It would be crazy to have asked the victim to marry the rapist.

In India for the past few years there are many rape incidents happen and there are no safely young women in this country. The rapists are not even punished and are left freely. I do not know how will the victims lead their life after such incident has happen in their life. In some countries, the rapists are let off freely if they marry the victim. It is good thing you are concerned about rape issues in India. Far more so, than muslims in any of their own countries.

You see, in Islam, it is only called rape, if the victim has atleast four witnesses. There were also examples of western women jailed for reporting rape - since arab courts decided, that women had sex outside of marriage and therefore they were the criminal.

So no, muslims present no good example.

Neither do some of the western progressive countries where man accused of crime is guilty until proven innocent.

I wonder about situation in eastern Europe and/or eastern Asia. Those may have found some sort of balance.

Rape is a severe crime that needs the harshest punishment. It doesn't only wrecks a woman's body but also her spirit and it will be with her for the rest of her life. It should be up there with other heinous crimes and must be meted with the capital punishment that a country allows

Exactly. Marrying a rapist to a victim is only a way, that flawed (fundamentalist islamist) system is trying to save face over the whole deal. It is ex post legalizing the entire act of violence.

If you automatically give all rapists the most severe sentence (either death sentence or life depending on country) you may encourage rapists to kill their victims, their sentence won't get any worse, and they don't want to let their victim identify them.  

That's true.
The punishment should be removal from society. The rapists pictures should be all over the newspapers, TV and the Internet. He should be well known everywhere he goes or tries to work. I think the longer the punishment the more severe it becomes. In 5 or 10 years he'd be a wreckage.

I have to even pity the rapists and reason why I pity them is how compulsive and degenerated they are before commit such crimes. I think the punishment that must be given for the rapist  is death penalty. So that, the people who will intend to do so will have a
reason for not doing it.

I believe this is mostly in Muslim countries now. Most countries, whether they heavily punish the rapist, would not allow it to marry its victim.

If there is proof beyond reasonable doubt that the person raped the victim, it should be the most humiliating and harsh penalty that must be given. Rape is no petty crime, you violated an individual, a human. If you are capable of that, you are capable of far worse crime.

Frankly, I think death is not enough. I remember reading a book and read there that in ancient Rome, the husband of a woman who had an affair had the option to sodomize the wife's lover. As expected, the husbands got creative. There was one case that the husband used a fish. And this was in public, for everyone to see.

So I'd say one instance of public humiliation, a few rounds of torture, and then solitary confinement for life.

In one respect, if found guilty of rape, society as a whole is better off without rapists and death seems reasonable.  But in another respect, the things that have caused someone to enjoy raping a woman are cultivated by the surrounding environment.  Things like being in a sexually repressive culture can cause odd behaviours.  Anyone that rapes another person lacks empathy, likely because that person wasn't showed and taught empathy in his childhood.

That is not an excuse though. So what if it was a sexually repressive society, don't these men have mothers and sisters? I don't think this is just about repression, rape is still present in countries considered sexually liberal like the US. Some men just resort to getting what they want whatever way possible. Heck, some even get a kick out of it, like the excitement of victimizing another person is drug for them.

I don't want those people passing on that trait to their offspring (either genetically or through a dysfunctional family life). Humiliate them in public to show others what awaits them, then sterilize them and throw them into jail where they'll rot for life. Death is just too easy.

Execution within 24 hours if proven guilty. Rape is very rampant in our country and the governments actions is not enough to stop it. A lot of my countrymen favors reviving the death penalty law but some lawmakers are not favor of it because they believe it's not deterrent to decrease the crime, stupid politicians!

You really believe that watching porn is the reason why people become rapists? Evidence points to the contrary. Countries which are the most addicted to porn (such as Japan and South Korea) have some of the lowest rape rates in the world. And countries where porn is banned is having some of the highest rates.

If the case is backed up by sufficient evidence, the best solution is for the suspect to face a firing squad! Once you do this to a few people, the rest will have learned a lesson. The fear factor might work to deter more rape crimes. Rape leaves a permanent emotional and even physical scar to the victim.

You raise an important point.

In many western countries accused man is considered guilty until proven otherwise.

Any tribunal that uses inquisitorial rather than adversarial procedure is assuming guilty until proven innocent. Under inquisitorial procedure, the judge or presiding officer is an active participant. Under adversarial procedure, the judge is an impartial referee in a contest between a prosecutor and defender.

Conviction rate is a good indication of whether suspects are getting fair trials. Conviction rates average 60-80% in US state courts, where trials are generally fair. China's and Japan's 99% conviction rates tell us trials in those countries are unfair. US Federal trials also have a 99% conviction rate, but the even more astounding statistic is that only 3% of cases go to trial. Fully 97% are settled by inquisitorial plea bargain.

Thus, the evidence says China, Japan, and the US Federal system treat suspects as guilty until proven innocent, regardless of their stated rules of procedure.

I'm from India myself and I am totally ashamed to see the lack of prosecution given for these rapists. Once these rapists are found, they are kept in the police station while being given food to eat and chat with other inmates. The prosecution for these rapists will take months and most of them easily escapes from the hands of law by getting a very small jail sentence such as for 4 months or so. Like wtf has the country gone into? Who is giving support to these rapists?. Corrupt politicians are everywhere and I feel like they are behind all these. If I was the law, I would instantly cut the genitals of these rapists and make them parade around town or something. The laws need to change for sure.

Maybe you think punishment (such us death penalty) is a good solution for exαmple to prevent these kind of facts.However I believe we should focus in a more healthy solution for our society.Perhaps wil be difucult but it's an open chalenge for psycologicts and sociologists.

The facts given in that article are not 100% correct. Countries such as Afghanistan have tough punishments on paper, but the crime reporting rates are very low. Also, in many instances the victim is punished (for adultery) instead of the rapist.
