Anyone else excited for Vega this sunday? People have gotten 37mh/s eth on the FE editions and if the cutdown chip goes for $350-$400, we got a new contender.

37mh/s eth, despite poor optimizations + close to 1080ti compute performance. It will be a beast.

Currently I sold all BTC. Only hold ETH, small amounts of various other coins, gear and cash. After Vega release and bitcoin fork issues,if coins has a big dip, I'll buy in BTC.

Else if Vega is priced right, spend cash on vega. Otherwise spend cash on more 1080tis and sit pretty till volta next year. Because I will max out my warehouse's electricity with this expansion. Need to rent a proper industrial unit for future expansion.
While I am excited for the Vega release, shortages will probably be immense at release. Plus with the additional hashrate and ETH still dropping, I'm doubting they'll see much of an ROI ever.. sure if you already have ROI from previous farms and just roll the coins into new hardware it will probably be good.. otherwise.. who knows?

Vega may be okay .
 If the price is okay.
I will get one just on account .

Anyone ever had trouble with M2 to PCI-e adapters ?
I got 2 GPUs dead during last days, each on 2 different RIGS, and each was plugged on the M2 adapter ...

I never got one to work 0 for 3.  So I simply stopped using them.

My first one didnt work, so I removed it.

My second attempt, saw a puff of smoke from the molex connector cables, so I quickly removed that too.

The 4 pin molex connector to power it ... is very very suspicious -- its of very low quality.

Newer adapters uses SATA connector - this should be safer to use.

I have no use for these adapters anymore since I have moved the main rigs to the 12/13 GPU boards.

The M2 slot as an M2 SSD storage experience however was fantastic -
I never seen Windows installed and bootup so fast!

@ Phil , it may be related to the Mobo.
I noticed some are very hard with anything "advanced" (more than 4 GPUs , special adapters .. etc) , like the Z170s which are the worst IMHO.
But some mobos are very freindly with any kind of improvement, for example Z270s really helps for multiple GPUs rigs , and all M2 adapter alaways worked directly.

@ Citronick , thank you for feedback.
I never plugged any power connector to this kind of adapters. Just the adapter himself in the mobo, and the riser directly on it.
Always worked perfectly. Until the 2 burnt GPUs recently discovered...
I got some smoke too, but from the GPU itself when I tried to restart the faulty rig.
I'm sure this is linked to the M2 adapters, but can't explain/understand how/why.

About the 12-13 gpus rigs, do you know if the MB you use is available in Europe ?
because as far as I know, in EU, the best way to go for 8+ GPUs rigs is for the moment to use the M2 adapters (sometimes both) and PCIe splitters on good 6/7 slots mobos.

More personnally, did you manage to sell easily you old mobos when you switched to the new ones ?

You can get Biostar TB250 (12 x GPUs) and ASrock H110 Pro BTC (13 x GPUs) on Amazon.com and also Aliexpress -
around 250$ to 350$ USD - its cheaper from Aliexpress.  But I think, many Amazon resellers are selling them at premium because the supply has not gone mainstream yet. Maybe wait for a while more or get from Aliexpress.

The Asus Prime Z270-A mobo is a very good board for 7 x PCI slots (plus 2 x M2) - good standard mobo for GPU mining.

The Z170 boards are very unique and PITA, too many things to set to make it work, not ideal for GPU farms.

All my newer rigs uses both the new multi-GPU Biostar and ASrock mobo, to help me achieve better density/footprint ratio, power consumption, lower smOS fees etc.

The previous 6 and 7 slot boards are still being used in earlier the rigs.

I prefer to use the H81 Pro BTC and H110 Pro BTC (with onboard on/off switch), the board works out of the box without any changes to the BIOS. I love the on board ON/OFF switch button too.

The TB250 still needs to a have a few tweeks here and there in the BIOS before getting the board to work - all 12 slots.

what do you guys think about blower-fan 1080Ti's ? Good for mining or a risk with the single fan design?

As long as increased noise isn't an issue I would not be concerned about it. A good quality blower cooler will stay cool enough, just at higher noise levels.  We have 3 or 4 1080 Ti GPUs with blower coolers and they are fine so far.  An EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FE in my personal computer is actually the best miner out of all the GPUs we have running.

all I have used are blower fans.

I find that they are more stable and better in most cases, only downside is they run hotter naturally... so blowing fans on them will greatly help... all my rigs i have the thermastat controlled box fans mounted about 6 inches above the non-blower GPU's while the gpus sit open on the metal wire shelving i use.. I have the boxfan set at the highest temp it can go up to and it typically only draws around 35watts blowing on the rigs... i see nearly a 35watt or more drop in the rig power draw just turning the box fan on.. so they kinda offset one another... the gpu fans all went down around 20% on fan speed using a custom auto fan curve to keep them under 70c. on the blower cards i found they cool better if you mount them with the video ports facing upwards and lay the box fan on the shelf below it blowing upwards... drastically helped all my blower fans in open setups... blowing down helped better on my non-blower style cards.

You don't need to connect power to the m.2 adapter if you're using a powered riser.   I noticed a lot of people doing this for some reason.   I have 6-8 that have been stable for months without providing power to the adapter.

Look at the MSI 1080ti Armor, there is proof on the gamer forums that they are the exact same products with different fan design and decoration with just a different bios..

zotac 1080 ti mini

Form Factor & Dimensions

Max GPU Length   211 mm
Card Dimensions (L x H)   8.31" x 4.92"
Slot Width   Dual Slot

79mm length  difference  this is a huge difference

both use two 8 pin  connectors not one  8 and one  6

zotac
core 1506  1620
ram  11 ghz

armor

core 1531 1645

ram 11016

so as far as I can tell the length is very different

standard armor

the armor has no back plate and the pcbs is way longer then the zotac plus the zotac has a backplate.

It is late but I most likely will delete that post in the am  as the cards have huge  pcb differences

At storx  not the first time you made a completely wrong statement.

Do you have a link?  whats up with this.

see photos cards are clearly different.

msi armor a long  pcb board and it has no back plate.

zotac mini has a much shorter pcb

Hey Phil finally got the video put together that we talked about, thanks again for answering my 100 questions xD

https://youtu.be/fOzz6YFSNxE

good video.

I just got a hold of this card

https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9b-14-500-427

it is a zotac 1080ti mini

I am looking to build a 3 card 1080ti rig.

will post soon

Cute card. Phil can you try weighting the card. It will help to lower our shipping cost when reselling. Also for me I have to ship GPUs internationally to my farm, the savings are doubled.

In my experience, single fan 570s were 0.6kg, standard blower cards (480s, 1080tis) are 1kg, most standard size dual fan designs are 1-1.2kg too. The zotac mini looks to be 0.7kg or so.

Anyone ever had trouble with M2 to PCI-e adapters ?
I got 2 GPUs dead during last days, each on 2 different RIGS, and each was plugged on the M2 adapter ...

I don't trust that power plug aye.  What GPU's did you have on them?  I would run a 1070 but not a 1080ti for sure.
