1401  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum failed transactions on: August 02, 2020, 05:24:29 PM
@josefmarcelo

Since you didn't update electrum for more than a year, and have malware on your PC, it might be worth to consider formatting your hard drive.
Backing up important data, and formatting the drive to install a fresh OS (no outdated or cracked one) already makes you more secure.

For the future, you might want to check electrum's website regularly for updates and learn how to verify the PGP signature. Only the legit version of electrum will be correctly signed.
1402  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What happened to my electrum wallet on: August 02, 2020, 05:08:20 PM
Above was right, that isn't an attack lol, and nobody will attack if they will give you some fraction of Bitcoin. That's too generosity if someone does that.

While it wasn't in this case, a dust attack trying to deanonymize user, does exist.
However, the amount sent is way smaller than a few $.

Unfortunately, if Charles-Tim lost his wallet file, and has to recover the wallet from seeds, he will not see address labels again.

There is a "label sync" plugin for electrum which uploads your labels to a server.
This allows you to retrieve them after recovering your wallet with the mnemonic.

There are definitely some privacy concerns regarding this. But some people don't care about privacy and therefore this might be something useful for them.
1403  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Hash Bounty on: August 02, 2020, 05:02:34 PM
If you bought some old wallets/hashes/whatever, you got scammed.
No one is selling you a wallet with 100+ BTC for a few bucks.

If it truly is your wallet, feel free to give us more information about your situation. But until then most people are going to assume you are one of these people who got scammed by buying such a wallet with the hope of earning a quick buck.
1404  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: FAQ: Privnote.com - Was ist das eigentlich? 03/2020 on: July 16, 2020, 10:57:15 AM

1405  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Nothing is truly decentralized using a centralized ISP on: July 12, 2020, 08:07:01 PM
If it has access to the world wide web, then you can surf the web globally and use global applications on it. It's not a local web. It's a decentralized web peer community connected to the world wide web.

If your network is connected to "the internet", your traffic can again be censored by ISP's and their routers.
You'd need to have a local global network without any ISP. And this is not the case with your mesh network connected to the world wide web.

You can also encrypt the signal between peers so that they are anonymous to each other.

Encryption does not make you anonymous. It protects the content against tampering and curious participants of the network.
1406  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Encrypting messages question on: July 12, 2020, 07:59:37 PM
Yes but I'm trying to say that if a person can decrypt the hash(private_key) (which is the public key), he can do it for the hash(hash(private_key)) too. (which is the address)

Hashing and encrypting is something completely different.
Hashing is a one-way function. Easy and fast to calculate the hash of an input, but practically impossible to calculate the input out of the hash.

An encryption on the other hand can be reversed by knowing the corresponding key. Since you were referring to asymmetric encryption, the necessary key here is the private key while the public key is used to encrypt the message.

Both public key and address are texts that no one can do something to steal your coins.

Correct.

Both public key and address begin from the same string (private key)

Correct.

Both public key and address mean the same thing. (If you have the public key you can make the address)

They do not "mean the same thing".
On a technical level, addresses don't exist. They are made for humans.

And yes, the address can be derived from the public key by using the corresponding hash function(s).

I just don't get why we can't use the address as ”The Box”.

Because messages are signed with a private key and verified by the public key.
Messages are encrypting with the public key and encrypted with the private key.

You can not use the address, because you can not get the public key out of the address. Only the other way around (public key -> address via one-way function).
1407  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which VPN to pick? on: July 12, 2020, 07:48:10 PM
I've never recommended a specific VPN, because different people need and use VPNs for different reasons, and there is not a single best "one size fits all" VPN for all requirements.

Most people don't really need a VPN.
They believe a VPN increases their privacy and security, which is plain wrong.

Depending on the country you live in, a VPN provider might be more trustworthy than your ISP. But this definitely does not apply to the western world.
Anyone using a VPN to protect his privacy, is doing something wrong.

The majority of people asking questions about VPNs actually shouldn't use one because there are better alternatives available which do not completely invade their privacy.

1409  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Does blocksize affect speed to sync Bitcoin Core on: July 12, 2020, 07:10:36 PM
Less blocks with more transactions would sync faster than more blocks with less transactions, indeed.
But i think the difference wouldn't be that big if you compare 1MB blocks to 8 MB blocks, for example.

There is still a lot of validation necessary. The amount of transactions is probably the biggest factor. Whether X transactions are in 1 block or in 4 blocks shouldn't play a huge role.
1410  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: BTC stolen from Trezor!! on: July 12, 2020, 07:05:29 PM
Transaction shouldn't broadcast if you do not confirm from your device.

A transaction not only shouldn't be broadcasted, but can't be broadcasted until you confirm it on your device.
The signing process only happens after confirming the transaction. You can't broadcast an unconfirmed transaction (theoretically you can, but it can't be included into a valid block).
1411  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin network knowledge poll on: July 12, 2020, 06:33:42 PM
Thank you for the reply, franky1.

Don't listen to him.
He is a known troll on this forum claiming that SPV wallets are not bitcoin and the LN is not related to bitcoin at all and centralized. He is either full of hate or delusional. Or maybe both.

My next question. There are people like Roger Ver, and other people in the community that spread the narrative, "ordinary people don't need to run full nodes". Are they wrong? Should we encourage people to try running a node, than discouraging them?

Definitely.
Whether one needs to run a full node depends on their goal with BTC.

If you want to have a good privacy while contributing to the network, you should definitely run a full node.
If you just want to hold and spend some BTC, you definitely don't need to run one.
1412  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: utxo doesnt show up in wasabi on: July 12, 2020, 06:27:46 PM
ok thanks guys...but i have solved the problem!!
the dust threshold was set to high.... so it wouldnt show the transaction!

Thanks for coming back and reporting what the issue was.
I probably wouldn't have thought about that. The logs showed everything is fine, so i would have assumed that this is a bug.

I will keep this in mind in case someone else is running into such an issue.

A bit off-topic, but are there any possible problem when you run 2 instance of Wasabi wallet altogether?

Not really a problem, but it can behave a bit buggy regarding displaying new incoming transactions.
Someone had a problem roughly 2 weeks ago, where he was running 2 instances at the same time and didn't see an incoming transaction. The reason was that you don't see incoming transactions in a second instance until the TX is confirmed.

While this wasn't the case here, running 2 instances still could have caused some other displaying issues. Therefore i asked  Smiley
1413  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Which wallet as per you is Privacy centric? on: July 12, 2020, 06:21:26 PM
Unlike Wasabi Wallet which have fixed output size (about 0.01BTC) and fixed coordinator address, Whirlpool have fewer participant and the output is varied which makes blockchain analysis have harder time determining whether it's regular or CoinJoin transaction.

On the other hand, the downside of having less participants is that the anonymity set is smaller.
Wasabi is aiming at a anonymity set of 100. Coins with an anonymity set of 50 are considered good in terms of privacy in wasabi.

Having only ~10 participants could be quite risky and shouldn't be considered as enough privacy. Obviously, mixing multiple times is an option to increase the anonymity set and therefore the privacy.
1414  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: ElectrumX on local network: should I use LAN or Tor? on: July 10, 2020, 09:17:06 PM
So I think I will add to that traffic by configuring my Electrum wallet to access my ElectrumX server by Tor. I don't see downside to that.

Bandwith and traffic.

There is literally not a single good reason to connect your electrum server and electrum client via Tor if both of them share the same local network.
You not only decrease the security and potentially the privacy, but also increase your bandwith and overall traffic.

Do you see an advantage doing this instead of keeping it all inside of your local network? If so, which is it?
1415  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the difference between a bitcoin address and a bitcoin wallet? on: July 10, 2020, 08:47:59 PM
Something i didn't read in this thread yet.. a wallet is a piece of software or a combination of software and hardware which is an interface for you to access your private keys.
It allows you to easily manage your private keys.

These private keys can sign transactions to send BTC assigned to the corresponding public key.
An address is the hash (RIPEMD160 of SHA256) of the public key.

Wallets do generate a random seed which is then used to derive all of your private keys. At least that's the case for HD wallets (which almost all wallets are).
Most wallets then convert the seed into a mnemonic code (often 12/24 words) for easier backups.

So, TLDR:
Wallets = Software/Hardware to manage your private keys.
Address = Hash of the public key and used as an identifier in transactions.
1416  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: utxo doesnt show up in wasabi on: July 10, 2020, 08:40:26 PM
Read the pinned topic ([READ BEFORE POSTING] Tech Support Help Request Format) first. Then provide the mentioned information.
OS and screenshot of the screen might be helpful but I'm not sure how much the rest of it will...

Not only the OS and (eventually) a screenshot, but also the version of wasabi and logs.
It is just easier when people use the format. We get all relevant information for a brief overview which results in a faster resolution of the problem OP is facing.

Another question @OP: Did you have 2 instances of wasabi running at the same time?
1417  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Bitcoin Armory installation on Mint 20.04 on: July 10, 2020, 08:23:36 PM
I tried to install python-qt4 and other dependencies, but had some issues as well.

You need to install python-qt4.
Which errors did you encounter when trying to install it?
1418  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Which wallet as per you is Privacy centric? on: July 10, 2020, 07:47:07 PM
The best wallet for your bare bone privacy is a full node (e.g. bitcoin core).

If you want to use privacy features to increase your privacy further, wasabi is the only one available for a desktop system.
Any other lightweight client is definitely not recommended.

For a mobile, as others have mentioned already, samourai. Definitely not mycelium which is just a 'normal' lightweight client and harmful to your privacy.
1419  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: BTC stolen from Trezor!! on: July 10, 2020, 07:42:54 PM
Please provide all necessary information as mentioned in the pinned topic: [READ BEFORE POSTING] Tech Support Help Request Format

Most likely one of these 2 options happened:

1) Your PC is infected with malware and it created a transaction sending everything to the attackers Address. And you didn't check the transaction (address, amount) on your device and just pressed "send".
2) Someone got access to your trezor or the mnemonic code.

Could you answer these questions please:
  • Did you double and triple check the transactin on your trezor?
  • How did you backup your mnemonic code? Digitally?
  • Did you initially create the seed and mnemonic code on the trezor device?
  • Did anyone have access to your trezor?

Read the pinned topic ([READ BEFORE POSTING] Tech Support Help Request Format) first. Then provide the mentioned information.

If the address you sent your funds to is part of your wallet, i assume that it is not properly connected.
Is Tor up and running? Is the backend connected? What does the log say?
