781  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: A uni-student from Romania is claiming to have 107 ASIC units for sale at 85 GHs on: February 05, 2013, 05:54:59 PM
They never explain why they are selling books instead of making millions themselves.

And then you find out that their secret to making millions is actually just selling a book...about making millions... Tongue
782  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon chip on: February 05, 2013, 05:53:19 PM
Precisely. The way I've been looking at it, the absolutely minimum for first gen will probably be around 250-300TH/s (tripling BFL's preorder count, adding Avalon's batch #1 and #2, and tossing in ASICMiner as well). It'll only go up from there once people see working devices, as well as Gen 2 speculation.

My old estimate was based on dollars per hash/second.  ASICs provide roughly 25-35 times the hashrate per dollar cost, ignoring operational costs.  Thus, my short-medium term projection was about 75 million difficulty.  As the fixed costs of ASIC production dwindle and devices start being sold closer to their marginal costs, I expect another doubling, to around 150 million difficulty.

That's a pretty fair way to estimate it, and I tried thinking about it that way at one point as well..mainly since the majority of miners are in it for the money more so than the security it brings to the network. I found that, at least for GPUs, price and difficulty seemed to correlate to around an 8-10 month payoff...the point in which the $300 GPU (or any price really) finally pays for itself and you can make a return. So long as a miner was able to eventually turn a profit, they continued to mine.

That's also probably part of the reason we're seeing an increase in difficulty now...since the price is above $20, many smaller miners are able to cover energy costs and profit once more.

EDIT: I can't seem to find my stats on this stuff. I'll have to check again when I'm home from work.
783  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon chip on: February 05, 2013, 04:18:43 PM
I agree as well, I have been doing some calculations on difficulty and I have a calendar with estimates to see if it is staying on the curve I believe we are heading on.   The next month will be crucial to give us the pace for the next 6 months.

The shape of the curve depends on how aggressive both companies can be in moving units.  For Avalon how quickly will all batch 2 customers get their units, will there be a delay on batch3, etc.  For BFL can they get out the door in Feb and once they do how many units per week can they sustain in production.  The end state is much higher difficulty it really just depends on how steep the curve is.

If this person really used their own funds and developed this, they would have zero incentive to not be mining with them right now. They have no customers and no obligation not to.

Haha exactly!

I had a good laugh when I saw this...usually scammers actually try to play out their scam. His was a terrible, terrible attempt. Tongue
785  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon chip on: February 05, 2013, 03:04:29 PM
That pic was showing a meter at almost 600w... that's a bit higher than anticipated.  Can someone translate the explanation of that pic?  Is that 600w at 66GH/s?

Yeah, 600w for 66GH/s ..only 33% higher than they advertise on their site.

EDIT: I stand corrected, it looks like they finally changed the specs on their site.
786  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: February 05, 2013, 03:02:05 PM
So how many people pre-ordered a batch #2 and probably loses their money?
It's not a scam. The fact that 2 or 3 exist is proof enough [...]

Nice! So if I create a working ASIC for myself and "promise" I'll make more to sell, you'll give me all your money?
787  Economy / Securities / Re: Trading virtual shares (colored coins) on: February 05, 2013, 01:55:20 PM
Yes, I will update the project websites and so on with more detailed information as it grows, just wanted to get started now, my fingers are itching and I think some developers and investors could be interested in the concept - besides it's a collaborative project so you are more than welcome to contribute by editing the GitHub project wiki yourself for instance.

Whats the point of building an exchange for something specifically designed to avoid exchanges ?

I'm not building an exchange, just a website which lists a couple of color ID's that you need if you want to buy or sell the specific virtual assets I've issued.

Umm...how is this not an exchange?
788  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [EDU] How to spot a scammer (Read this before lending your coins!) on: February 05, 2013, 01:53:35 PM
Wow all you do speculate about ppl scamming on this post...
Wtf lol

Welcome to Bitcoin.

Unfortunately, most of the speculations noted above are pretty true to form. Watch yourself out there Wink
789  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: February 05, 2013, 01:36:35 AM
They're the only ones that have delivered more than just promises.

Very true.

Oh yeah, where are those other 298 units? I forgot they've shipped 100 units by now...since they're so true to their word and all  Roll Eyes
790  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: ASIC and beyond on: February 04, 2013, 11:49:32 PM
I am banking on Quantum computing and investing in something that might become public int he next 18 months </serious>

As amazing as Quantum computing is (and will be), I'm wary about implementing it for Bitcoin. It would be thousands (more than likely millions) of times faster than an high spec'd ASIC...so any one device kicked on before another would more than likely take control over the network (>50%).
791  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: February 04, 2013, 09:36:21 PM
Probably just them being unpro

Definitely. Just took a quick look and they probably haven't updated their certificates yet, which isn't usually too much of a problem if they're attentive to it. Pagoda Box is just a cloud hosting site, so they're probably hosting with them while utilizing their certs.

* puts on tinfoil hat

Or they stole the certs to try and give a false sense of security during checkout.

* takes off tinfoil hat
792  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What if your Avalon breaks? on: February 04, 2013, 05:12:45 PM
So, what do you do, after (hopefully) receiving your Avalon unit, it (suddenly) stops working (properly)?

Easy. Buy replacement parts or buy another Avalon.

It's not like Avalon offers a warranty on their "no refund" devices Wink
793  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: February 04, 2013, 05:08:41 PM
If 2 made it through customs so fast I wonder whats holding up the others.

Well, I suppose they'd have to ship the others first Tongue

It took 10-11 days for the first ASICs to reach Jeff and the Foundation, so there should probably be 50-75 devices reaching their owners this week...assuming Avalon is indeed true to their word and not just jerking us around to increase Batch #2 orders.
794  Economy / Speculation / Re: Review of S.DICE on: February 03, 2013, 03:35:27 PM
They don't offer anything special that another competitor cannot easily replicate.

You're thinking about coding and layout. What you're not thinking about is the value of a Brand, which is generally what drives the value of a company. One million people could create one million gambling sites, but there will always be the original "SatoshiDice".
795  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: New Drama from BitcoinASIC on: February 02, 2013, 05:37:51 PM
Great lords of thunder!  What!??? I thought they were NOT going to ask for any pre-orders till a YouTube video of a hashig rig was released.

The Bitcoin Foundation already released a video of their Avalon hashing away...
796  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: February 01, 2013, 09:36:26 PM
When are the rest of the Batch #1 customers going to receive their units?

[trolling]

After they finish selling out their Batch #2 preorders to fund the finishing of Batch #1 Cheesy

[/trolling]
797  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: February 01, 2013, 09:34:54 PM
supposedly it's a trivial optical shrink from 110nm to 55nm (trivial technically. financially...harder).

I've heard exactly the same, so I think you might be right as well. 110 to 55 is just a more expensive process thanks to the shrinkage...just like ASICMiner could probably go from 130nm to BFL's 65nm with a bit more cash.
798  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: New Drama from BitcoinASIC on: February 01, 2013, 09:31:32 PM
I think you're knit picking nitpicking.

Oh most definitely  Cheesy

If they had profits and outside investments, why exactly did they need to take full payment pre-orders?  if they didnt need customer money why not take a small deposit to hold the clients place, this is what normal real world companies do?

Meh, why not? As a small company, it's vastly easier to have everyone pay in full right from the start. When the time comes to build, package, and ship, it's nice to know that you have X amount of customers that have already paid, compared to X [fully paid], Y [partially paid], and/or even Z [not paid]. It negates the "Oh wait, did this person pay the rest of their bill before I ship?" type of mentality.
799  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: I see no sudden increase in total network hashrate. on: February 01, 2013, 08:35:58 PM
Weird. When it spiked up to 30TH/s for like 12 hours, I assumed it was more than just variation, and actually ASICs online. Now we're looking at 25THs, almost exactly where we were before.

It does seem to have been variation (at least for now). I'm sure others have started up their GPU mining once more (as I did) since it's marginally profitable (again, at least for now). I think it'll be pretty obvious once there are a fair number of ASICs in the wild, and I'm fully expecting to see a stable 30+ TH/s over the next few weeks.

Another reason not to order the extra modules is the power supply. I doubt the stock 3 module unit is going to ship with a power supply that can support 6 modules.

In fact, if you look at the bitcoin foundation pictures, there is a different PSU in the 4 module box that jeff has in his 3 module box. the bitcoin foundation PSU looks like an enermax while jeff's is an antec.

What if Avalon release a 55nm chip revision with the same board layout? It'd be interesting to hear how much wattage headroom the 3x20 GH/s have with their stock PSU, people that don't upgrade their 110nm boards early on might be able to use the space more efficiently if Avalon can stick with their module dimensions through their chip upgrades.

I'm actually quite curious about this as well. It would be very cool if they were able to maintain the current board layout while packing more chips on each module at 55nm..not to mention the power efficiency increase.
