not done this for ages.....
Just downloaded latest wallet (25) Renamed wallet.dat >> old. Currently 49 weeks behind. Slowly got up to 8 connections. Now pretty much stuck.
It will download a meg or two in the first 2/3 minutes, but then network traffic will fall to a pitiful level. Is this normal? If I restart, it will once again download the first 2 meg quickly again.....then back to dead slow with very occasional spikes on the network traffic graph.
Could be way off base here, but I used to get exactly that is torrent downloads, and it was the service provider capping the bandwidth at certain times and/or you've gone over your monthly allowance and you've gone into an annoying web only browsing mode. It could be flagging as a torrent due to percieved packet size similarity and transfer characteristics. @qwizzie. Thanks, downloading bootstrap now. @sub-ether. I have been putting it out of my mind and reluctant to muddy the waters, BUT... All my torrenting is fine. Other dloading seems fine too. However, exactly the same thing happens when I have tried using ACE media player to stream football. Will buffer reasonably fast...get a few seconds worth, then stop completely. Can see the bandwidth digits getting hammered down like clockwork. I just can't believe this is happening with a wallet, but I suppose if the ports are in a range?? Could be?

here are some of my own thoughts on future wallet improvements :
- would like an option to create certain blockchain points, lets call them reindex restore points (like how windows use restore points). you can then select to restore the blockchain through re-index to a state of for example a week ago and dont need to have the whole blockchain re-indexed
- would like to see important commandline options integrated in the GUI wallet (zapwallettxes, reindex, rescan) so you can activate them on next restart through the click of a button.
- would like some info about possible new updates available in the GUI wallet so users will know its time to update
- would like to see the windows wallets sync and download as fast and as problemless as on Linux (which is impressively fast). Right now windows wallets often require restarts to get a good syncing (even when on latest wallet version 61000) and are sluggish during sync (again even with wallet version 61000). This one is mostly adressed right now with v0.11.2.x on Github i think .. but i'm not totally sure.

I'll do backups of the blockchain for this. Integrating this into the wallet would be more convenient, though. - would like to see important commandline options integrated in the GUI wallet (zapwallettxes, reindex, rescan) so you can activate them on next restart through the click of a button.

The original Bitcoin/Litecoin reference implementation had this, so I guess (but don't know) that it's also available in Darkcoin, but is just not used. - would like to see the windows wallets sync and download as fast and as problemless as on Linux (which is impressively fast).
I'm not sure if this is a Darkcoin problem...ALL my wallets sync way faster on Linux.

Yer, odd you get same with media player as well, some of them routers are a pain in the arse with flood control/port forwading etc, found that out when doing testnet masternodes. The website port checkers don't show it either. Direct PC based software like port checker/scanners from majorgeeks should show it better.

Dash is 27.3 times faster with syncing and updating than Bitcoin and 93.7 times faster than Monero. Bitcoin (v0.11.0) has a Tao ratio 11.2% faster than bitcoin (v0.10.0) release. Maybe the windows GUI during sync is just starting to many processes at once, i wonder if it would be more efficient / faster if we decouple longterm syncing with the loading of the GUI wallet. With long syncs (longer than a day perhaps? ) make it sync first and only show some simple loading / syncing screen and once synced start all other processes of the GUI, including further syncing ofc. edit : just my thoughts, i dont have much techn knowledge / code knowledge so i have no idea if what i describe above is even remotely possible or even necessary.

OK, the last 2 weeks gunna have to grind out. Still, better than doing 50+!
Once I get these done, if I want to update other PC's, do I just copy over the blocks? Chainstate? DB?

I'd like to thank eduffield and the other developers for this critically important evolution in virtual currency. DarkCoin is what bitcoin should have been. Some might call it "Bitcoin 2.0" but would do better by saying: "DarkCoin is digital cash." - Child Harold - February 28, 2014 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.msg5424980#msg5424980

At some point we* need to fix this thing with the pools "cheating" or deciding who gets paid. Enforcement is not a solution.
I know it's been tried and that it delayed development for months back in May-June and it's best (in retrospect) that we* focused more on DarkSend and InstantX, but masternode payments needs to get sorted eventually to be a decentralized solution where payments are decided by the protocol itself.
*We = the coders of course, not me.
