A lot of people have an opinion about Bitcoin as something shady, something for the criminals. Where has this come from? Bitcoin is a rather new and exciting thing and also because of its pseudo anonymous qualities it will naturally attract the attention of people with shady intentions. Criminals may find this a great way for moving funds fast and your name will not be attached to the transaction.

Everything is/can be used for illegal activities. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing. How about making illegal all baseball bats because there are people that are using them to hurt people not just to play baseball. It's ridiculous.
No but you gotta admit that bitcoin is especially well designed for illegal and or immoral purposes... For the same reason it's a lot used in scams, it's probably used in weapons traffics and or prostituion/drugs. Just because it's an easy way to transfer value anonimously. |

I don't think BTC could ever match the US $ at that game. I remember reading once that 50% of all $20 bills have been used to take cocaine!
Besides, BTC's total market cap is only $6 billions. The money spent on drugs each single day is more than that.
In jails, people fight with kitchen forks, so just about anything can be used for illegal activities.

I mean you're saying not real anonymity, but you can't get tracked down through bitcoin unless you go through exchange and provide ID proofs! But even then, you'd just have to provide falsificated proofs and get all the cash you want. Bitcoin is far enough anonymous but also provides much more stability and value than any of those altcoins  |

Yep, bitcoin is definitely used for illegal activities. But as Lauda and others have pointed out, cash has been used for these same purposes for centuries. Every dollar and cent in your pocket has probably been used to buy drugs or weapons and everything else at some point, so this is not an issue that really should affect bitcoin.
I say should, because the press thinks it's got the scoop of the century by reporting shit like this.

It likely is, but so is almost every other country, I highly doubt the majority of Bitcoin transactions are due to illegal activities.

Simply because most countries have no precise legislation concerning it. I think the biggest use for it is gambling and trading but the fact is we need to accept that btc is here to stay and what gave it its foot hold was the darknet. Good or bad it has helped it get where it is today. I am only here because of a documentary that was basically saying how bad it was because people was buying illegal things with it. So what? The world is not a hunky dory place and the little impact btc has on illegal is almost funny. Its tiny in the schemes of things isnt it? |

We can think about it, we can talk about it. In my oppinion no one who is using Bitcoin for "illegal" activity will openly say this here  Rumours are rumours, there were some cases in the past where Bitcoin play a role. |

This is normal. And it will not hurt it. Actually I believe it helps Bitcoin on the long run. If this surprises you, all (or most) currencies are used also for criminal activities. The fact you hear about this in news, this helps. Because it's advertising. Because more people will hear about Bitcoin and more people will think it may help them in legal or illegal activities, more people will "give it a shot". The aim of Bitcoin is to become a coin, i.e. be used by as many people as possible. (And secondarily, this will boost Bitcoin price too.) |
