I have a four card build with 4 rx 480's
I have a four card build with 4 rx 480's
I have a two card build with 2 rx 470's
I have a two card build with 1 rx 480 + 1 rx 470

I will fill in more info later.

But special note  I have returned my rx 460 cards and do not think they are good for mining for the average miner.
I do like  rx 480  and rx 470 cards.

older r9 390 cards are good but power hungry
I avoid them due to my power costs.
I don't flash bios  as I am lazy maybe one day.

very compact unit for 95-100mh at 600 watts or so.



first step was a panel on mdf and a ¼ panel of plywood attach four feet
my cost was zero I had the panel from building speakers


drilled a hole for every mobo screw drilled 4 large holes for cpu screws this is if I want to do a bias aftermarket cooler in the future
drilled a circle hole to allow access to cpu plate

The 4mh Issue

in all of my cases  my 4mh issues  are not card specific  ie  one card would show 4mh  pull it put in a completely different card, in a different slot on mob and  still have a 4mh issue.

Example:  This is a different gpu in slot #3 - Same Problem:






I had this problem once. i think it was becuase the gpu is stuck at step 0 - 300mhz . I think i solved it by unhooking the monitor.

Connected to the Rig via Teamviewer, unplugged the monitor, rebooted........The Rig with all gpu's are running at 19.8mh each (I will now have to work on getting 19.8 up to 25-28mh).

The asrock has a $30 rebate now so it comes to 180, it also has 3 extra 1x slots if you want to switch to risers/ribbons and add more cards later you could go to 7 cards.
Aftermarket RX470/480 cards should run fine on plain ribbon cables cos they have the 8 pin pci-e connector.

Are any serial numbers or any other ways to spot the 8 pin power connection? 90% of cards do not have it written in their specs

I think as long as it's not a reference card (one fan, all boxed in) it should have an 8 pin but I could be wrong.

the biostar also allows for  extra cards  but  I am going riser less and staying at 4 cards on purpose for three reasons

1) It is nice and compact, BUT 2x6 card rigs are more compact than 3x 4 card rigs for the same number of 12 cards. Unless you live in a 150sq ft tiny house I don't see a point in saving a few inches..
2) It's actually more heat because for the same number of 12 cards you're running an extra rig, psu, cpu.
The more you maximze your cards per rig the more you increase the efficiency and reduce costs it seems.

Back to the 4xGPU configuration _ I have asked Phil about getting a suitable chassis for it.

I'm planning to get my current open rigs to be "racked" or put into proper chassis for ISP hosting.

I'm paying too much for power and hosting my mini farm will be a viable choice.

Upon more investigation.... 4 x GPU config like Biostar and ASrock, will need a FULL TOWER chassis.

A full tower chassis is around 99-149$ USD -- full ATX tower, maxed for 4 GPU.

Mid towers seems fit only for 3xGPU Z170 ATX.

I am not even going to explore 6xGPU custom configs like Gray Matter type chassis - easily 300-400$USD each.

Even generic brand full tower or server rack style chassis is about 200-300 $ at AliExpress.

If anyone has some suggestions - appreciate it for discussions.

This case should fit 4 cards, each being 2x wide.  Not a bad price (~$60).

Have you looked into hosting a PC?  I guess I've never thought about it.  I have my S7s hosted at Oregon Mines.  I suppose I see no reason they would not host a PC.  It would need to come up and automatically mine upon startup.  Turn off automatic updates, if running windows.  Time to go linux?

 Or save a few more $ by going LINUX - once you get the first machine up and running, it's TRIVIAL to "clone" a working setup using DD to copy the working HD setup to another one, or if you make it small enough clone it to a USB flash drive.



 There are a few smaller cases that can handle 4x dual slot boards - but the lowest cost ones I've been able to find were $60 and up on Newegg, and tend to not have really great cooling setups, or were quite a bit MORE expensive to get one with a good cooling setup - and you NEED to add better fans even on the "good cooling setup" cases to get adaquate airflow for a 4xGPU machine which drives the price up a good bit more.



 2 x 6 card rigs usually end up taking MORE total space than 3 x 4 card rigs CAN take, as the risers and their cables soak quite a bit of space.
 They also tend to be a bigger pain to set up, and reliability isn't as good a lot of the time.
