

The recipient of the gift certificate can then use the funds to make a purchase from the merchant chosen.

Why this is relevant to Bitcoin is because this provides a method for someone to sell bitcoins for a "gift card" through Square where the buyer can pay with a credit card.  Of course to protect from the risk of a chargeback, if the buyer is not trusted the seller will want to spend the gift card received before delivering the bitcoins.

The list of merchants who run Square register (available to anyone using an Android or iPhone on mobile or tablet) is about 250,000 in number:

Many of these are coffee shops, cafes and similar types of small-business merchants, so this won't help really in facilitating $500 trades.  But someone wanting to trade $40 of bitcoins can probably find a place nearby they would dine at for dinner and now have a relatively easy way to cash out their coins.

The recipient of the gift card does not need to have a credit card or bank account associated with the Square account, and does not even need to use Square -- the gift card can be printed and the paper QR code taken to the merchant and used for payment.

This should be a fantastic tool useful for those wishing to do more over-the-counter (OTC) trading.

If you don't value that 0.1 BTC and are willing to give it away, then why should the person who receives it believe this piece of paper from a complete stranger would be something of any value either?

I recently experimented with a couple different approaches for this.

One that I tried just once failed but I plan to try it again with better results.  What I wanted to do was to let the person "do work" to earn the funds.   About the only "work" I could think of was bitZino blackjack or roulette.  After the person plays a few rounds, they get the payout (I'll withdraw it to their paper bitcoin).  

My first attempt at this failed because I didn't have good enough internet connectivity when trying to demonstrate it.   (My next try I might use http://KingCo.in instead for the form of "work" with someone at random as there is no need for that person to know how to play blackjack and KingCoin's game is more visually entertaining.)

Can the card be used at an ATM?

Cash works for buying bitcoins.

Do you have a Chase location nearby?   Bitcoins can be purchased at BitMe with cash deposited at Chase.   There isn't always liquidity so buying in the $500 range there might take a bit for sellers to take you up on your buy order.  (or you can always buy at the current price for the sell orders, but that is about 5% over the spot price).

You can also buy bitcoins using cash through BitInstant.

Additionally, there are frequently individual traders on #bitcoin-otc who are willing to accept a prepaid card and after spending the funds successfully will send you the coins for the agreed-upon purchase price.  Using the history from the Web of Trust (WoT) helps to ensure a safer transaction -- or perhaps asking the seller to agree to using an escrow is another way to lessen the chance that you would be cheated.

I had cashed out through CoinBase as well and the funds for the 4:52 pm PST sale were in my bank account about 36 hours later.

If the exchange rate goes up much more that would make it harder on BitFloor.  It is like taking out a  BTC loan and then having to repay from dollar-based income.

BitcoinWireless has not yet launched either.  That least BTCBuy as the sole remaining source.  Each month I refill my mobile phone service (currently Virgin Wireless prepaid, previously T-Mobile prepaid) and use either CellCoin or BTCBuy and have had great experiences with both.

For that size of traction the best cash-out method might be to simply trade at MTGox's btc/GBP market and then do an international bank wire.  

You could break it up into multiple trades at various exchanges and perhaps come out a little better.  They are often individuals buying for cash through LocalBItcoins.

Or the bitcoin-otc marketplace also might help you find buyers.
