Frizz23, I thought that it would require a few milliseconds for a block to propagate through the network. Regards. spiccioli Arrived! It took 23 minutes ?!? Why so long? Does the generation block require a few more blocks to distribute its reward? Does it wait for 6 confirmations before being distributed to all miners? In the mean time... another one block found right now! 2012-02-08 17:02:26.547736 GOT BLOCK FROM PEER! Passing to bitcoind! 93be805e bitcoin: 45b373f38ffbb7e4b2da40bd36a81435f8b8c5c2be72a5d119d
It seems we're getting back our good luck spiccioli.

I apologize if this is answered up-thread, but I couldn't come up with adequate search terms... Why does my "Recent" hash rate as reported by the P2Pool client vary so much? Over a day or so it has varied from less than 1GH/s to over 4GH/s as it was a few minutes ago: 2012-02-08 08:17:19.385786 Pool: 200GH/s in 17376 shares (17380/17380 verified) Recent: 2.19% >4381MH/s Shares: 534 (23 orphan, 15 dead) Peers: 43 (33 incoming) 2012-02-08 08:17:19.385871 Average time between blocks: 0.34 days 2012-02-08 08:17:19.386103 Pool stales: 9% Own: ~7% (5-10%) Own efficiency: ~102% (99-104%)
The variation is slow, i.e., it takes time to move much. The rate reported by cgminer is about 2GH/s: cgminer version 2.2.3 - Started: [2012-02-06 18:30:16] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (5s):1824.7 (avg):2183.0 Mh/s | Q:84788 A:25842 R:692 HW:0 E:30% U:11.35/m

Why does my "Recent" hash rate as reported by the P2Pool client vary so much? I think that is calculated based on how many recent shares have been accepted by P2Pool so it varies over time based on your personal "luck". Mine is currently at 0 This is because even though I'm running about 750Mhs, I haven't found a single share in 12+ hours.... At least we hit 4 blocks this morning but I'd be a lot happier if it wasn't after a half day stale period for me, I got shit payouts.

You might have been lucky... As far as I understand it, 2.19% of the past 17376 shares were done by you.
In theory, you'd need ~4.4 GH/s for that.
In practice, you could do it even by hand with a calculator or Excel if you are extremely lucky with your nonces.

So I used to use one address, then I switched to a different one for the last four blocks. However, the payouts are going to both of my two addresses and are split 50/50. How come?

In 12 hrs you should have a few K shares submitted moreover you have 750mh/s not 7.5 mh/s.

You still had valid shares submitted using the old payout address. I'm assuming you switched in the past 24 hours? I think about 24 hours ago. But surely I submitted many more shares with my current address than the previous one. Don't know how it ended up being exactly 50-50 between my two addresses. Anyhow it is probably OK.

Anyway, yes over this time I have had many, many thousands of shares submitted according to cgminer but not a single "Share found!" in P2Pool. /shrugs Everything appears to be running just fine, I was just assuming really bad luck. And BAM as I type this we hit another block. That's 5 for today. Guess I can't be too upset but damnit I'm at my lowest payout rates since I've started P2Pool.

Five blocks in five hours, and of course my mining rig had to break down ~10 hours before the first one...
Well, hopefully this completely random series of events that are in no way indicative of future results will convince more people to switch to P2Pool.

this completely random series of events that are in no way indicative of future results Can I save this for the next time someone posts something like "I've been mining on p2pool for 10 minutes and I would have got twice* as much from MegaPool (* less fees)"?

That was a long time ago. In other news, we had 6 blocks today, at a 1 per hour average.

Ah ok thanks for explaining (and Gavin).
The question still stands though: if there still donations being made I'm curious how the process works. Is it incorporated in the normal payout?

Maybe someone added a 500Gh/s server farm, and has been extremely unlucky for submitting P2Pool shares (keeping visible P2Pool hash rate low), but extraordinarily lucky for submitting shares that are valid overall?

Small miners are put in a lottery, so if you are < 1GH you will probably only very rarely get a donation, but it will be disproportionately large. For example this address won once at the top. http://blockexplorer.com/address/1H17sTGj2jLwxMKhyKTXWYUhHZdVS7x7kR

Do you see your address in the output of: http://forre.st:9332/patron_sendmany?total=1How about in the output of: http://forre.st:9332/patron_sendmany?total=10000If you address is in the second one but not the first one, then I believe that is because of the small miner lottery. In order to prevent lots of tiny payments, the donation code takes all the people who would have received only a very small donation payment, adds up all those payments, and awards the entire amount to one of those small miners randomly. "Small Miner" depends on the size of the donation. If someone is donating 1 BTC at a time and the pool hashrate is 200GH/s, and the small payment cutoff is 0.01, then you have to have approx 2GH/s to not fall into the "small miner" bucket. If someone donates 10 BTC in one fell swoop, then you only need to have 200 MH/s in order to be above the 0.01 payment cutoff. P.S. The default cutoff is 0.01, but people doing donation can choose a different one by adding it to the URL with a '/'. For example, here is a 1 BTC donation with a 0.001 cutoff instead: http://forre.st:9332/patron_sendmany?total=1/0.001

Proofer: If you upgrade to a more recent version of P2Pool (see first post in thread), the local hash rate estimation is much more accurate now, because it doesn't just use shares.
wachtwoord: The weird number just comes from the P2Pool difficulty changing over time, so each share is worth a slightly different amount. When combined together, you get weird numbers for the payouts.
