I figured I'd ask you what would help bitcoin to get closer to let's say, your grandpa or dad
Does grandpa or dad play poker? (And not that Zynga poker crap, real money poker!) http://SealsWithClubs.eu Would the lady of the house frown on purchases made for some hobby? Purchases made with bitcoin don't show up on the credit card bill: - http://shamblindistribution.com/bitcoin-specials.htmlWhen the grandson is away at college or traveling and needs cash fast, is Dad or Grandpa going to figure out how to send a Western Union, or will the grandson set up a deposit through BitMe.com and send instructions to head to Chase and deposit $NNN.NN into acount NNNNNNN. Then let's say the grandson only spent half the bitcoins received, and about six months later was able to repay the full amount of the loan (in dollars) based on the higher exchange rate. Will Dad and Grandpa suddenly become very interested?

No chargebacks ? 100% sure ?
Well, I receive the gift card via e-mail. I have no Square account, I simply hit print. I go to the restaurant that the card was for. I eat. I pay with the gift card (QR code). I go home and send the bitcoins. Then let's say the next day the chargeback happens. What do I care?

Hello, I recently received a 500$ prepaid visa giftcard from a friend at work.
Boom! Here you go. This provides a method for a person to buy a gift certificate and pay for it using a credit card. The recipient of the gift certificate can then use the funds to make a purchase from the merchant chosen. Essentially one way this is used is as an account-to-account (A2A) transfer: - http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/A2A_Transfer_MethodsWhy this is relevant to Bitcoin is because this technically provides a method for someone to sell bitcoins for a "gift card" through Square where the buyer can pay with a credit card. So get set up on #bitcoin-OTC. Offer to buy a $500 gift card (or multiples of $50 or whatever) at any Square merchant. Of course, you are taking the risk that the person selling bitcoins to you will cash out the gift card and not send the coins to you so the seller's -otc WoT history rating should be good (and you need to make sure they are authenticated on -otc otherwise it might be someone impersonating that -otc user.)

Square introduced "gift cards" (gift certificates) as a feature in their Square Wallet app: - https://squareup.com/wallet#gift-cards - http://vimeo.com/53634501 - https://squareup.com/help/en-us/article/5080-sending-and-redeeming-gift-cardsThis provides a method for a person to buy a gift certificate and pay for it using a credit card. The recipient of the gift certificate can then use the funds to make a purchase from the merchant chosen. Essentially one way this is used is as an account-to-account (A2A) transfer: - http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/A2A_Transfer_MethodsWhy this is relevant to Bitcoin is because this provides a method for someone to sell bitcoins for a "gift card" through Square where the buyer can pay with a credit card. Of course to protect from the risk of a chargeback, if the buyer is not trusted the seller will want to spend the gift card received before delivering the bitcoins. The list of merchants who run Square register (available to anyone using an Android or iPhone on mobile or tablet) is about 250,000 in number: [Edit - here's the directory: - http://squareup.com/directory ] Many of these are coffee shops, cafes and similar types of small-business merchants, so this won't help really in facilitating $500 trades. But someone wanting to trade $40 of bitcoins can probably find a place nearby they would dine at for dinner and now have a relatively easy way to cash out their coins. The recipient of the gift card does not need to have a credit card or bank account associated with the Square account, and does not even need to use Square -- the gift card can be printed and the paper QR code taken to the merchant and used for payment. This should be a fantastic tool useful for those wishing to do more over-the-counter (OTC) trading.

They will be issued as PGP signed serial numbered documents using a single use PGP key that will be locked in a safe afterwards, thus preventing any possibility of forgeries. What is a single-use PGP key?

I've been thinking about just giving people bitcoins but I've been held back by the thought that I'm wasting my money. This way, if the bill doesn't get spent by dec 31st 2013, I'll sweep all that's left back to my wallet print new ones and hand them out again. Great, great tip! Bitcoin Faucet offline, IRL If you don't value that 0.1 BTC and are willing to give it away, then why should the person who receives it believe this piece of paper from a complete stranger would be something of any value either? I recently experimented with a couple different approaches for this. One that I tried just once failed but I plan to try it again with better results. What I wanted to do was to let the person "do work" to earn the funds. About the only "work" I could think of was bitZino blackjack or roulette. After the person plays a few rounds, they get the payout (I'll withdraw it to their paper bitcoin). My first attempt at this failed because I didn't have good enough internet connectivity when trying to demonstrate it. (My next try I might use http://KingCo.in instead for the form of "work" with someone at random as there is no need for that person to know how to play blackjack and KingCoin's game is more visually entertaining.)

If I was serious about mining now I would buy all FPGA's I could get my hands on, as they are priced favourable now MH/$ vise. That would still be a gamble that asic's will not take over (either because of delays or a smaller market than people think).
You probably aren't following this thread then: If the foundry keeps up 4 layers a week from now on, it means ASICMINEr should receive the chips just before Christmas, so we could theoretically (hopefully) have something online before the end of the year....hashing the first ASIC mined block ever
then following that: (~2-3 weeks) First 6TH/s online (~2-3 weeks) Second 6TH/s online (~0-4 weeks) 50TH/s of chips out (~2-3 weeks, ~2-5 weeks if location changes) Part or all of the 50TH/s online

Ran "bitcoin-qt -salvagewallet -rescan", but I get "Cannot initialize keypool" error message. Tried several times. Found no helpful information by googling it...
I doubt that those two are meant to be used simultaneously. Try just -salvagewallet

StephenGornick - what is the unavailable method you alluded to?
The one I was referring to as being "unavailable" is the cash-out service that mjb monetary metals was providing: They now are providing cash out service, but only through OKPay.

Guys you just don't send your exchange order to anyone who have advertised online. Be careful and use reliable and recommended exchange services like http://Http://swapmybuck.comGuys you just don't send your exchange order to anyone who have advertised online. Be careful and use reliable and recommended exchange services like http://Http://swapmybuck.comfreddy8 your recommendation in your previous post is no longer in business. This swapmybuck one had its domain registered just a couple weeks ago. When exchanging non-reversible payments like Liberty Reserve or other digital currencies like Perfect Money, one needs to have good reason to trust the counterparty. Sometimes buyer or seller can be found through the #Bitcoin-otc marketplace, and the -otc Web of Trust (WoT) is useful to see the counterparty's trust history: - http://bitcoin-otc.com/ - http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#bitcoin-otc-foyer - http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewratings.php

I recently received a 500$ prepaid visa giftcard from a friend at work Where do you find friends like that? my visa is only good in the U.S. Is it even possible to buy bitcoins with a Visa Prepaid giftcard?
Can the card be used at an ATM? Cash works for buying bitcoins. Do you have a Chase location nearby? Bitcoins can be purchased at BitMe with cash deposited at Chase. There isn't always liquidity so buying in the $500 range there might take a bit for sellers to take you up on your buy order. (or you can always buy at the current price for the sell orders, but that is about 5% over the spot price). You can also buy bitcoins using cash through BitInstant. - http://www.BitInstant.comThere is a service that accepts credit and debit cards, I don't know if they have restrictions against prepaid cards. At the moment the site reads: "Availability: Out Of Stock" though. - http://btcquick.comOr you might find a local trade (paying cash): - http://www.localbitcoins.comAdditionally, there are frequently individual traders on #bitcoin-otc who are willing to accept a prepaid card and after spending the funds successfully will send you the coins for the agreed-upon purchase price. Using the history from the Web of Trust (WoT) helps to ensure a safer transaction -- or perhaps asking the seller to agree to using an escrow is another way to lessen the chance that you would be cheated. - http://bitcoin-otc.com/ - http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#bitcoin-otc-foyer - http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewratings.phpOr if you are considering a bank transfer, there all kinds of options are available: - http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Buying_bitcoins

We just added 30 Bitcoin Key's to our stock. Get them while they last!
The product page for each shows out of stock at the present time. Is the site always accurate, or any ETA?

I tried to withdraw my BTC but they got frozen by bitmarket.eu for no reason (they are normally frozen when you initiate a sell transaction which I didn't, I just tried to withdraw). FYI, another related thread: - http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=129803.0

I had an easy setup with two-factor authentication and while the message when I have sold Bitcoins has told me to expect the ACH to go through in five business days, it actually went through in two.
I had cashed out through CoinBase as well and the funds for the 4:52 pm PST sale were in my bank account about 36 hours later.

I received a little over 1.7% of my held balance back.
If the exchange rate goes up much more that would make it harder on BitFloor. It is like taking out a BTC loan and then having to repay from dollar-based income.

We at Tangible Cryptography LLC have decided to close CellCoin.
That's unfortunate. BitcoinWireless has not yet launched either. That least BTCBuy as the sole remaining source. Each month I refill my mobile phone service (currently Virgin Wireless prepaid, previously T-Mobile prepaid) and use either CellCoin or BTCBuy and have had great experiences with both. - http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade#Mobile_Phone_Refill_Codes

i have nearly 200 coins that i need to convert into gbp
where is the best place to do so quickly and with the least charges
For that size of traction the best cash-out method might be to simply trade at MTGox's btc/GBP market and then do an international bank wire. You could break it up into multiple trades at various exchanges and perhaps come out a little better. They are often individuals buying for cash through LocalBItcoins. Or the bitcoin-otc marketplace also might help you find buyers. Here is a thread from someone looking to buy a smaller quantity. - http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=121303.20

If you live in Czech Republic- how do you cash bitcoins, are there any companies which facilitate this? ta for replies etc..... You might ask buybtc.cz, maybe they might be looking for a local source or perhaps might know of a local trade option for you. There might already be someone listing an offer near you. There are many listings in which you will find a buyer paying with CZK. - https://localbitcoins.com/country/cz
