A plot of the ratio of prices MtGOX / Bitstamp since sep/2013:

http://www.ic.unicamp.br/~stolfi/temp/2013-09-01--2014-01-30-MGOX-BSTP-ratio.png

The prices are weighted mean prices in each 1-hour interval, obtained from http://bitcoincharts.com/

The labels on the X-axis are approximate months of 2013; "13" is jan/2014.

Very interesting. Based on this and the Gox orderbook, the Gox price is going to become more inflated than ever fairly soon (IMO). What kind of scenarios can anyone think of that would actually cause the Mt.Gox price to go down?

I confess.  I haven't paid much attention to MtSux for a while, but has that ~$9 spread been the norm lately?

did you leave off a 0? its been up to $200 difference.

Gox is in full ponzi mode, they cant get btc or fiat out.

Sorry.  Wasn't very clear was I?  Meant to say that the bid/ask spread was ~9 bucks and hadn't noticed it for a while.  So ... has it been that much of a spread for a while?

edit:  I see it is about 2 bucks now.

edit 2: now its at 5 bucks.  wtf?

Yeah he was doing stuff like this in 2011 when it was $12/BTC and silver was $50/oz. if bitcoin hits $2,000, I expect him to either switch to full drink-the-cool-aid bull or for his head to explode.

Looking at the price charts one would think that MtGOX is very active.  However the Chartbuddy plots of its order book (the rightmost one in each pair),

show that nothing significant is happening there, for hours on end.  In those charts one can see that the "real" spread is usually large (10-20 USD).  However, there are some small transactions and orders bouncing up and down within the spread.  It is those transactions that make the MtGOX 1-minute price chart look like a broad hatched stripe. (In contrast, the Bitstamp 1-minute chart looks like a wriggly line.)

Breaking that 790-820 range feels impossible now

Do you mean that the price could not go up, or could not go down?  Or can't break out of that range?

I really have no idea, all 3 meanings fit your statement.

It's just Mark playing with himself (or maybe his bots).

I doubt anyone other than him uses that site anymore.

Very likely.

What's your opinion on the outcome with gox?  Do you think he is smart enough to sell the exchange to someone who would run it right?  Is there someone who would take the job on?

Can we blame him fully, does the time it takes to remedy seized u.s bank accounts have a known time frame by anyone? I admit I was happy to find Canadian based exchanges with good reputation it regards to the ability to withdraw sales in fiat.

That sux.

at least he will never visit the usa in his life. i still half expect he will get departed here anyway for laundering drug trafficking money. once the feds get all the info he has to share they wont need his narcing ass anymore.

I remember you mentioning something about this before.  So, it's likely that he rolled over on some of the, say, SR bunch?  Maybe on DPR?
