Every time I go to the bank I like to ask them if they have heard of BTC, most of the time the answer is no. I do ask a lot of people about BTC.. a restaurant near me.. near ish use to accept it as well, I asked to pay with it, they said it no longer exists.. .... ...
Most people I find still have zero idea what BTC is unless they are friends with the likes of us.. I don't think we are even in early adoption stage.. we are in "the chasm" .. it would appear we are going to survive though... appear anyways..
I dunno just something I have taken note of.
Pretty much everyone that has heard of it assumes it's worth like 5 cents and shits themselves when I say it's $1k (Cad) .. we are in very interesting times with BTC.
This is not the first time it will happen not the last time also. Bitcoin is popular no doubt, but to assume every one is on board with it is not good. People just don't understand it and it's not difficult to understand why. There's not much marketing done for it, it's limited to users who have known it. Yes now trend is changing but it's yet to grow. Once all banks globally use it, then yes but till then it's a distant dream. So don't be surprised next time.

We could argue all day about the advantages and disadvantages of Bitcoin over the beaten to death traditional banking system but the truth is that Bitcoin is, for the moment, a niche product. If people watch the news they have probably heard about it already for a brief moment and that's it. Not everyone understands how it works, though. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing because everyone is free to use whatever form of money they wish be it digital or paper. For example, if you walk up to random guys in the street and ask them if they watch soccer most of the time they would say yes but not always. Now if you ask them if they can say the names of all the footballers in the first team of their favorite football club not all of the people who have said 'yes' could name a single footballer. The same is with Bitcoin. Interested individuals will make the effort to learn more, but the majority wouldn't care much if at all.

Do you really ask a lot of people about it? I always assume most over 40 doesn't know Or most under 25's in my country. Since Bitcoin were popularized by MLM company here, those who was introduced in bitcoin were late late 20's and above because they are the people who have the capacity to invest. Even early adopters of bitcoin in my country are not young adults. Reason, they don't have the capacity to buy mining rigs to mine bitcoin that time.

I live in a small island and i truly believe that i am the only one who knew and used bitcoin. I always heard from media that bitcoin is popular, in reality bitcoin is not popular especially in my country, i could say 1 in 1 million people knows bitcoin. This isn't strange for me, in my country most of people don't know about Bitcoin, but I think this case differ from country to other, if you went to China or Brazil, you might see a lot of Bitcoin adopters and users.
i am not sure about that. china and brazil are populated with a big number of people. so if let us say 100,000 people know about bitcoin in Brazil and 100,000 in china. the for every one that knows about bitcoin you will meet 2,000 people in brazil that do not know it. and in china it would be even over 1 in 10,000. so when you are going door to door to ask about bitcoin you will have a hard time there, unless you stumble into a bitcoin meeting. Seriously you can't compare bitcoin's enthusiast in china where the population are more than 1,357 billions people. Well i might say that bitcoin is not popular now, however bitcoin is immature, i truly believe in 100 years later people in the rest of the world will know bitcoin.

I see that majority of voices in this thread say that we are in the early stage of adoption/innovation/after bug fixing period and great time will come.
Why are so sure about it when even top bitcoin figures don't believe this future?
Some examples: Mike Hearn, former bitcoin developer - "Bitcoin is a failed experiment"
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire - "Nobody will be using bitcoin in 5 to 10 Years"
Why ordinary people should follow when leaders have no faith?
Maybe because "640k ought to be enough for anybody"? These people may be just plain wrong, and I guess I don't even have to say that they might have an agenda. In fact, I don't know them altogether, and it might well be the first time that I read their names (I'm not very good on remembering names, to be honest). On the other hand, the same Bill Gates who allegedly said that 640k would be enough for anybody, had been saying as back as in 1995 that he "saw little commercial potential for the Internet for the next 10 years" and that he "didn't know how to spell that"

Well, it's not $1k anymore but yes, Bitcoin costs more than any other currency and still there aren't many people who know anything about it. It is sort of sad but at the same time if they all new, maybe btc would now be in taxes and without anonymity, because the governments would need to react on it and somehow make it legal.

in real world and in our city, not every people knows about bitcoin, maybe only few people with have often online. they just think what is that? they don't even think that bitcoin can help you to make money by investing your money and maybe they will think that your investing will be scam you in someday. its happen to me too in my city but i don't care, as long as i don't bother them, so i will continue with bitcoin.
and if you have spare time, maybe you can make some quiz or research in your city, and the question is "do you know about bitcoin?" so you can know how much people will know about bitcoin.

@OP I agree with your position and its even general and not specific to your location. Over here the popularity is growing but not in the right direction in my own opinion because majority of people I know sees it as a way to make quick bucks and cash out without even really understanding the potentials that comes along with and the most annoying part is when you get to explain, they tend to show no reaction at all as whatever you think you know is gibberish to them...

what makes bitcoin costs more than any other currencies? i guess the fees which is required for every transaction is just about few cents or maybe you're talking or reffering about the price of bitcoin which are now quite expensive but hey bitcoin have decimal amount or even smaller units called mbtc, satoshi, and ubtc you can just buy and match the amount of bitcoin with your budget easily

I asked "Whether here available onsite bitcoin to buy stuff? A cashier then said" sorry from, whether bitcoin is it? why I asked about bitcoin to a mini market that, Because According to a survey on the Internet saying that a mini market in the country I've been working with the company selling bitcoin in my country. but the reality is still a lot of mini markets that have not received the bitcoin as a payment.

Not everyone but many already heard it in somewhere. Steam did a major work in this. Most of the gamers (which is mostly formed by geeks) know what a bitcoin is atm. People who farm farm farm and sell their shit on diablo/wow/dota or any other rpg's will kill this. They'll see it as a game

Bitcoin adoption is still very low even among active educated internet users, the idea looks abstract to most of them, it takes me time go get to convince one of my educated friends to get the concept, though the investment in Bitcoin ATM is indeed helping

They'll see it as a game I agree that Steam helped a bit promoting BTCs on their site because they are accepting it as payment method now. But I believe most population on the Earth doesn't know about Bitcoins yet, maybe heared about, but they don't know exactly what is Bitcoin or how does it work. There is a long way until everyone knows about Bitcoin... But sites like Steam can help us to complete this goal faster. If more sites start accepting BTCs it will be amazing and helpful

No they don`t, we are in similar situation, all of us here. You are one step further then me, I don`t ask such questions in banks, restaurants, etc, I ask people I know, and people I introduce here and there in one part of conversation I add bitcoins in our talk. Most people never heard about it, some people that heard about it its just one little part about bitcoins, they know its some "internet money, or something like that". From all this people some like to listen about bitcoins, some of them don`t, generally I didn`t found someone ready to work for bitcoins, to come here on forum and to try to build some rank. For them earning is too low, they don`t wish to learn and to slowly rise their bitcoin income trough various ways.

Pretty much everyone that has heard of it assumes it's worth like 5 cents and shits themselves when I say it's $1k (Cad) .. we are in very interesting times with BTC.
yeah I agree with you , there are many people who have no idea about bitcoin in some cases even countries don't have idea at all , literally I don't know anyone in my country who is using bitcoin except me I didn't buy bitcoin , I built my bitcoins online from zero and I'm now kinda satisfied so yeah at this stage it's not even early adoption

I believe it is so different from one country to another. in some places there are a lot of talk about bitcoin and you can even see bitcoin in the streets and in everyday places you go like a train station when you are buying a ticket! so obviously a lot more people would have heard about bitcoin already! but in some other countries there isn't even a proper place to exchange bitcoin with fiat and back. so this also obviously shows in those places far less people have heard about bitcoin. I believe the only thing that can change this is more merchants accepting bitcoin and showing the famous "bitcoin is accepted here" sign.

It's the same in my country. We don't have many BTC users, and just a few merchants accept Bitcoin offline. In whole country we have just 2 BTC ATM. Most people don't know about bitcoin and don't care, honestly. In fact, many people are even scared to use Internet banking or to pay for something online. I hope that this situation will change but it will not happen overnight.
