Hey, could you post a picture of the plug from the PSU and what brand/model the PSU was? I was reading around and it seems the PSU plug not being rated for the current could be the issue. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=62686.msg733782#msg733782Other posts in the thread help some. When you go past 2 cards you start to push limits on the 24 pin connector. I guess this is why so many cards use much less than 75W to be safe in multiGPU configurations, but clearly a lot of folks still end up with burnt 24 pin connectors. if your psu had the lower rating of 6A then max was 144 W for the 24pin. actually if you clean out the 24pin connector on the motherboard, it might still work fine. One thread online had a plug burn out and the system was fine with a different PSU. Worth a try and it would isolate the problem to the PSU plug not being rated high enough

They made a statement that they will "fix" 480 power issues via software (w/o details).
It can not be done by software at all, only was is to lower the clock and voltage, all the rest is lies from them, also to implement more robust and enforced TDP limits which also gona lower clock and voltage

It can not be done by software at all, only was is to lower the clock and voltage, all the rest is lies from them, also to implement more robust and enforced TDP limits which also gona lower clock and voltage wow. What a bold statement. Sounds like you think the way the driver controls the card is so dumb that they can't change anything but the settings users can change already.

Can anyone with the card test all other algos? Are the miners optimized yet?
Ethereum is the only profitable mining coin, so people will just use that for eth mining. That is the reason for all the tests in eth.

During winter I did run coolers for my cables. 6-pin baby is also easy to burn, I just can't remember wattage. 480 needs new bios.

480 needs to be replaced with a proper 8 pin model asap, new bios will not solve design flaw. Bios could solve it but not within specs. Software fix will downclock it. For me this looks like they were desperate. Bring in the 1060.

Not really, with modern PSU's they use 6+2 pin connectors and the configuration in either is rated for 150 watts. The +2 is for extra ground and really its pointless but they do it for safety incase of a extra discharge or something.

Everyone and amd thought they have a killer gpu. Then there was 1070. I guess a 6 pin gave the impression that it was very power efficient. If there is any spectacular sale for the 1070 on the 4th I might get it but otherwise I am waiting to see what the 470 and 1060 bring, or to see if some corrected 480 comes aroun

Not really, with modern PSU's they use 6+2 pin connectors and the configuration in either is rated for 150 watts. Also on 6pin one ground is used as sense so only two are operational, that why 8pin is a lot better! Anyway on mu home wiring was bad and one ground was lose, whole bridge melted and it was all ground!

Is it possible the pci power draw is an inherent flaw in the card design, or is it sure that it is not? Meaning, if revised drivers can't allocate more power to the reference card's 6 pin, then using an 8 pin for the newer non reference cards would actually do nothing?

For 6 or 8 pin to draw more power they must redesign VRM on PCB, but most customs cards from MSI, ASUS, Powercolor will do it and prolly use 8pin connector, even if they use 6pin their VRM design might use more power from the 6/8pin connector

If that is the case, there will not be overclocking of the 480 any more. They might limit the memory frequency to be below 2200MHz.

Ethereum is the only profitable mining coin, so people will just use that for eth mining. That is the reason for all the tests in eth. Keep in mind that not everyone is interested in eth mining. So has anyone noticed any benchmarks for other algos?

If that is the case, there will not be overclocking of the 480 any more. They might limit the memory frequency to be below 2200MHz. That could be case for the reference RX 480. Maybe the memory power is supplied by the PCIE slots.
