You can be a volunteer too like the people who ran instawalllet as a free service. ...unless there is reason those 'haters' are correct. Lots of MtGox people used similar arguments when people challenged their solvency.
Mtgox customers are victims, not haters. The haters are not victims because they got their money back yet continue to spread FUD. Did Phinn ever get his 1000 BTC returned?
Ask him. I do not know about any valid claim of such amount. It sounds insane to store so much on an instawallet. If there was ever a valid claim from this person, it would have been paid back. |

Let's not forget about all trojan hijacked PC's where their CPUs/GPUs are used to mine bitcoin. That would not be possible with PoS.
PoS networks can be launched at will without any barrier to entry so PoS coins are in unlimited quantities, therefore worthless. PoW mining geographic distribution can be fractionally seasonal so its actually reducing energy consumption for heating, to some extend. |

Oops, remember the attacker is a super tycoon with more than 180 million USD, he can start by spending, say, 100 million to purchase mining machines and become an individual who owns the most hashing power in the world.
Anyone who has followed bitcoin news for some time knows that ordering mining gear and receiving delivery of mining gear do not happen the same day, to put it midly. Performance is another variable. So your tycoon is spending 100 million on mining gear (and on the facility to host the machines) but he has no idea if and when he will own the most hashing power. |

For newbies, I'd recommend electrum as an SPV client. Once you become familiar with bitcoin, you would want to be a full node and take the time to download the whole blockchain with bitcoin-qt and strong password for wallet encryption. Avoid windows. Electrum is easy to use but it needs centralized servers. It is not a pure P2P client. Bitcoin-Qt is pure P2P. Multibit is pure P2P. SPV is specified in Satoshi's original paper for thin clients; A thin client (multibit or electrum) is NOT P2P because it needs full nodes to function. Anybody can run a full node electrum server. There is no "central" electrum server: you can chose the one you want to connect to. |

I can purchase a new fridge and stove at $1100 in about 20 seconds with my plastic cash. I could also lay down 11 $100 bills in the same amount of time. As a merchant I'd not let anyone walk out of the store without seeing the full confirmations and in this regard, BTC fails. The transaction times make it completely useless as a currency. You *could* sell your new fridge, stove, car, etc. and let the person leave after 2 confirmations but realistically, would you? Really?
If the shopkeeper waits for 10 seconds after receiving your payment transaction message to see if a double-spend tx shows up, what are the odds that a double-spend transaction win the race to the blockchain? Zero unless the fraudster controls a mining power so significant that the cost of the attack far exceeds the cost of the fridge. |

Comment tu te protèges d'une attaque DoS dans un réseau (comme le futur Ethereum) qui accepte des contrats en mode Turing-complete ?
Avant de faire la promo d'un altcoin ici ou ailleurs, il serait bon d'avoir un écosystème bitcoin fonctionnel et une bonne compréhension des enjeux ou améliorations éventuelles.
Méfions nous d'une solution (Ethereum) en quête d'un problème.

Je ne peux que recommander aux newbies de comprendre à fond le fonctionnement de bitcoin (pourquoi il est conçu comme il est dans les moindres détails) avant d'investir dans un altcoin. Par exemple, comprendre que si l'intervalle de temps entre deux blocs est raccourci, ça favorise l'émergence d'un pool dominant. La simple possibilité d'une prise de contrôle du réseau Litecoin par un pool signifierait la mort de Litecoin. De plus, le hashing power de bitcoin, donc sa sécurité, est pratiquement impossible à répliquer par un altcoin (même si c'était théoriquement possible). |
