4901  Economy / Economics / HSBC Bank Helped Terrorists, Iran, Drug Cartels & Russians Launder Money on: April 13, 2017, 07:41:24 PM
Quote
A Senate report released ahead of the embargo time revealed that HSBC’s lax anti-money laundering policies allowed Mexican drug money, Iranian terrorist money, and even suspicious Russian money to enter the U.S. and gain access to U.S. dollar liquidity over the last couple of years.

The report, released late on Monday despite a 10 PM embargo time, was prepared by the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, and counted with the support of Senators Carl Levin and Tom Coburn.

In a year-long investigation, the Subcommittee found that HSBC violated several rules, exposing the U.S. financial system to “a wide array of money laundering, drug trafficking, and terrorist financing.”  According to the report, HSBC’s Mexican affiliate channeled $7 billion into the U.S. between 2007 and 2008 which possibly included “proceeds from illegal drug sales in the United States.”

UPDATE: In a statement, HSBC acknowledged that "in the past, we have sometimes failed to meet the standards that regulators and customers expect."  Vowing to improve their oversight and compliance with the law, they committed to fixing what is wrong, taking the opportunity to learn from previous mistakes.

HSBC actively circumvented rules designed to “block transactions involving terrorists, drug lords, and rogue regimes.”  In one case, “two HSBC affiliates sent nearly 25,000 transactions involving $19.4 billion through their HBUS [HSBC’s U.S. affiliate] accounts over seven years without disclosing the transactions’ links to Iran.”

They provided U.S. dollar financing and services to banks in Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh that were tied to terrorist organizations, while also clearing $290 million in “obviously suspicious travelers cheques” that benefitted Russians “who claimed to be in the used car business.”

Furthermore, the investigation showed how the bank’s regulator, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) failed to take a single enforcement action against HSBC despite numerous violations by the international bank.  Among them, failing to monitor $60 trillion in wire transfer and account activity, a backlog of 17,000 unreviewed account alerts regarding potentially suspicious activity, and a failure to conduct anti-money laundering due diligence before opening accounts for HSBC affiliates.

Senator Levin, whose scolding of Goldman Sachs’ Lloyd Blankfein during a hearing on collaterized debt obligations made him a well-known face in Wall Street, was hard on both HSBC and their regulator:

Quote
Due to poor AML [anti-money laundering] controls, HBUS exposed the United States to Mexican drug money, suspicious travelers cheques, bearer share corporations, and rogue jurisdictions.  The bank’s federal bank regulator, the OCC, tolerated HSBC’s weak AML system for years.  If an international bank won’t police its own affiliates to stop illicit money, the regulatory agencies should consider whether to revoke the charter of the U.S. bank being used to aid and abet that illicit money.

The Senate’s Subcommittee will reveal its findings on Tuesday during a Congressional hearing that will include testimony by HSBC officials and federal regulators.  This report is the latest in a string of embarrassments for the world’s major banks.  Only a few days ago, JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon finally revealed further details on the so-called London Whale trades (which reportedly cost the bank more than $5 billion), while the on-going Libor manipulation scandal sparked a series of lawsuits that could be difficult to swallow for Barclays and other institutions involved.

HSBC’s New York-traded shares fell in post-market trading, as the report was leaked.  After a 0.3% decline during the trading session, the stock dropped 2.5% to $42.50 by the end of aftermarket trading.

I think of this article whenever people claim bitcoin might be used for money laundering or terrorism.

This is one of the first things I saw which made me question how useful or effective capital controls or "regulation" are.

Another was the case of big pharma selling ephedrine/pseudo ephedrine directly to meth dealers without penalty.

In theory, things like this are never supposed to happen. In reality, they happen all the time.

4902  Economy / Economics / Re: Can we stop talking about the same shit? on: April 13, 2017, 07:30:43 PM
Yes,there is a huge shortage of new topics.Members should actively start new topics so that people can get vast knowledge about bitcoin.By creating new topics,we can atleast contribute a little for the progress of bitcoin community.

Sounds like a good idea. I think I will start making more new threads in this section. I have a lot of good links in my bookmarks I can post.

Most of the best articles I've come across were from previous years, when the media was less repressed and journalistic integrity was higher.

Don't now if that matters considering a lot of the topics on page 1 were made 5 years ago.
4903  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you believe in the NWO? What economic effect could it have on bitcoin? on: April 13, 2017, 07:28:54 PM
I don't think it's as easy as that, although banned user but could have done a lot already, during the bitcoin still many loyal users of course the price will never drop significantly.

As long as the media continues to attack Trump, I will have to think Trump hasn't sold out and is still trying to make the world a better place for everyone.

The media also attacked Obama early in his 1st term, back when Obama tried to pass real reform over financial/banking/credit card industries.

I tend to believe Trump is good for bitcoin and crypto, but we will have to see as Trump has never said anything about bitcoin that I know of.
4904  Economy / Economics / Re: New here: Tut for people interested in earning bitcoins (legit) on: April 13, 2017, 07:24:44 PM
I don't have any knowledge of how bitcoin works. So if there is someone willing to give like a tutorial I would really appreciate it...

There is an easy to understand collection of video lectures on khan academy, which give a basic overview:

https://www.khanacademy.org/economics-finance-domain/core-finance/money-and-banking/bitcoin/v/bitcoin-what-is-it

Coursera has a more in depth and detailed free course of video lectures, but it is not explained well & is harder to understand:

4905  Economy / Economics / Re: Gibraltar War on: April 12, 2017, 11:58:38 PM
You certainly don't know

They don't need their nuclear weapons to be deployed stationary anywhere near the Falklands since they have ballistic-missile submarines which can deliver a nuclear warhead right to the coast of Argentina itself (or elsewhere, for that matter). You should be well familiar with the accident which happened in February 2009 when two submarines collided in the Atlantic ocean

One of them was British nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine HMS Vanguard

Some nations also have disguised secret underground missile bases.

The united states was known to have one buried beneath the ice sheet in greenland, under project iceworm.

4906  Economy / Economics / Re: books about economy on: April 12, 2017, 11:45:36 PM
These seem to be nice books. Can you suggest anything that would be easy to read? I mean, I've seen books with long paragraphs that are just basically a single sentence. It can get confusing to read, especially for non-native speakers.

The Quants: How a New Breed of Math Whizzes Conquered Wall Street and Nearly Destroyed It by Scott Patterson.

Beat the Dealer: A Winning Strategy for the Game of Twenty-One by Edward Thorp.
4907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If YOU were Satoshi, what would you do now? on: April 12, 2017, 11:34:52 PM
If I were Satoshi, I would try to find ways to decentralize other areas of everyday living & break up monopolies which hinder human progress and innovation.

Energy markets could benefit from decentralization.

Food production also.

There are many areas of life which could benefit by being more decentralized other than currency.
4908  Economy / Economics / Re: One Reason not to be "All Inn" on any Single Investment for Long on: April 12, 2017, 11:29:03 PM
There have been multiple studies done over the years which concluded the vast majority of stock market & commodities traders fail to produce greater than 5% profits.

I think that's where most pro diversification rhetoric comes from.

The unspoken understanding that most who try to be successful traders/investors are not which makes planning for worst case scenarios a standard procedure.

Diversification could also be standard procedure for crypto given the lack of historical precedents to draw upon. Crypto is essentially uncharted territory.
4909  Economy / Speculation / Re: "The price of your bitcoin is 1000 times overvalued" on: April 12, 2017, 10:13:08 PM
Mao Zedong's "revolution" was funded by foreign bankers.

Today, china is still heavily influenced by foreign banks.

That's why china will always push for "regulation" or if they can't have regulatory control over crypto, they will try to destroy it.

China will always work in the best interests of bankers rather than what is best for ordinary people.
4910  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UFC 213: Bisping vs GSP Info and Prediction Thread on: April 11, 2017, 10:03:12 PM
A lot of the people GSP fought at welterweight, like Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit looked much bigger than GSP in the cage.

I would have to think Michael Bisping could have enough of a size advantage at 185 to have a chance of winning.

Cody Garbrandt vs TJ Dillashaw will be an exciting fight for sure.
4911  Economy / Economics / Re: Places to look for economical news and trends? on: April 11, 2017, 09:54:37 PM
I'm surprised at the OP because you have this forum's economy section at your disposal do where else and what else are you looking for to read?

There are a lot of groundbreaking and interesting articles that never make it to the economics section of this forum.

I have a feeling newer thought provoking threads in this section only receive a handful of replies, while the more generic ones have been on page 1 since 2012.

Would be nice if more people posted economic/financial threads in this section to help us get rid of the old threads that are being beaten like dead horses.
4912  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin changes finance - but for the better or the worse? on: April 11, 2017, 09:45:21 PM
Off the top of my head, btc has positives in terms of.

-Putting pressure on wire transfer services to reduce their transaction fees.
-Putting pressure on state sanctioned currencies to compete in terms of price stability.

There are positive ways in which btc changes finance for the better.

So i have to disagree with you. I don't think wire transfer services are changing their fee structure at all, but some people now realize there's an alternative to typical wire transfer options.

And how is Bitcoin encouraging fiat currency stability? Bitcoin is super unstable!

In 2014 walmart launched their own money transfer service, which undercut transfer fees by a big margin. source

Walmart's transfer fees(and their competitors) in comparison to bitcoin:

The answer may be: yes, wire transfer services are changing their fees & if they want to compete with bitcoin they will need to change them even more.  Smiley

Fiat stability is like a large dam that either blocks all water or allows all water through(after the dam is destroyed).

At first glance, crypto might appear less stable than the dollar and other fiat. But if that fiat dam breaks and hyperinflation occurs I don't think things will look that way anymore.

There are also issues with fiat being overburdened with deficit.

Bitcoin "instability" isn't really an issue as even when it declined to $900, it was still 300% higher than it was 1 or 2 years prior.

If bitcoin and crypto becomes more mainstream, it could put a lot of pressure on wire transfer services run by walmart.

It could put more pressure on fiat also to show that being regulated can provide real and lasting value, which evidence could contradict at this point.

4913  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UFC on FOX 24: Johnson vs Reis Info and Prediction Thread on: April 11, 2017, 09:22:44 PM
I think Wilson Reis trains out of Alliance MMA in San Diego with Dominick Cruz.

Wilson Reis is known for having a very good ground game & his wrestling looked very good in his last fight with Yuta Sasaki.

But would have to think Demetrious Johnson will win.

I like a lot of fights on this card. There are a lot of good prospects who are very skilled even if they're relatively unknown.
4914  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UFC 211: Miocic vs Dos Santos info and Prediction Thread on: April 11, 2017, 08:32:10 PM
doesn't dos Santos have some sort of brain damage?  I don't know if it's just a rumor or something but a friend mentioned it once and I just kinda took it with a grain of salt.

JDS doesn't have brain damage.

But it was confirmed he got a medical condition called rhabdomyolysis sometime around his 2nd fight with Cain Velasquez.

There are plenty of articles about it on MMA news sites.
4915  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin defeats the Chinese government on: April 10, 2017, 11:52:22 PM
Mao Zedong's "revolution" was funded by international banking cartels.

Today, banks wield a great deal of influence in china.

It could help to recognize many of china's policies are written by bankers, rather than by chinese politicians.
4916  Economy / Economics / Re: Do You Think They’ll Use the US Dollar on Mars? on: April 10, 2017, 09:11:53 PM
If I remember right, it takes light from the sun 8 minutes to reach earth and something like 12 minutes to reach mars.

This means it could take 4 minutes for radio waves and communications between earth and mars.

That long distance could mean supplies, equipment & parts shipped from earth to mars could take months or years to arrive.

There probably won't be a large selection of goods imported to mars from earth.

This could mean rather than a system of currency, mars would have some type of barter or trade system.
4917  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UFC 210: Cormier vs Johnson Info and Prediction Thread on: April 10, 2017, 08:58:37 PM
@Hydrogen. I also did not do well. I changed my mind and I bet on Chris Weidman at the last minute and on AJ the day the odds were available the month before the fight.

AJ fought very much like the last time he fought Daniel. I do not think it was about his game plan. Maybe Daniel is a bad match up for him?

Some have said Anthony Johnson doesn't like being punched in the face. Daniel Cormier hit Johnson with a good right hand & that's when Johnson started to wrestle -- maybe because he didn't want to be punched in the face again?

Johnson could also has a tendency to give up easily. He might have gave up when he fought Vitor and also when he fought Cormier the 1st time.
4918  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: China leading the way for a regulated bitcoin on: April 10, 2017, 08:41:03 PM
It sounds like they're trying to turn OKCOIN into a corrupt financial transfer service like paypal that is known to freeze funds and rob people for no reason.

Regulation carries no benefits for end users of exchanges.

Regulation was not needed before and isn't needed now.

Regulation is the reason the united states is $20 trillion in debt.

Regulation does nothing as we all know banks have been laundering money for terrorists, drug cartels and other illegal groups for years & continue to launder money for them til this day.

4919  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where to seek quality information about Bitcoin when most of the users spamers? on: April 10, 2017, 08:23:42 PM
Seriously, most of the users signature spamers, where i can seek qualility news and research about bitcoin?

What type of info are you looking for?

Most hate against sig posters seem to stem from bitcoin unlimited supporters who are upset about sig posters making credible arguments for why BU's fork is bad policy.

Even BU supporters don't try to defend BU because even they know BU sucks.  Cheesy  They just complain about "sig posters", even they know BU can't be defended.

I like Bram Cohen (bit torrent creator) as a source of crypto news and research. Bram Cohen is a good software engineer who understands the technical arguments. He isn't subject to conflicts of interest like others involved with bitcoin or any other alt currency which would make him biased. If you check out his twitter and some of the articles he's written, his stuff is good.

With other developers, things get more dicey. People are biased and invent perspectives to protect/increase their holdings in alt. They're aren't a lot of independent voices out there.

I haven't kept up with economic news or trends in a long time.

Sites I used to frequent were places like.

Seekingalpha.com

Fool.com

Zerohedge.com

Bloomberg, wall street journal, economist, the atlantic, morningstar, etc -- there are a lot of good sites out there.
