I think the best option is starting trading in big exchange like Polo, Bittrex because most of the coins listed there will always have some good volume. So before investing into any coin do research otherwise you will end up in the loss.

You'd still only double your investment, which isn't so special. You should invest 300 in bitcoin, and 200 in 10 alts like dimecoin. You could easily buy 4 million dimecoin for 20$ as its value is even less than 1 sat/coin. All it needs is a little push and you could get a 10x ROI from a mere 20$ investment.

500 usd is only 0.12 btc. It is low amount of money for crypto world.
If i had only 500 usd to invest i would make a risky all in choosing a project that is not known by many people but with a good team. And at the same time i would focus on airdrops and bounty programs to gain some profits for my future investments.

If that is what he has then he will have to make it work, probably the best strategy is to invest in a solid ico, if he does that and the coin skyrockets then in a few years that 0.12BTC could be something close to 12BTC if the coin goes 100x in value and he holds the entire time, which is not a bad profit if you ask me.
