Lately the site has been the target of some pretty persistent DDoS attacks, so that's what it probably is again. I'm sure they're working hard to address the problem though.

I think it's more to do with the general need to feel important/powerful. I doubt anyone has ever gotten paid in the bitcoin world for this type of extortion.

The site is up currently, we'll be making it fully Ddos proof once again.
