I have been tracking IOTA for some time now, but I never actually invested in it. I was held back by the poor wallet, issue of users not getting their IOTA's and general implementation.... However, now there is that Q announcement. I don't know if that will solve problems, but I am still very interested.
What do you think would be the right time for investment?

Q will likely have little to do with wallets. Trinity and a few more wallets are being released that will address usability--Trinity should be in BETA testing in a few weeks, don't know the time frame for the other wallets.

Does anyone know how many people in total are on board with IOTA?

Here's the early Foundation list (42 listed): http://untangled.world/iota-founders/

I think 12-18 have been announced since then, many I've listed in this thread. I think there's bit more, but many are working as freelancers or on their own projects or haven't been formally made Foundation members.

Prior to Samsung, he initiated and led Security Engineering team for MediaTek IOT business unit and led security design of next generation chipsets. Madjid has been involved in IOT standards since 2011 and has over 15 years of experience in security architecture and standards, chairing and authoring for many industry standards activities in IOT, IPTV/DRM, Internet mobility, and wireless connectivity, and smart cards and has authored and delivered many widely used standards. He is the author of book “AAA and security for Mobile Networks”, many conference papers, 18 issued patents and 20+ pending.

Madjid is an expert in public key infrastructure and factory and field provisioning of identities credentials and personalization of devices and has spent years in the area of device and user authentication and related key management schemes for both mobile Internet connectivity and service authorization. He was one of pioneers in the area of heterogeneous seamless network mobility and the IETF work on the overlap of mobility and security that was the basis for cellular-WiFi interoperability in mid-2000s.

365  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: IOTA-DCI email leaks debunk reports of IOTA flaws. on: March 20, 2018, 06:31:47 PM
So they didn't roll their own crypto? If that part isn't debunked then whatever that report says really doesn't matter as far as I am concerned. That accompanied with creating your own seed is literally the dumbest thing I have heard since entering here.

AFAIK there is no hash for ternary, so you would have to roll your own crypto, so that isn't a valid criticism in and of itself. Now if you want to criticize them for not getting an outside group (they have highly qualified mathematicians and access to a super computer) to vet it, that's a valid criticism--though we'll see how valid when cybercrypt finishes their research. Though as an investor, I was only interested in how they took the threat seriously (they removed it) despite not getting the data they wanted from DCI.

As for making your own seed, Bitcoin didn't have a seed generator in early wallets, so why did they get a pass when their goal was P2P? The IOTA team wasn't even going to have a human wallet (wish they had stuck to that), but made it very clear that the wallet they did issue would be bare bones and users should understand how it works (they obviously didn't), but no one was complaining until something bad happened, so it seems like rehashing a pain point rather than an "I told you so."

Great piece on why Julie Maupin is a pivotal figure for IOTA: https://oracletimes.com/why-julie-maupin-is-important-for-iota-miota-and-the-broader-blockchain-scene/

TLDR Excerpt:
  • In addition to her appointment at Max Planck, she holds external research appointments with the Centre for International Governance Innovation and the University College London Centre for Blockchain Technologies.
  • She has recently been advising IOTA on the incorporation and governance set-up of the foundation and is actively helping to develop projects to be carried out by the social venture fund.
  • Julie Maupin is not just another corporate link with industrial players like Volkswagen and BOSCH. Of course, both companies are sitting on the top of the hill when it comes to technological advancement and innovations around the machine economy and the internet of things (IoT), which is IOTA’s key element, but Dr. Maupin will help IOTA Foundation to establish global governmental level relations that no other blockchain-based project could even talk about.
368  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 18, 2018, 10:32:21 AM
What actually happened to Monero in the last two or three weeks ? The price fell by more than 20 percent. I do not think anyone expected this.

Have you checked out coinmarketcap.com lately? Have you tried noticing the dark red color of whole market there?

I'm still amazed at how myopia doesn't let people pull charts out from more than 6 months or read more than one listing on CMC--they just see whatever confirms their bias and go, "Welp that's my research, look how well I proved that!"

try reaching out to their dev team. they will ban you for asking difficult questions. project may be good or may not be good but their team is pure sht.

I have yet to see someone banned from Discord for not being an ass (though I'm sure they would think otherwise).

From what I have read, they still have issues with scaling in their blockchain. Would prefer Nano for now.

What issues?

As far as Nano goes, IOTA can trivially switch their focus to P2P--it's just a matter of adding human frindly wallets--Nano can't say the same thing about M2M.

Interesting speculation on Q. Essentially the speculation is that Q is an oracle that will allow for smart contracts--this in turn creates a link between current banking and cryptocurrencies with IOTA's network doing the brunt of the work--it's speculative, but of the theories I've read, this one has a basis on what little the Developers have said and actions taken by the Foundation (specifically additions that seem strategic to this end): https://medium.com/@claudio_69833/iotas-ixi-module-q-the-rise-of-incredible-interoperability-maybe-339ffdf3bd12

So are the security issues valid? I've been getting some conflicting opinions regarding the matter. I do like the idea of a completely different type of technology carrying out the same tasks but faster.

There's a dispute between the DCI researcher and CFB on if there is a real vulnerability with Curl-p. It makes no difference ATM as it was removed and is being reviewed by one of the foremost cryptography teams in the world. It's more about egos and who has to eat humble pie--though both sides are trying to cast the other as incompetent/arrogant/malicious.
