In some ways you're the worst casino operator I've ever seen. Stop tapping the tank!!

It's pretty funny, but I like it.  Smiley

I'm torn.  I want people to understand about probability and not be dumb about things, but I also want the site to be profitable.

I guess the traditional casino operator does everything he can to trick the player into playing.  I don't want to be that guy.

That really isn't a criticism. I like your approach. I expect I'd feel the same way. I keep telling people where they can buy things cheaper than I can sell them for, which certainly isn't the "right move" in a business sense, but lets me sleep better.

I sometimes think it may even help the bottom line.  The trust you gain by being honest is probably worth more than any business you lose from people who were only playing because they thought they had a sure-fire way of beating the house *and* have been convinced by your arguments that they don't.  In my experience, the people who know they can beat you aren't willing to listen to reason anyway.

I'm currently holding a design contest on 99designs for a Just-Dice logo.

I'm not entirely sure how the site works, but I think the winning designer gets something like $300.

If you have mad design skills, please consider contributing!

http://99designs.com/logo-design/contests/logo-wanted-dice-240815

And if you don't, your opinion would be appreciated on the designs that have already been posted.  The designers are very open to suggestions, since they all want to be picked as the winner and get paid.  So if there's anything you can think of to make any of the existing designs better, please add a comment saying so.  If you can't comment in the contest itself, comment here, and I'll pass it on to the designer(s) in question.

What is that vertical jump in the profit line that occurred on the 12th, 15th, and 16th?

Someone losing a lot of bitcoins with just a few rolls of the dice.

Lots of people use martingale betting on the site.  They start by betting a very small amount relative to the bankroll they have available, and double their bet until they win.  So long as they win one roll before the doubling gets out of hand, they are guaranteed a small profit.  This happens over and over, with the player taking a small profit from the site very reliably, and the siite profits gradually go down.  This is balanced by players not using martingale betting, who gradually lose due to the house edge.

Eventually the martingale players hit 10 or 15 or whatever losses in a row, and lose their entire bankroll.  This shows up as a vertical jump in the profit chart.

Apparently this style of betting is particularly common when people play with Bitcoin, and I'm not sure why.

Add a whole bunch of similar looking charts together and you get something like the site profit chart...

Thanks for the explanation and chart! Very interesting stuff.

I don't think martingale players are stupid. They probably select the parameters
so that they are highly unlikely to go bust in one night.
But then they just can't help repeating it the next night/weekend.

As for this being a pecularity of bitcoin players, my guess is that it's not about
bitcoin, but about the flexibility of bet sizes. You can't play with a fraction of a cent
in a casino, and in the places where you can do that you can't put 10000 USD on the same
table.

I don't think anyone was saying they are.

I think some of them think "there's no way I'll ever lose N times in a row so I can't lose" and then when they lose N times in a row they start thinking the house must be crooked.  Doesn't make them stupid, but does show a lack of understanding of probability.

In my experience, the people who know they can beat you aren't willing to listen to reason anyway.

Hey, who are you talking about?

Just Kidding. I listen to you and to reason (and to other little voices saying, "bet bet bet")

By the way, I've officially declared to my existing and previous "investors" that DIGS Run Number 1 is busted. hehehehe... (That's why you haven't heard from me in awhile.) But at least I've got some loyal followers who know they can trust me, because I refunded everyone when we didn't reach the amount we wanted to make the so-called 7th bet.

"Yay, Dabs lost!" ... no I didn't. Losing means you quit. I'm just on hiatus. Waiting for the whale who will eventually side with me. Or waiting until I have another couple of BTC of my own.

I'm also working on another project, sort of.

Edit: By the way, dooglus, in your algorithm, you take 5 hex digits of the hash, which represents a number from 0 to 1048576 right? Then to remove bias, any 5 hex digit sequence that is more than 1000000 is discarded? not 999999 and not 1000001? Exactly 1000000? The reason I ask is for an unbiased shuffling method I'm trying to do (for cards)

doog,

On the Stats page you have stats from the beginning of time. Can you also add the stats for the current day only? As an investor, I want to see 1) if the daily profit is tracking 1%, and 2) what the daily wager is. Maybe have an "All Daily Stats" in addition to the "All User Stats"?

I am confused by the cumulative profit of only 0.6%...but I think this is due to some scam that happened early in the site's history, am I right?

Acceptable values are 0 to 999999. This makes 1000000 total values, just like 0-3, (or 0, 1, 2, 3) is 4 values. If the value is unacceptable, a new one is taken from the next 5 hex digits.

No that is due to variance, and one big incident where the whale "celeste" won about 5000 BTC from the site making a bun ch if max bets and getting very lucky.  There was an accident where dooglus transfered 1300BTC to "celeste" but forgot to debit the #s from the account.  He made a  bunch of free rolls with the 1300 and lost it all.  Dooglus later decided to "roll back" those bets.  He delayed in that decision which caused some controversy.  In retrospect, he should have done so right away.  Regardless, this had no effect on the 0.6% profit - this is related to variance from celeste winning 5000 BTC due toa  bunch of max bets made within a few minutes.

The code I use is here: https://just-dice.com/lucky.txt

It uses values <1000000 and rejects others.  In other words it rejects numbers more than 999999.

I wanted exactly a million different lucky numbers: 000000 through 999999 inclusive.

I don't know if you're making a drug reference or not.  In the UK "hash" usually refers to hashish, or cannabis resin.  It used to be the most readily available form of cannabis there, before hydroponics became so available.  So running out of hash is quite the concern there.  I hadn't noticed when I wrote that code, but several druggy JD players have pointed it out to me since.  Smiley

I posted this on the gamblers thread and was asked to post it here as well.

Just-Dice is having a logo contest. Feel free to check it out, offer your opinions, and create a logo if you like!

These are the polls I created for the new logo contest.

https://99designs.ca/logo-design/vote-5kzf93   First Poll

https://99designs.ca/logo-design/vote-m9ljcq   Second Poll

I can't add new designs to the polls, so will probably just make a new poll every day.

Here is the link to the page with all the designs.
https://99designs.ca/logo-design/contests/logo-wanted-dice-240815

We picked the 6 finalist designers for the logo contest.  I made a new poll, featuring one design from each of the 6 designers:

http://99designs.com/logo-design/vote-gidjo5

Please visit, vote, and and comment.  Thanks!
