It's not 0.5 Amps per miner, it's 0.51 Watts.   Cool
I'm afraid you are mistaken.

Where does that "0.51W" come from?

But, on second thought, looks like the first one actually might power up to 19 devices.

Assuming 100% efficiency of converting 12v to 5v.

And, that I did the math correctly to convert 12v4A to 5v9.6A.  Smiley

What math?

The monoprice has 4A@5V power supply.
The anker one has 4A@12V power supply.

What is your point?  Other than to disagree with yourself?

USB 3.0 might be a better way to go
Irrelevant.

The USB miners will (I assume) self identify as USB 2.x devices. As such, the hub, if properly designed, will limit each device to 500mA. Which isn't the problem. Aggregate power draw is the issue.

That other hub you linked has the same constraint of 4A max. Same power envelope as the first one. Seven miners max. And the form factor looks far less conducive to cooling.
"What is your point?  Other than to disagree with yourself?"
My point, is to have a factually correct discussion.

Thank you for pointing out that I didn't notice the 4@5 versus 4@12 difference between the two units. My mistake.

"What math?"

Watts = Volts X Current (Amps)

If we stick with the same units, the monoprice claims 4A@5V. That spec will power 8 (minus overhead) miners.

If we must convert, for the anker at 4A@12V we must convert that that to xA@5V.

Solve for x.

-- edit

Which is what you did in order to agree with me: "The anker one should deliver ~960 mA to each USB port."

... The monoprice has 4A@5V power supply. ...
Where did you find that 4A@5V spec, please. I can't find it on the monoprice page.
That would be underpowered for a 24 port hub.

My bet is that it, also, has a 4A@12V power supply. If so, I would much prefer the monoprice over the anker due to the form factor for cooling.

Do you have any Erupters running?  I was wondering how much heat they generate.  Do I need to worry about external fans to cool them down?
No. <lol> No one but friedcat and arklan have any running so far.  Smiley

Report from friedcat is that they can overheat and stop running. But they recovered OK after cooling down. (And he may have done that test on one without a heat-sink. I don't recall.)

IIRC, arklan reported that they ran "too hot to touch" with pure passive cooling. After adding a small, I presume, fan they ran at a 'reasonable' to the touch level.

Don't forget Kano, he has one.
Yep, I forgot Kano.
Mustn't do that.  Cheesy

Look at of the images, it has a picture of the power supply.
Thank you.

Yep, that's hard data that the monoprice hub cannot support it's 24 ports at full USB 2.x spec.

I guess it'll all come down to the dimensions of the USB Eruptors.

If they are thin enough to leave a sufficient gap between them on a given 'inline' USB hub, then a single 120mm fan running at low speed would suffice to keep them cool enough.

IMO / the bet I would make.

ASICMiner has not posted the physical dimensions as part of the published specifications. That I can find.

Guess we'll just have to wait until we have them in hand or someone is kind enough to measure theirs and post the numbers.

So does this hub http://www.amazon.ca/Adapter-Anker%C2%AE-Uspeed-Button-included/dp/B005NGQWL2/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1369673158&sr=8-15&keywords=usb+3+hub run 10 usb miners at full power with a fan to keep them cool? What are your thoughts on this one at http://www.amazon.com/Satechi-10-Port-Port-iPad-Charging/dp/B00B9KOCYA/ref=zg_bs_281413_23 which states 5V5A?  Can 9 be safely run?  Which one would be better? Thanks for your help.

oh, and here's a shot of the boys working away. the LED blinking on a share found (green, btw) is surprisingly unintrusive.

and a shot of BFGminer. (i've yet to get cgminer working with them. waiting on kano's new code.)

What usb hub is this one arklan was using? Is it a 2.0 hub? Will a powered 2.0 hub be adequate or should we use a powered 3.0 hub instead?

Why not try some very short usb extender cables?  It won't look as nice, but would allow you to space them out more.

the hub i'm using in that picture is the much discussed 12 port usb hub from saitechi. it wouldn't power more then 3 erupters. i've got an anker 10 port usb 3.0 now (and two more en route) running five of them plus the fan and my cell phone charger no problem.

fyi, the fan in question is a 120mm fan.

regarding the box: i just got off the phone with dhl. i can go pick it up in the morning, they open at 9:30 am...

tomorrow's a busy day for me... post office run for the canadian packages first, then i have an appointment (unrelated) at ten, then off to DHL's office (which is an hour away, mind) THEN i can start packing everything... i also have a class in the evenings. oi...

i will, obviously, have time ot get some of them packed and ready to ship, which i'll take to the post office, but all? i don't expect it. wednesday though for sure.

i don't post much, but this space for rent.

...
No, I wouldn't expect that to happen either.

Just too much to do and the day is too short.

So, practically, I'm hoping to get mine early next week.

So this is my first asic/fpga miner. Is there a quickstart guide?

- dl bfgminer
- configure bfgminer to target pool
- plug in
- profit

?

Pretty much.

Although,
1) while I've seen that cgminer is reported to work with these, I don't recall if the same has been said for bfgminer. (Due to other considerations, I'm intending to use MPBM.)

2) Reduce all power consumption as much as possible for maximum long term gains. Lots of people use a Raspberry Pi to meet this goal.

3) Don't expect much profit. It will be months, if ever, before these critters hit ROI at the price we've paid for them.

And regarding "?", are you intending to use a Linux or MS Windows machine? Different headaches depending on which way you swing.

i actually couldn't get cgminer to work, but did get bfgminer (with luke's help) working. windows 7, btw.

ty, arklan.

So there's your solid software info, thoughtcourier.

arklan reports bfgminer running, perhaps with some hoops to jump through, on Windows.

friedcat's statement on the official stats thread says cgminer works. (friedcat probably used Linux, is my guess.)

i should clarify: it's the latest exe from git, with options -G -S all

course the -G just disables video card mining, so may not be needed in your case. i have a strange Franken-PC with an amd card AND an nvidia one, so mining on one of those but not the other presented complications.
