161  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: Is Google different now? on: December 11, 2020, 04:57:55 AM
Google has clearly changed, that's already covered, but the websites have changed too. Many have "google optimizations" that allows their crap get to you easier than the things you are looking for.
So the problem is bigger than "just" Google.

I do search on the internet a lot.
Luckily for me, I still get in about 75% of the cases what I expect in a Google search.
On the other hand, disappointingly, DuckDuckGo was almost similar to Bing for me: way off my actual questions.

I noticed that Bing is a little more like Google used to be.

Many searches yield similar results, but here's one where they really yield different answers.

To preface this, I do have a job, I'm just searching out of curiosity.

The search is as follows: "cycle of unemployment in those who never had jobs"

The google results are all sites that are more popular, yet useless. They provide definitions, or theories that are not really relevant to the question.
The bing results are actually a lot more useful.

I believe google was more like Bing is now (although not at all the same).

Try it, I wonder if you'll come to the same conclusions.

I'll list the results from each site for that same exact search.

I don't want to rate more than the first few results because I'm pressed for time

However Bing did manage to dig up something useful in the first 5 results even if the page was the cached version:

Here's an excerpt:

Quote
Long-term unemployment is defined as looking for work for 27 weeks or more – roughly six months. Once someone hits the six-month mark, they are less attractive to potential employers and are less likely to find a job. The economy also significantly influences long-term unemployment. The percentage of unemployed workers who were seeking employment for longer than six months doubled between 2007 and 2013 to almost 40 percent of the unemployed.

But, it’s not just an economic problem. The consequences of long-term unemployment are manifold. Joblessness is correlated with poor nutrition and health, as well as high property crime. Unemployment has detrimental effects not just on someone’s finances, but also on their psyche. The effects of unemployment on mental health are significant. Depression is more common in the unemployed – occurring at more than twice the rate than those with full-time work. For the long-term unemployed, it’s even higher. Unemployment is also commonly associated with anxiety and low self-esteem.

It makes sense. A job is a defining part of our existence. We spend more time working than doing almost anything else. It gives us meaning, purpose, and a livelihood. The loss of a job and unemployment come riddled with self-doubt, hopelessness, and despair. And, the barriers to overcome unemployment grow larger with time.

In the Google of the past I wouldn't expect all that garbage clogging up result space. Bing is about the same as google but to me it looks like the results are more similar to what Google was in the past.

I can't prove it but it feels like search engines nowadays are pushing results rather then serving them up. Kind of like here is what is promoted and cleared for these terms rather than here is what is showing up in the database.

Price is jumping around like a fish out of water.

What the hell? This isn't 2013 is it?
163  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 30, 2020, 03:00:11 AM

I wonder what we do tomorrow and the 31 days in December.

Key days

Nov 30 ------- first month entirely over 13,500
Dec 31 -------- don't know but if we do better in December than we did in Nov it would be very nice.

Jan 20 --------- Joe Biden takes over? By the way he needed to go to emergency care today (no joke) hmmm this could be very interesting.

We do the same thing we've always done. Excitedly hodl our coins and build our stacks to the best of our ability.
164  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warning by Coinbase of Treasury Rule Change for KYC All Addresses. Poll! :) on: November 28, 2020, 04:05:26 PM
It's not at all clear what would happen but I believe that bitcoin can function despite the government and not with its permission. Even if bitcoin crashed the biggest blow would be to the centralized exchanges which would be replaced by decentralized ones.

165  Other / Off-topic / Re: US bank account on: November 28, 2020, 05:59:02 AM
I moved to a different country but need a US bank account now for business, I guess the only option if I use relatives' or friends address.

For some business purpose but I don't have an address

I think most banks are asking for your ID and it should include your home address.

Why do you want that? Banks are known to be asking for information like this for their depositors.
If it's really needed, rent somewhere and ask your landlord that it's needed for your application in a bank account.

I'm confused, where are you staying right now? why don't you use that address where you're staying?

If I were you I'd call them and ask. Just start calling different banks and don't forget about Credit Unions either.
I'm sure someone will let you open an account if all you're missing is a current address. As long as you have all the other KYC stuff.

167  Other / Off-topic / Re: US bank account on: November 26, 2020, 11:41:41 PM
Hey guys, is it possible to open online a US bank account without providing an address?

I don't think you can open a US bank account without an address. I've probably only opened 3 accounts in my life but I needed to give out a lot of information including ID and SSN.
168  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Is Coinbase a trustworthy company? on: November 26, 2020, 11:37:04 PM
If they're asking you to install their app to earn any rewards, there has to be a catch for them. Money doesn't grow on trees, however trustworthy the company is, they're not a charity.

The catch is obvious there, shilling for a project, they're probably getting paid (same as advertisement).

I did end up doing it, they gave me $10 of free eth (which I probably should have kept and not followed their tutorial) and $3 of some stablecoin, so that I would follow a tutorial to stake some BS coin. So I ended up with $4 of free ETH (leftover from transaction) and some staked free stable coins. ($3 staked CUSDC coins)

Something else, at the dip earlier today (16.3k), coinbase pro was down so I missed buying one of the dips. I already bought the previous dip but I still wanted a little more.

That's the thread I was looking for!

My biggest grievance with coinbase so far is them going down at the worst possible times. I never keep any BTC on the exchange. So if they go down I'd be mostly unaffected.

I like some of their features though. I'd feel really frustrated if I was running coinbase and all I got was hate from the people within my own industry. They do so many things right.

For the average Joe to buy bitcoin (if they use coinbase pro for less fees) I'd recommend them.
169  Other / Off-topic / Re: Highly compressed games or softwares? on: November 26, 2020, 05:26:51 PM
I been searching around for highly compressed PC or android games and softwares , but all of the files I found are corrupted. Do you know any real website that offers working highly compressed files? in the region of 1-200mb

There are some excellent games that take very little space.

Take FTL, it's set in space but takes very little space on your hard drive.

Takes forever to get good at but nothing feels like your first win in FTL. (FTL: Faster Than Light)

Takes less than 300MB on your hard drive. PC is really the only way to go with that game.
170  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin at $20,000 is it still a good price? on: November 24, 2020, 03:55:07 AM
That chart is pure bull fuel. We'll see if it holds in the future.

Charts like this can be self-fulfilling prophecies.

I don't think 20k is moon, it just sounds like chump change for what Bitcoin could get up to, but despite its large marketcap the technology and usability is not there just yet. As always if you're not ready to kiss all that money good-bye, don't invest it in bitcoin.
171  Other / Serious discussion / Is Coinbase a trustworthy company? on: November 20, 2020, 06:03:12 AM
I was about to install their wallet on my phone for a coinbase earn reward. But I didn't. Their mobile wallet doesn't appear to be open source. So I didn't do it just yet.

I tried to search the forum for an answer but I couldn't find any good threads on it, even though I remember reading one a few months back. My experience with them so far has only been positive.

My gut feeling is not to trust this company. I don't have any reasons why, or actual logic and this is why I'm posting here.

Are there any red flags around Coinbase?

I want to pre-empt this with the obvious I'm not holding my bitcoin with them, nor do I have it on my phone.
172  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Florida $15/hr Miminum wage (Amendment 2) Passed on: November 06, 2020, 05:07:39 AM
I thought from when I first read the title, it will be in effect in the coming year.

I'll try and fix the title right now.

Edit: couldn't think of a good way to put this in the title, I think that's why I left it out originally, but I did state it clearly in the OP, I guess you're reading a topic, not topic titles, and I hope you at least skim the OP before replying!

Because that's quite terrible for businesses that are just slowly opening because of this pandemic. At least it will be gradual and by the time it will hit $15/hr, it won't be a problem anymore. They won't even noticed the change. At least, this amendment will be a guarantee that there will be increase of min wage in the succeeding years.

It's the businesses that pay low wages that are the terrible ones. In an ideal society there wouldn't be a minimum wage and if a free person wants to waste their time getting paid 10 cents they should be able to do it, but in the context of our society, a minimum wage protects workers from their corporate overlords.

Well, if the minimum wage rose with productivity it'd be something like $18 per hour.

And honestly all those stupid jobs is what is wrong with our society. It's an endless hamster wheel of stupidity. 150 years ago almost everyone had to produce food so that people wouldn't starve.

Now that it takes only 3% of people to produce the food, we should all be working 16 hour work weeks and live comfortably, instead we've created this shit-show of a society.

We pay rent-seeking assholes left and right, and all the work is pointless busy work. All those retail jobs are unnecessary, the wages, if set by free people would be much higher, and all the nonsense work that doesn't deserve to be done wouldn't be done. That's an ideal society right there.

173  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Florida $15/hr Miminum wage (Amendment 2) Passed on: November 05, 2020, 07:58:08 PM
This is going to cost a lot of jobs. But what's even more unsurprising is that Oregon voted to decriminalize all drugs, including black tar heroin, meth, coke, the usual.

I swear voters are too stupid to make decisions that really should be left to policy makers in the state legislature.

Show me how it's going to cost a lot of jobs. In the smallest tightest businesses/franchises people have family working, essentially working below minimum wage. For them, they'll get an increase in business from other working class people, so they'll do better.

Same for the franchises, the increase in wages cost is probably going to be nullified by increased sales. Also I really believe that people who do better financially can be more productive. If everyone received good wages we'd probably do a lot better as a society. This is a small step for the better. If it were up to me It'd be going up to $18 per hour before getting tied to inflation, and in a shorter time scale as well.

As for policy makers making the decisions instead of the voters, there's countries that work like that, China being a notable example. I think that western laws and society is actually self-evidently much better.
174  Other / Politics & Society / Florida $15/hr Miminum wage (Amendment 2) Passed! ($15/hr phased in 2026) on: November 05, 2020, 06:30:13 PM
Amendment 2 in Florida passed, It needed 60% of the vote and got 60.8

This means that hourly minimum wage in Florida will go to $15 in 2026.

September 30, 2021 it will go from 8.56 to 10, and then it will go up by $1 every year until it reaches $15 at which point it will be tied to inflation.

It won't affect me at all, (except maybe by raising the floor my job class might get a higher wage scale). But I'm happy for everyone who's wage cucking it at minimum wage at the moment.

Also I'm going to pay respects to all those in states without a minimum wage.

Looking at exit polls Biden should win Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Pennsylvania is not so certain.

This is probably skewed by mail-ins. Which should favor Biden even more.

Yup, most likely.

Trump has pulled through and will probably win Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Florida.

Pennsylvania will probably end up going to Trump.

Trump will probably win this race IMO. Betting markets have completely flipped on their head here. But I guess there's still a lot of time.

No Pennsylvania is 90%+ going to Biden. They just have to count the absentee ballots. 2.6 Million of them. We won't know until Friday.
176  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: November 04, 2020, 02:10:02 AM
I'm calling Florida for Trump

10% of votes remaining, he has a 3% lead.

(I'm assuming the early votes and mail in ballots were counted first)
177  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: November 04, 2020, 12:24:51 AM
Biden is ahead by 3% with over 50% reported in FL.
178  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Plastic barriers next to supermarket queues. on: October 29, 2020, 08:58:36 PM
You can smell gases. Gases can go through masks and everything

Particles, and particles that the virus is present on may be blocked by masks and other things.

It's been mentioned before in this thread but also the little bit of spit that comes of people will also be mostly stopped by the barrier. Than it will either dry on the plexiglass surface and the virus will die or it will be cleaned and the virus will die.

These measures have and will continue to save lives.

The biggest thing was lowering the spread in the beginning when everyone was vulnerable and this has been very successful. If more people had been infected all at once the medical establishment would have been completely overwhelmed.

It's good that Corona didn't come at a worse time, it's almost like a vaccine itself, preparing us for worse pandemics in the future.

In some supermarkets it's kind of a gimmick, but places like Costco did it the right way. When you're buying things there the cashier is protected like 99% of the time. Other grocery stores just put a little panel of plexiglass that the customer is behind for like 1 second out of potentially a 1 minute long interaction. These ones are just virtue signaling.

One final point gases will of course pass through masks and around barriers. Otherwise what the hell are you breathing? The smells in perfumes are gases not necessarily particulates.

179  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Dry Water Submersion for ASIC cooling? on: October 29, 2020, 05:53:51 PM
I haven't mined in years and I have never mined at scale. But if I had millions of dollars to start a mining farm, I'd submerge all the equipment in dry water, then I'd use heat exchangers by running it through a walk in freezer (dry water doesn't freeze until about -100c. The hardware itself and its heatsinks would be submerged in the dry water. Since it won't short out any of the circuits and it won't dissolve them it should function the same as air. Since the liquid would be very cold perhaps around -10c I could run the hardware really hard so I could get a lot more value out of them. The system would have to be closed so that none of the liquid or vapors escape.

I wonder if anyone is doing this in practice. Here's a video explaining dry water and it's properties. In the link I'll timestamp a place where a computer is submerged in it. The setup is only a demonstration and there is not even a heatsink in it and the liquid isn't being cooled so of course it heats up and doesn't work well.

https://youtu.be/cR4Mutf1kQg?t=757

Something interesting is that since dry water is heavier than water, you could cool the dry water by dropping ice cubes on the top layer or even running cold water over it and then out the top. The actual water would never touch the electronics. In theory you could have your mining equipment at the bottom of a cold lake. Or maybe at the bottom of a pool. The large water mass would never heat and in a cold climate the pool would always reject any heat given to it to the elements. I think something like colorado could be an ideal location. You build a deep pond or pool. You put the equipment under it. The pool will never completely freeze because the ice will insulate the top layer when it gets cold and the ground will remain hot enough to keep the rest from freezing. During the summer you cover part of the pool so that it doesn't heat up during the day, during the night the temperature will be low enough to cool everything.
180  Other / Off-topic / Re: The amount of people older than you never goes up! on: October 27, 2020, 07:05:41 PM
Of course the number of people who are older than you can never go up, unless you believe in resurrection. It's a pretty obvious fact, and is on a par with.

- It is a scientific fact that people who have more birthdays live longer.

I know it's kind of a water is wet thing but it's still crazy to think about.
