3061  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase Blog - Buy And Sell Bitcoin By Connecting Any U.S. Bank Account on: November 21, 2012, 05:52:47 PM
Coinbase appears to be offline within the last hour or so.

The main page is still responding, but when attempting to login is when I see the error.

This reminds me ...

Feature request: Show the exchange rate that I would pay to buy through Coinbase (and the exchange rate I would receive when selling through Coinbase) without having to login.

I check a few sources before I buy or sell and not having to login to see the rate offered would save a few seconds.  I'm sure I'm not the only one that does this.
3062  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Currency Fair (currencyfair.com) - P2P currency exchange - Good for Aussies! on: November 21, 2012, 07:13:29 AM
I believe Mt. Gox also requires that that name on the account where the funds are sent from be in your name.  So sending from Currency Fair to Mt. Gox wouldn't be successful, as far as I know, since the funds would be coming from CurrencyFair, and not your account.   Perhaps Mt. Gox is inconsistent in how this restriction is applied?

Never knew about this one.  I have done 3 transfers to Mt.Gox from Currency Fair, not a problem so far.  Haven't tried the other way, so may be something to look out for.  Thanks for the info.

When I choose Bank Transfer funding method, the details show:

Quote
Funds deposited with Mt.Gox must come from the bank account with the name that matches the owner of the Mt.Gox account.

Now if you have an unverified account, then they wouldn't know which name the bank transfer needs to correspond to so I suppose that is one exception where the restriction might not be enforced:

How do I get started?  How do I requesting Funding Instructions?

Send an encrypted GPG message to info@tangiblecryptography.com with:
a) An export of your GPG public key which contains your email address* or a link to it on a keyserver (first time only)
b) Your 8 digit GPG KEYID (use the KEYID for the main key not any subkeys (i.e. our company's KEYID is C26C17CD).

Does that need to be signed as well, or just encrypted?
3064  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Difficulty decreasing? on: November 21, 2012, 04:33:45 AM
They're not in it to help the BTC economy, because they they think Cryptocurrency is the wave of the future

Which means those miners don't hold many unsold coins

there's going to be a lot more supply than demand as GPU miners liquidate their final BTC pools

Which they normally sell anyway, so that isn't an upward change in the quantity of coins headed to market for sale.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if you see the BTC/$ price go half or lower where it is.

There would have to be something major to happen to see a drop anywhere near that.  GPU miners being unable to compete and powering down doesn't really impact the exchange rate either way, from what I can tell.
3065  Other / Off-topic / Re: Block Reward Halving + BFL Equipment = What for Mining / Price In Your Opinion? on: November 21, 2012, 04:20:01 AM
What is the "N Ghash/s for sale" though?  Are you referring to mining contracts?

No, just that instead of parting out systems entire rigs are sold, in quantity ("everything must go").  So to make it easier, the title for the seller's listing simply refers to the Ghash/s capacity rather than describing the components (e.g., 3X5970).

Here's an example:

What came first was that this is a set of rigs with 2.4 Ghash/s capacity,
and secondary was that the 2.4 Ghash is coming from eight 5830s.

I'm always kind of curious about why people use credit cards to pay their monthly bills if they object to the way the processing system is set up.  Is there no simple way of paying your bills by direct deposit in the US

Some merchants want the customer to sign up for EFT / bank transfer.  But that is a pull-based system.  So when using that the customer gives the merchant permission to pull funds from the customer's bank account.  Of course, this is convenient but it hands all the control over to the merchant.   This is a problem particularly with subscription-based services or utilities whose business model depends on making it difficult for the customer to stop service (take your pick -- cell phone service, cable, gym membership, etc.).

There's ones that require a credit card number where they have automation and issue a charge against the card each month.  But at least with that I can put a stop to further charges by draining the available funds from the card (to prevent a successful authorization attempt) or if needed, canceling the card.

je préférais un site avec moneybooker

At VirWoX you are able to purchase Second Life Lindens (SLLs) using MoneyBookers/Skrill and then from there you can trade SLLs for BTCs.

There are other methods that may work as well ... like sending cash (EUR) to Bitcoin Nordic.

Or you might find UKash at a nearby convenience store and purchase bitcoins using those funds through VirWoX, Mercabit.eu, and Bitcoin Nordic.

Additionally, you might find someone locally willing to trade, using Local Bitcoins:

3069  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Easywallet.org - web based wallet, iPhone/Android clients with QR Codes on: November 20, 2012, 10:23:46 PM
Now you can sweep the transactions from any private key to your easywallet.org wallet, easily with QR code scanning. This is very fast especially with the one-tap feature.

Wow!  That is pretty much exactly what I was looking for!  It was literally eight seconds from accessing EasyWallet.org until the funds on my paper wallet were redeemed.

The transaction will incur a transaction fee of 0.001, and it appears the service requires a minimum of unspent inputs for the address to total at least 0.01 BTC.  Those are all reasonable restrictions.

There's one specific detail though that I'm unsure about.  It appears that only unspent inputs that have confirmations are considered?

i.e., if a merchant gives me a paper bitcoin (e.g., as change for a purchase I made where I paid using a paper bitcoin with a fixed amount of bitcoins on it), and the transaction from the merchant to fund that paper bitcoin hasn't yet confirmed, I then need to wait until it confirms before I can redeem it with EasyWallet.

If that is how it works, then that kind of renders it unusable [edit: less than perfect] for one of the use cases I had in mind for this.   Since EasyWallet won't give me access to the funds until they confirm anyway, what is the harm in redeeming the private key even if the unspent inputs have no confirmations yet?

When I get a paper bitcoin from someone else, I want to have the spend transaction broadcast immediately so that there is no temptation for the merchant to double spend on me (by redeeming another copy of it) after I walk out the door.

Could this decision on requiring confirmations be reconsidered?

Currently aware of an issue affecting one server. Rebooting now.

Edit: Resolved

Problems yet?

My wallet isn't showing any funds or any transactions.  It looks like a new, empty wallet.

Oh, still shows "disconnected".

[Update: Ok, that was user error.

The wallet shows 0 balance because I had "archived" the couple of addresses that still had funds in them.

Feature request: Would it be possible for me to remove the filter in My Transactions which only shows transactions for addresses that I haven't archived?  The pull-down says "All" but that apparently means "All that aren't archived".]
3071  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Currency Fair (currencyfair.com) - P2P currency exchange - Good for Aussies! on: November 20, 2012, 11:01:10 AM
So check out CurrencyFair.com as an alternative way in getting money to Mt.Gox.  Obviously this would work the same way in reverse if you would like to sell bitcoins (I have yet to try that Cheesy).  You will need to send them ID to get your account verified.

When sending funds to your CurrencyFair account, the sending account must be an account in your name.  After you've converted the funds then you can send them as a bank wire to any bank account.

But you won't be able to send your Mt. Gox funds to Currency Fair for the reason I described above .. the funds must be sent from an account in your name.

If there are exceptions, this would be good to know because there is a log of arbitrage I've passed up because I had the belief that I couldn't send from CurrencyFair to Mt. Gox and vice-versa.

Now for over-the-counter trading there would be no restriction on you transferring your Currency Fair funds to the bitcoin seller in another currency jurisdiction.
3072  Other / Off-topic / Re: Press google to count in BTC on: November 20, 2012, 07:17:38 AM
Take the weighted value from bitcoincharts obviously.

No, its not obvious.  These  "official" numbers would be used for things like forex settlement, tax computations, etc.  So you don't want something like Crypto x Change's numbers over the past few days appearing skewing the exchange rate used for these purposes.

There's no "fixing" if the rates printed are flawed, so the official source needs follow a formal specification as to how these official rates are computed and what to do when a change, like what happened today with Crypto X Change occurs.

But since there's no "central bank", this will probably need to come from some financial data provider that performs QA on the data so if there are problems, the stream is halted versus flawed quotes being printed.    Merchants might pay for access to this data feed for use in setting prices on their ecommerce systems.
3073  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Difficulty decreasing? on: November 20, 2012, 07:06:35 AM
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Why does everyone think halving will cause the price to go up?

There's a difference between in going up and it doubling.

There are some who mine specifically to acquire coins to make purchases.   If the proceeds of mining bring in less than the electric bill, then to obtain those coins needed to continue making purchases there is increased demand at the markets.  Nobody knows how much of mining is for this purpose.

And the supply of new coins will definitely be dropping by half.

So these factors normally put upward pressure on the exchange rate.

On the flipside, there have been a lot of speculators, miners and others holding onto coins waiting for the big payoff.  With there being less than 10 days to the halving and no steady rise (last weeks bump can mostly be attributed to the WordPress announcement) it could be that $12 is all we see.

From my casual observations though, I think there are a lot more people who would buy here but are playing chicken ... waiting until the last minute to commit, hoping the exchange rate drops again giving a lower entry point.  But even if there is a spike up as panic buying sets in, there are still plenty will be thrilled to cash out at $14, $15, if it gets there.  So it looks really unlikely halving will result in a doubling of the exchange rate.  But a 20% rise from $11.75 in the days leading up to the having?   Sure, it could happen.
3074  Economy / Gambling / Re: A delightfully simple spin-the-wheel game (that's provably fair) on: November 20, 2012, 02:42:04 AM
This is with Chrome browser on Android.  This occurs the same under both a mobile device as well as with a tablet (Nexus 7)

Right now the site is a black hole when using my Android mobile (with Chrome).   The press on the spin button does do a spin and then the spin button reappears.  But the second press causes the button to disappear but no spin occurs.  There is no recovery as far as I could tell.  This occurs when playing for free as well as if I've signed in and have placed an actual wager (and thus the black hole, you will lose your wager).    Something should be done to either disable the game when on a mobile or the game should function on a mobile as well.

My mobile (LG Optimus Elite) is running Android v2.3.7.   Incidentally, this same behavior does not occur on a tablet (Nexus 7) running Android v4.2.

3075  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: November 20, 2012, 02:23:33 AM
The API page mentions the "Unspent outpus" API method, but the implementation differs from the online documentation.

Quote
Unspent outputs
http://blockchain.info/unspent/?address=$hash_160&address=$hash_160
Multiple Addresses Allowed

But it appears it is only responding properly when using $bitcoin_address not $hash_160,

Also, the example shows a trailing slash in the URL path.  There should be no trailing slash.  e.g.,   /unspent?address=   instead of  /unspent/?address=

3076  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: FastCash4Bitcoins Support Thread (over 125,000 Bitcoins purchased) on: November 20, 2012, 02:15:44 AM
If a third party could provide the index lookup to give the unspent txid's from a bitcoin address, then the transaction could be composed locally.

Like this?

3077  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Db::open: Invalid argument bitcoin in Runaway exception on: November 19, 2012, 11:08:23 PM
When running options is it just a case of right clicking the shortcut in win7 and changing the excute line to add -detachdb at the end? Ive tried that with no results.

You can run using the command line first.  You don't need to run -detachdb more than once so run it from the command prompt.

Ive confused myself here by placing the bitcoin directory into a truecrypt mount thinking that was the directory

You can start the client with the -datadir=
e.g.,
  bitcoin-qt -detachdb -datadir="D:\btcencrypted"

I have the debug.log is it safe to publish it? Im not very technical savey.

It doesn't reveal any private keys.  It does reveal IP addresses, etc., so if that's sensitive, try to just copy the couple lines relevant to the error.

3078  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Where can I exchange UKash for Bitcoin? on: November 19, 2012, 09:14:12 PM
I normally use Mercabit, who are extremely reliable, but Alex is away until the 30th so I need a temporary vendor.

UKash vouchers may be redeemed with merchants where this payment voucher is accepted. This includes Bitcoin exchanges Mercabit.eu and VirWoX.
Funds may be added to a CashU account using a UKash voucher. Some bitcoin exchanges, such as Bitcoin Nordic, accept CashU payments for the purchase of bitcoins.

...As is usual in efforts of this type, FinCEN’s efforts to expand the definition of cash will only inconvenience law-abiding travelers. A real criminal – or anyone seeking financial privacy – will use the “brainwallet” concept to silently move value across increasingly irrelevant national frontiers. (A brainwallet requires that you memorize a unique passphrase to gain access to an online store of value, such as Bitcoin.)...

More "security theater".   The problem was funds was being taken across the borders and, legally, not being reported.  In an attempt to "do something", regulations that are easily circumvented are imposed:

Quote
According to a comment from the Network Branded Prepaid Card Association, "a card can truthfully be reported as having just $1,000 on it; and then two hours later, the card can be loaded with funds from another location and have $15,000 on it."

Does it make it look like something is being done at the border points?  Sure.   But it is the equivalent of this:
