You are wrong here, you should try yourself with wagering $10 and look at your position on the race. I'm quite sure you wont be on that 4001-5000 position. I believe because I have wagered more than what you said and I'm even out of 10,000 position. Means that no one will be able to win something in this race just by wagering $10 even $100. I agree with you. I have used almost $300 of my own balance so far on a very good slide strategy and I have not even reached the 5000 position yet. Do not wager just because you want to win a small prize from the Race as it can be something not worth the risk.
Unless you are having huge amount of money to start and you can afford to risk it, it is better to play and (hopefully) win from the games instead of win from the race.
