For sure this could be true as Leonardo Bonucci could have been a great asset for Union Berlin's success back then but because Union Berlin is on the verge of losing the 1st Division this season and they are currently not using him more often and as you have suggested that he got an argument with the new Coach of Union Berlin for sure he is not happy anymore so for sure he will accepts the offer of whoever wants him on their team,

The time from Hans-Joachim Watzke at Borussioa Dortmund will end in 2025. As the club announced today, he will not extend his contract and will no longer be a member of the management team next autumn in the next year. This will marks the end of a 20-year era.

Since leverkusen was placing at the first place and that's pretty naive to say that if their target would not be bundesliga. Any team in bundesliga was willing to win the trophy but this is being limited due to their capability to perform so well and consistent in bundesliga.
