Oh fuck, a positive cnbc article? Sell .. Sell ... Sell ... or was it another media station, which causes a decline, when they talk positive about btc?!

I remember 56k damn that thing was slow!

Not as slow as 300 baud.  Cool

Sparta grabbed the meme for $300. Will we post pictures of dial-up modems for $56k?

My first Model was a 28.8k High Speed Machine ...

Btw... Watch the movie hackers. They talk about super fast 28.8k Modems Cheesy

My first 300 baud modem didn't even connect automatically.

You had to listen for the modem at the other end and manually flip a switch.

Ah, those were the days... cassette tape i/o, command line UI, system RAM measured in kilobytes, saving up to buy a FDD controller and drive... but we felt so cutting edge at the time... kinda like Bitcoin a few years back.

My first computer ... Robotron KC 85/3 (Made in GDR)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KC_85

Mine was a Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K. Made in the UK. Featured here in an earlier post. Still have it (complete with box, PSU and "Horizons" cassette tape). Still working (last time I checked, 30 years ago).

Yes, same here with the phone line until my mother foudn out, if they use the phone to call someone, I was thrown out of my modem connection ... damn in the middle of an "important" download XD...

I was in the middle of a doom deathmatch, was about to fire, and ... click!

For awhile, back in the old modem days, I was able to tell if it connected at 56k or at 28.8k (or slower) just by listening to the whishy noise it makes, sort of like white noise with beeps. There was an audible beep tone that told me I connected at 56k.

Then cable came along. Then DSL. Today it's Fiber to the home. I also remember a T1 connection at one school I attended before.

Two old movies I still recommend:
1. Hackers = young Angelina Jolie (breaking OPSEC, I used a handle CooLzie a long time ago, on a "very bad online service", before this movie came out.)
2. Sneakers = ... probably more old school and better story

I just hope we have enough time to prepare...

Yeah, still got such an acoustic coupler (a dataphon like in the picture) with a turbo switch for 1200baud (otherwise it would go 300baud IIRC), though the plastic in the middle has dissolved.

On some bbs' you had first to convince some mum or dad to put the handset on the coupler when junior was at school.

Though to be fair, it was much easier for combined use with the captain crunch whistle  Grin

I ran a small POP with 16 dialup lines literally from my bedroom in the early 90s. I could not only tell the exact speed most of the times but also the brand (USR, Zyxel, Elsa etc.) also literally while sleeping.

No need to download the chain just to sign a msg?

No. But there's a fair wait while the UI becomes available. I've upgraded my CPU since then so might be worth another go.

There are charts from other Twitter peeps, PlanB, Woo-something ... if all ChartBuddy did was post numbers, there wouldn't be much to censor. That and Jack Dorsey runs a full node.

It's more a principled stand.

500 € on Kraken currently.

Mine was actually the '81. My dad convinced me I should trade it in for an Acorn Atom which was definitely a mistake. The Spectrum corrected that. I eventually sold and upgraded to a variety of them over the years but have since reacquired from boot sales. And now there's the Spectrum Next.

On Wandavision recently, they used a modem and I noticed they made the effort to use the shorter tones that would have been appropriate to the time rather than the longer negotiation which came later.

Finally got around to watching Hackers last month. Definitely worth a watch.

I gave mine as a present to my cousin, but after a few years I got it back as he was about to throw it away... It was working fine then, but I haven't powered it up since. We're talking 30 years ago... Thinking of re-capping the PSU and main board just to be on the safe side, but I also feel the urge to take the risk and power it up as-is.

Good times.

Mine powered up just fine but I haven't found a really satisfactory way to output the video. Many modern TVs don't take the funky version of PAL it outputs, most notably our main TV.

We sold mine to my cousin. I carefully sorted all my tapes into two piles, one to keep, one to go. When I got home from school, both piles had gone Sad
