Mike Hearn's actually partial to a bit of control freakery.

He's alluded to being comfortable with both coin tainting and also using checkpointing to ram through a hardfork in the face of rebellious Chinese miners.

So, BTC will be at capacity next summer, it takes a while to organise a fork. So it needs to be agreed pretty much in the next month or so, for testing of fork in Sept, and hard fork in January.
Lightning network is capable of scaling Bitcoin, but the software is 2-3 years out. So block sizes need to go up, now-ish.

Against

Basically, its about orphan rates for miners, especially those in China where a small group own 60%+ of the hash power of BTC

Increasing block sizes means their crappy internet speeds will increase orphans, so their miners will be buzzing away and get loads of rejects.

Secondly, its about fees. When there are wait times, people pay fees to get their transactions through the mining process faster. Bigger blocks means fees are not needed, until the transactions increase again.

You are assuming a linear projection on uptake from now, if usage starts accelerates it will be much sooner. The way I see this chart is we're almost there already!

Dash is 27.3 times faster with syncing and updating than Bitcoin and 93.7 times faster than Monero. Bitcoin (v0.11.0) has a Tao ratio 11.2% faster than bitcoin (v0.10.0) release.
Dash (v.0.12.0.49) = Tao sync ratio = 0.15 seconds / hour of update || Dash (v.0.11.2.23) = Tao sync ratio = 0.24 seconds / hour of update. V12 versus V11 speedup = +36.5%
Bitcoin (v.0.11.0) = Tao sync ratio = 4.14 seconds / hour of update || Monero (v.0.41.1)  = Tao sync ratio = 14.2 seconds / hour of update

Not wishing to belittle your chart, even though I just did - Bitcoin goes quiet over the summer as people go on holiday and generally spend more time outside.

The default mining parameters are set to block size of ~700kb. So there is plenty of capacity if these lazy bastards bother to stop mining for 2 minutes and go into their config files.

Peak speculative activity, such as now, will skew the results. But hey, let the speculators pay more fees for a while  Tongue

"Bitcoin startup Elliptic has announced a new blockchain visualization tool that draws connections between several well-known dark markets and bitcoin exchanges.

Called the 'Bitcoin Big Bang', the feature is part of an offering aimed at businesses looking to beef up their anti-money laundering efforts.

The tool, which displays an interactive web of blockchain entities, shows how Silk Road, for example, connects to several 'Known Exchanges' currently operating."

I can't believe they're just going to fling the hardfork out there and cross their fingers they get a majority adoption. They must feel it's getting urgent.

This specific proposal (20MB blocks) is recent, but the whole debate has been going on for two years, if not more. I'm personally amazed at the bitcoin community's capacity to talk shit to death.

In fact, that's one of the things that makes me skeptical about bitcoin's future and hopeful about Dash's. The bitcoin community has argued for two years over making an improvement to their protocol, and still nothing has happened.* On the other hand, Dash hasn't even existed for two years yet has completely redefined itself and gone through more hardforks/sporks than I can even remember. In a little over a year, we went from being another pointless altcoin (Xcoin) to added masternodes, darksend, masternode reward schedule changes, adding a reference node, InstantX, decentralized governance, removing the reference node, and a professional project management team.  On the horizon we have possible scalability solutions and darksend improvements like masternode blinding.

In two years bitcoin has done virtually nothing*, and Dash has created the most technologically innovative crypto in the world. Network effects are a powerful thing, but radical improvements in technology usually trump everything.

(*I'm aware that bitcoin has gone through numerous updates in the last two years, but the majority were minor. Some were nice, like faster syncing by downloading headers first, but we aren't really talking about mass-innovation here.)

This tutorial will help you run the latest Dash-qt client on Test-net. This video is mean't for Linux but can be used for Windows/Mac as well. You will just need to locate your dash.conf in the Dash Data directory.

Busterzzz created this easy to follow video on how to join testnet. The only difference is you need to look for the latest binaries from Eddufield. If you want to help but have not done it before, this should help.

Note: I used Dash Developer Flare as an example in this video, but Minotaur26 is correct. When you look for the latest binaries on the testnet thread (over at DT), make sure you look for Evans Posts with the download links. He hadn't posted any since his first post, hence the reason I used flare as an example. If anyone has any questions getting onto testnet shoot me a pm here or on DT.

I have got to learn Github for my day job. (A client of mine has instructed this).

Can anyone point me in the direction of some great tutorials and/or videos etc that can turn me from clueless into a github supremo ? - painlessly of course.

(Github wasn't invented when I was alive. We used cassettes where you pressed play and record at the same time to store stuff. Does Github have play and record buttons ?)
