Reviewing the video from the start it does look like he may have filmed from the pier about 18 feet above sea level. I've clearly made a mistake in calculating the distance to the horizon based on standing on the beach.

I've made a mistake, and I admit I've made an error due to an assumption here. I post a lot of material and I'm bound to make a mistake once and a while.

How would you know that about the horizon? At three miles away, you can't tell if you are looking at the horizon, 6 feet above it, or 6 feet below it. And this is without the atmospheric distortion.

The horizon rises to eye level (my observation), this is consistent with perspective and convergence on plane and not consistent with a globe just as ILLUSTRATED.
