Why not stack them according to the design? The front page shows a schematic.
I still want to 'stack' them in a cube: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=223680.msg2362815#msg2362815![](https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2Fp3iOxVbl.png&t=663&c=tb5bJ7xKRUiI7w) In that cube fans are positioned to ensure good airflow both inside the heatsink tunnel, and over the top of the boards. It's a Klondike design, but I think it can work here, too. Noob question: Where do you run the cables through? ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I ordered chips for a Bitburner X 4 weeks ago.
If it turns out there will not be a 10 chip model anymore I'm screwed.
why not buy some additional chips? They are cheap at the moment and a 20 chip model will be much more efficient and cost- effective. I've been trying to buy 10 chips from SebastianJu's 5th batch to complete a XX, with no success. If I order any new chips they will come from the 6th batch which have not been ordered from Avalon yet. It doesn't make sense having 10 chips 'wait around' for another 10 to come from the following batch. I'm better off selling the 10 I've ordered and start again. All I need is assurance that the 10x model is going ahead as per the first post. I've asked three times now, just need a yes/no! The chips are chained by 5x5 as i read. So stacking 10 chips on a 20 board should be no problem. (and then you can add later should you want to, batch 6 is ordered the other day).

You're on the right track, but the risk is mechanical, not thermal. We're not dealing with a huge amount of heat here like you would get with a high end CPU or GPU, and the temperature differential won't do anything exciting. (Unless you were totally bonkers and were using liquid nitrogen or something... badideadontdoit)
These chips are just designed to cool from the bottom, not the top. You can't turn screws with hammers, use the right tools for the job.
What about complete submerging in mineral oil? And then cool the oil in a big radiator. No stress to the chip, and cooling from both bottom and top.

Maybe a third value on top so that one could calculate how higher overclocking will turn out. By the way... will the miner stop working when the chips overheat? For example when a fan breaks or so. Not that the chips die a hot death then only.

Check with the man himself. A few days back he was clear he won't do partial assembly - but on the plus side confirmed he will do 10. However, will you have to wait for a Bitburner X or get an underpopulated BitBurner XX? Only one man knows the answer to that. I can buy 15 chips more from zefir and I'm not sure if it is possible for a 20 chip board to work with only 15 chips placed on it. Basically Im asking if it can work underpopulated and add later 5 chips more.
I won't do partial assembly, either 10 or 20.

As far as i understood the board works with 10 or 20 chips. Not with any other number. There are 2 groups of 10 chips each. Thats why both boards are nearly the same price i guess. A bitburner x is only a bitburner xx with 1 instead both 10-chip routes enabled. Agreed, it should work as a '10 on a 20 board' but I just need to be sure.

Implemented Temperature monitoring today and tested Overclocking capabilities a bit. 20x 256Mhz = 5.120Ghash/s - 36 Watts 142Mhash/W 20x 320Mhz = 6.400Ghash/s - 50 Watts 128Mhash/W
Serious question to the overclockers: how do you determine your profitability? i.e. why bother if the efficiency drops off a cliff? More efficient is better, right? Thinking about it, I guess you could look at the ROI on the extra output against the power overhead. By that I mean the first 5.1 Gh/s cost you 36W, the next 1.3 cost you 14W so whilst that is profitable at electricity and difficulty levels then its worth doing. When its not, don't. But how much is sensible to invest in cooling to achieve higher rates? Is there a rule of thumb? You'd need to work out an ROI and set a profit expectation. Has anyone looked at this? I see it a bit different. Look at the costs of mining gold. The people who invested tons say 10 years ago, and stuck to their gold until today, are wealthy people today (look at gold increase past 10 years). The ones who mined, and sold it all, made much less. So sell as little as possible is my strategy, potentially invest in asicminer shares, and increase your rig to get more coins as you increase your hold. That being said, as someone said, the more hashpower i can get, for a slight increase in cost, is irrelivant for me. I intend to stock the coins as much as i can and join upcoming generation chip (avalon 2?, BFL, bitfury) group buys when they come available (to be part of first batches)..

You know this for a fact? Yes the chips are logically organised in chains, but initial discussions were quite clear there would be two boards. Hence why I say, check with the man himself.

Its how the cgminer works i believe. Also, initially he tested the board with only one chip, same thing with klondike k16.

The first the larger Bitburner XX hosting 20 chips, and then a smaller PCB holding 10 chips. The analogy is that if I want a klondike k16, I wouldn't expect to receive a k64 with only one of the segments populated. I think Burnin maybe hasn't been clear on his strategy here. In the early days after he switched to the larger XX design due to the high demand I recall there was talk that the XX would come first, and the X later. I don't recall an official update since.

There's been no mention of the X version for some time now so I'm getting concerned, hence why I've asked a few times if the plans are still going ahead.

@Burnin Greate news with the overclocking ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) #### Hey guys, which power supply are you guys planing to use? Are there any favorites? What about this Thermaltake? http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_000018121475w @ 12V <-> 26 Boards @ 55watt Are there any Experience with this high power supply for FPGAs? Or is it better to use 2 weaker PSUs? How deep are your 19" Racks (32inch / 40inch) ? - for the Users of the Si-System = 0,8/1m) Thank you Regards Finn

Anyway... burnin has confirmed via PM that there will be 1 board. 10 chip versions are available by using Bitburner XX boards that are 'semi populated'. Thanks for the PM burnin, keep up the great work.

will the 10 chip board coast like the 20 chip board?
if so, it will be very expensive.
