I respect the diligence of the OP. However, there is reasonable precaution and then there is paranoia. That said, I tend to do intensive research before I trust and verify those I give my money to. I also take the OP's word of precaution a bit further and only work with exchanges that I can contact personally and keep tabs on indefinitely. At the end of the day though, I can only trust myself and those who put their trust in me.

Excellent post and comments. It made me think twice about a recent transaction. I've yet to be burned. But that doesn't mean I'm ill prepared.
When I trade on the exchanges, I like to diversify my assets among the multiple exchanges to reduce the risk even if it is slightly more complicated to do so effectively.

I like the idea of a password clue formula. of course, a person would have to be careful not to populate it solely with information someone can find with a combination of google searches and facebook stalking...

Unfortunately whenever there is money involved there will be people out to get a piece of it unlawfully. There is also many that go about it the right and legal ways. Knowing which is which is not always easy. Sometimes the people you think you can trust turn on you, yet other times the ones that look like they are shady as a hundred year old tree are safe as houses. I spose it comes down to not always judging too quickly or you may miss out on opportunities. Think of it this way, I am sure that when bitcoin came out many people claimed it was just a scam with someone that was going to disappear with their money. Yet here we are and many people have made profits on the way. Still others that had the chance and decided it was too risky missed out.
So everything in moderation, do your due dilligence but do not jump to conclusions, you may miss out on great opportunities.
