Just minimize risk, you can never eliminate it.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

This whole thing will never work if you can't trust the exchanges that you're poring money into. Mt. Gox, for example, is a place I think we can safely say IS safe, even if their registration requirements are a bit strict (need an id and proof of address). Other than them, though, I'm suspicious of everything.

Don't always trust yourself either. Especially when talking about money/investing. You are driven by emotions, which is bad.

don't trust online wallet services even to Mtgox? I only store bitcoins offline. I send money to MtGox or other exchanges in small amounts, and only for the length of time it takes to make a transaction and get my money out again. You may choose to trust an online wallet service if you feel they are trustworthy. I will not trust ANY online wallet until bitcoins can be stored safely even when a hacker has complete access to them. For instance, if bitcoins could be marked as savings in the protocol and become non-transferable for a period of time selected by their owner.

don't trust online wallet services even to Mtgox? I only store bitcoins offline. I send money to MtGox or other exchanges in small amounts, and only for the length of time it takes to make a transaction and get my money out again. This gentleman knows what's going on. I don't store bitcoins offline myself because I prefer to keep my money in USD (it's a bit more useful ), but it would be cool to see the internet in general start accepting bitcoins as a payment method. I think once Amazon allows the use of bitcoins an offline wallet will be a very good idea. Until then, I rarely keep bitcoins from one day to the next (unless you count amounts less than half a bitcoin, leftover from transactions)
