It depends on what you mean by long term, if you mean a decade or two then I think bitcoin is the best option, buy if you mean something like 5 years then I think altcoins could outpace bitcoin in that period of time.

WTF??? A decade is long time and it not rational with the value of cryptocurrency in present. We don't know in 2020 the crypto world still can alive or die by some reason bullshit. So, 1-3 years or 5 years is max time for investing cryptocurrency.

Answer at all times: Buy Bitcoin for a long term investment and Buy altcoins for a short term investment. If you have read all the replies, you can see that yourself.

In my opinion still have some altcoin can long term as Ethereum, Monero, Zcash, because they are altcoin have real community and many user use it for their job. Monero and Zcash in next time I believe will become to best place for replace Bitcoin about sending money anonymous and privacy.

I might be wrong but I believe that most people go through bit going to get to all coins. It seems that the chain would be Fiat to bitcoin and then using Bitcoin on the exchange as a foundation for buying other coins. Most of our light trading is done in that manner , so technically if that's the method then Bitcoin is the first investment. Both are good forms of investment investing in altcoins has risks involved but bitcoin has less risk in terms of price. Price of bitcoin grows easily and really fast while altcoins take time and lose their highest point easily. My recommendation would be have 50% altcoin in your portfolio and 50% bitcoin for stable profit and loss control

Remember a year ago the highest ETH price around 0.01 and now the price is 0.06-0.1 BTC. I think ETH investment is very profitable for the next few years.

If you really want to invest for a long time purpose and have peace of mind I will advise you to invest in bitcoin and bitcoin among the crytocurrency have build trust over times. But if you are thinking of short time invest altcoins may be good for you as most altcoins are doing very well now.
