241  Other / Meta / Re: BFL subpoena on: April 17, 2015, 11:33:28 AM
@theymos,

are you obliged to give them these 'data' or not?

Awesome.  Cheesy

Use PGP if you want privacy. Wink

You are right, I can't imagine someone read a pgp encrypted message and he doesn't know what the hell is write in that message (because he doesn't have the key for decrypt it ).

Subpoena is a court order, so yes he has to respond (either consent or fight it in court) or he can be jailed.

And yes you should always use PGP or something else for sensitive communications.

I hope they enjoy reading my pm's to Inaba warning him to stop trolling and derailing threads, and him whining about someone else starting it.
242  Other / Meta / Re: Removed from Default Trust on: April 16, 2015, 06:58:21 AM
Correct. Feedback isn't moderated. No matter what happens, except in extreme cases of spam, your feedback will always be there for people to read and decide for themselves. They can also decide if they want to see it as trusted or not. That's what it means, that you have a choice, and ultimately it's up to you.

A lot of people use the wrong terms when talking about the trust system.

Is it an appropriate time for the Pepper your Angus meme?

Oh my god, what is that man doing to his angus?
244  Other / Meta / Re: User girlbtc.com should be banned for scamming on: April 15, 2015, 12:12:40 PM
Scammers are not banned. You need to learn to take the appropriate precautions to prevent yourself from getting scammed.

Even if you present sufficient evidence that you were scammed the administration is not going to decide what is a scam and what is not a scam
This rule is just utterly weird for me to understand, if you prove that someone cheated, robbed and scammed you forum staff should ban him immediately. Seeing how you can be banned for posting off topic replies more likely than when you stole coins from people is just, well... hard to accept.

This is, first and foremost, a discussion forum. Banning someone for breaking a law/contract/agreement is unnecessary, especially when we have the feedback system. People are capable of making up their own minds on who to trade with as long as they have all the information. Breaking a law doesn't mean you don't have anything to contribute.

All that aside, nobody wants to take the amount of time it would take to personally verify every instance of scamming beyond a reasonable doubt. Do you have hours to kill every day, for nothing in return besides a "Thanks!" or "Fuck you!". Or just let people decide for themselves?
245  Other / Meta / Re: Deleted posts in the Hardware BFL Thread, Double Standards, and Hypocrisy on: April 14, 2015, 02:40:08 PM
It could just as easily be argued that filling the thread with so much unrelated garbage was protecting BFL, by hiding any real relevant information.

"Anyone not willing to sift through the 'unrelated garbage' is not worth the information" is also a way to look at it.

I know most mods/admins (you're the third, and counting, in this topic alone) have difficulty looking past their binary true/false logic and even more difficulty grasping human/social interactions... But sorry, "we normal" (<- big wink) people like "our small-talk" (something Bruno obviously understood better, together with the notion of "entertaining an audience").

Neither viewpoint is entirely correct, the best position is somewhere in between.

Quote

EDIT: and how is publicly discussing BFL senior staff (mis-)using the legal (and tax) system by issuing bogus TRO's (and false IRS 1099-MISC forms) to people intimidating them away from exposing their practices considered "unrelated garbage"... Huh

If you seriously think that's the kind of posts anyone is referring to, then there isn't much point in having this conversation, you've made up your mind already.

247  Other / Archival / Re: quickseller on: April 14, 2015, 08:58:03 AM
Again, I see no terms changed. The OP got everything he wanted, and when the escrow tries to conduct the exchange itself in a safe manner for all parties involved, it's suddenly a problem? Yeah that's shady. Especially when he can't come up with a better reason than he did. All of a sudden he doesn't trust QS? Doesn't want his money tied up?

Not buying it.
248  Other / Archival / Re: quickseller on: April 14, 2015, 08:01:41 AM
What terms were changed?

Hey quickseller, meren here wants to sell me a full member account registered in 2012. With 135 activity and 135 posts for 0.1 BTC

Please help us by escrowing this transaction.

Verify the above. If his claims are valid and the acount doesn't have negative overall trust give me an adress to forward the funds for the escrow.

Meren, you can reply to this message to verify that you agree with this procedure.

He verified it all, gave him an address, buyer then backed out after...what exactly? The only thing quickseller dictated was how the actual transfer would take place, which is his job as escrow.
249  Other / Meta / Re: Forum Stats (Global) on: April 14, 2015, 06:38:29 AM
Autoban is just the name of the ban tool.  It's a ban button, opposed to the typical SMF method which involves putting all the information in manually.
250  Other / Archival / Re: quickseller on: April 14, 2015, 06:31:25 AM
Firstly, an escrow's job is to protect all parties involved, including themselves.

Quickseller had already verified the account statistics, seller was ready, all necessary terms had been met. The buyer was waffling for unknown reasons. For Quickseller to take control of the account first is an unnecessary risk for the seller, and also a risk for himself as a reputable escrow.

Sure there's a risk that the seller doesn't actually control the account, but that's the whole purpose of the escrow. The reasons the OP gives for not wanting to fund the escrow address are shady at best (he basically says he doesn't trust quickseller, then why is he using him as escrow?).

Taking control of the account first is a risk that should be avoided, any good escrow will know this.
251  Other / Meta / Re: Why charge me? on: April 14, 2015, 03:51:38 AM
It's not for banned users, it's for innocent users who are wrongfully caught in an ip ban, or who want to use a proxy, like tor.  Some people abuse it to make new accounts after being banned. Paying the fee to register an account does not magically make previous offenses okay, it's still ban evasion.
252  Other / Meta / Re: Why charge me? on: April 13, 2015, 03:59:45 PM
Spammer, account farmer. Fee is because I banned all your accounts a little while ago, besides one.
253  Other / Meta / Re: Why is Bitcointalk hosted on SSDs? on: April 13, 2015, 12:23:19 PM
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2856052/grueling-endurance-test-blows-away-ssd-durability-fears.html

SSD technology has come a long way over the past 10 years. At my current usage rate (higher than average probably), the 840 Evo in my desktop will wear out in about 12 years, and that's a consumer drive, not enterprise (I don't know what SSD's are in use here). A platter drive I would normally replace after 5 years, or 50,000-60,000 hours. It also uses more power, produces more heat, is more vulnerable to shock, etc. They have their place still, but longevity is not a reason to buy a platter drive.

People worried about the finite lifecycle of a SSD are, for the most part, being ridiculous or using it as an excuse to justify their terrible decision to stick with platter drives. Your netbook probably has a cheap one. Cheap drives are crap drives, doesn't matter what kind they are.
254  Other / Meta / Re: "THE LIST" on: April 11, 2015, 10:21:40 PM
Newbie jail won't help, they just make 50 accounts at a time and rotate them out, making new ones as the old ones are banned, and aging them as they use the already created ones. It would only be effective for the first few days. It affects legitimate users more than them.

What would really help is if people would stop responding to the trolling and giving them the attention they want, that's pretty much the sole reason they keep coming back.
255  Other / Meta / Re: Please tell me why my account banned ! on: April 10, 2015, 07:16:08 AM
You're a spammer and account farmer. That ban message is normal if the field is left empty.

I'm still trying to figure out the rules.  I have read The Unofficial (Officials) Rules and I honestly can't discern exactly what is considered spam here.  Could you please tell me?  Thank you.

If you can't tell what's spam, then just report it to the mods and let them deal with it, that's what they do. If you're the one spamming, the mods will deal with that too.

You're a spammer and account farmer. That ban message is normal if the field is left empty.

Yes, I know that. Partly because I do not understand the rules and partially imitate when I see people post as much as. but I am not deliberate

spammer. I always keep in mind about that and trying to do a good post. I do not post indiscriminately. That's why some of them is even only 2-5

activity.

Sincerely thanks !

I'm sorry, but i cannot understand how is forum fault of you having not enough grasp of the English Language. Here we have scores of people who spoke English as a Second Language/English as a Foreign Language so forum is not biased against non-WASP people. If you cannot understand English parts of the forum, I strongly suggest you to limit yourself to local boards whose Language you can understand (maybe the Viet one since you claim to be Vietnamese) until you could be proficient enough with the English Language to understand forum rules and contribute to community discussion (probably you'll need to progress to an Independent User level)

Just my 2 satoshi!

First of all. I sincerely thanks for advice !

I do not mean like that . I just want you to understand and sympathize that my English is not good enough to understand all the forum rules , but do

not blame it. In any case though, I know it was my fault.

I do not intend here to ask for a unban that I'm here is to hoping everyone here can help me to better understand.Language in the rules of the forum

sometimes it's too hard for me to understand . I also use, "Google Translate" but sometimes it's not exactly in my language. So I came here with the

hope that you can "interpret" it in a way that is easy to understand more.

You know, I also came here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=60101.340

After all, Sincerely thanks again !

Ask the moderator in your local section.

If you really want to participate here I won't ban your new account, but if you abuse the forum you'll end up banned eventually.

Sorry, but I really don't understand "Ask the moderator in your local section" ? How can I understand that ? or What does it means?

I always want to participate here.I would like to thank you for not banning my new account

And Once again, I sincerely thanks for your generosity !

Not sure what else I can do or say. Find another viatnemese speaker to help you?

258  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: LE is using LocalBitcons as a honeypot to trap criminals - What to do? on: April 09, 2015, 09:08:31 AM
Here are some tips:

- Find out how Bitcoin trading through LocalBitcoins is treated by your country. Find out the maximum amount you are allowed to trade. If it's illegal. Don't do it!
- Don't trade high volumes. LE looks exactly for that and they will also buy from you big amounts. LE is allowed to do that, don't forget about it.
- If your customer says, he will use the bitcoins for anything illegal, then don't sell it to him. No matter how much you could earn. Don't do it! Even if your business is legal and you pay tax - Simply don't.

Anything more to add?

Wait wait a second here. So the title of this thead is "LE is using LocalBitcons as a honeypot to trap criminals - What to do?", and you give tips to actually help the criminals who may be doing crimes like sex trafficking, drug trafficking, money laundering, and more?

OP, I hope you go to jail for a very long ass time.
Trading money with someone so that they can do something illegal, isn't illegal.  If someone sells me his watch, and then goes and buys drugs with that money, I am not to blame for the drugs trade, otherwise employers would be in a lot of trouble all the time!

He also explicitly says that if they want to do anything illegal, you should not sell to them.  These are fair and reasonable tips to someone trading on local bitcoins legitimately.

It sounds like localbitcoins will be gone soon enough, or replaced by something less easy to track. It's a shame really.

Selling to someone for the purpose of conducting illegal activities is illegal. The specific charge would likely be money laundering, or straight up trafficking. If someone says they intend to do something illegal with the bitcoin they are buying, refuse the sale and walk away. A real criminal will not do that.

If it is a sting, they will probably follow you and talk to you anyway to see if they can dig anything up on you. Just remember, never talk to the cops, it cannot help you. A police officer cannot testify in your defense based on what you say, it's hearsay, they can only testify against you.

Yes, both are used. It's pretty obvious what he meant if one were to read the OP.

260  Other / Meta / Re: Is there a way to search a specific thread, or a specific $string? on: April 08, 2015, 12:38:53 PM
The forum search is limited to where you are on the forum. If you are within a thread, and you use the search box at the top, it's only going to search in that thread. If you are within a childboard (at the topic listing), it will only search in that board. If you want to search the entire board you need to go to the search page or the main page, with the board listing.

Google does tend to be more accurate overall, but forum search is useful for certain things, so it's good to know how it works.
