the difficulty seems extremely high for the price of the coins

This means people are mining because they are confidence in their beliefs of the coin, not because they are here to make a quick buck. If enough people believe the coin will succeed, the price will adjust accordingly.
Returns on mining this one are much lower than plenty of others.  Mining at clevermining and buying drk will get around 30-40% more dark for your hash and power usage will only be a factor if your Kw costs are way up there.

Hey TS. I have no idea. I was offered a 5DRK tip for the work, but the tipbot on Reddit seemed to be broken at the time so I didn't get it, and I've heard nothing about it since. The creator of bitcoinpaperwallet hasn't answered any of the pull requests to add new coins either, so I'm a little disheartened given all the work I put into it.

We have paperwallet for DRK at http://paper.darkcoin.io

But I guess theirs looks better.

DarkCoin - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615 - DarkCoin aims to be the first privacy-centric cryptographic currency with fully encrypted transactions and anonymous block transactions.

But by doing this . . you're supporting coins with hashpower. Net hashrate = popularity and demand. People see high hashrates and think they might be on something good . . and when they see high rates for things like fluttercoin and klondikecoin . . well that's a problem.

Clevermining is a nice idea, and service . . but I don't want to support garbage coins.

I'm comfortable losing a few potential cents a day by choosing this route.

DarkSend Beta V5 Release (v0.10.0.0) !

This release has a bunch of new features, I’ve been laying the groundwork to get DarkSend closer to the implementation described in the whitepaper. Check out the whitepaper here to see what the following bullet points are talking about:

http://www.darkcoin.io/downloads/DarkcoinWhitepaper.pdf

- Separated payment node from master node
- Decentralized the master node, signing now happens on a “finalized transaction” which is whatever the masternode decides made it into that transaction.
- Using the finalized transaction users can know if they need to resubmit into the next session (extremely rare).
- Integrated the denominate functionality into an automated process, if inputs are needed when you try to DarkSend they’ll be created on the fly now.
- Removed denominate button and api calls

Remember to add this to your config:
addnode=23.23.186.131

I'd like to thank eduffield and the other developers for this critically important evolution in virtual currency. DarkCoin is what bitcoin should have been. Some might call it "Bitcoin 2.0" but would do better by saying: "DarkCoin is digital cash." - Child Harold - February 28, 2014

IMHO it is not a factor considering the timeline proximity of scrypt asic which is going to more than quadruple the available hashpower in scrypt.  This combined with the beta/closed nature of Darksend to me proves it is better to not broadcast the potential of this coin to the network when the most popular features are less than fully available.  I say let everyone think vertcoin is the best alternative for GPUs despite not having any real advantages/innovations.  When the market prices in features for this coin that are ready and working it should prove indisputably how much value a anonymous coin is to those who wish to conduct private transactions like cash offers versus a public ledger.  There is no way in my mind the miners will not follow the markets value just as it is smartest to do now if only for the efficiency of power usages sake.

Darksends look pretty cool in the new explorer:

http://chainz.cryptoid.info/drk/tx.dws?170313.htm
Indeed!

Each darksend adds more and more uncertainity as to the actual money paths. It seems that two mixings will be better than one, especially if the mixing node selection maximized uncertainity, eg. converge each nodes in/out to overall average. This would eliminate most of the knapsack attacks.

What do you think about being able to specify additional anonymity by requesting additional stages of mixing. The tradeoff is transaction cost/time vs anonymity level. This would eliminate most timing attacks.

I see where you're coming from . . but bringing vertcoin into this is adding a third aspect into the discussion . . the coin we're taking about, the not-so-great coins, and the legitimate competition.

I watched Vertcoin grow and even mined it for a while . . until someone described fully that it's not even a large step to make asic-n capability in second gen scrypt miners. As far as vertcoin goes, they have a great distribution of coins . . a fine community of supporters . . decent enough all around. Not a bad coin or community by far . . but the fact that asic's are easy to adapt to it, the lack of future anonymity, and my own lack of faith in the development team pushed me away. As far as the technical innovation behind the algo goes . . people say the same thing about this one in that half was taken from one coin and half was taken from another . . so I consider these two on an even level there . . though I do have to admit that I have a bias toward DRK being a bit more innovative on that level due to the reading I'm doing recently on different sha candidates.

Back to the original discussion . . I can agree that asics will easily push up the scrypt hashrate by a lot and push out GPU miners to the future, but I just can't justify mining the next two or three months keeping these struggling trashbag coins alive. Maybe it's because the thought of some poor bastard actually investing his hard-earned fiat into the worst decision of his live . . because that's what you're really doing when you mine those coins and cash out. The value you put into your pocket . . ultimately came from someone else's. I don't favor taking part in this because it's a little too close to robbing.

I know that nobody forces these people to throw money at crypto . . but we can't all be trying to suck up the dumb money as fast as possible . . the line's gotta be somewhere. I decided that it's here for now . . in a coin where I see a good growing community, involved and transparent developers, and much more. Maybe in the end we're all just taking dumb money and putting it in our pocket . . but at least this way it feels like we both bought into the craziness.

Is transaction time actually that big an issue for people? Bitcoin payment processors are moving to instant confirmations to ensure the user experience for the average person is flawless. The mining wait time is a back end issue.

Cost? extra data storage or transaction fees? That probably depends on what people are prepared to pay for anonymity. But fees do need to be carefully considered.

New experimental feature for http://chainz.cryptoid.info/drk/:

Do you use ip addresses to guesstimate the wallet totals?  Can you guesstimate how many people have a darkcoin wallet at this point?

no removed

I second this, they even have news articles about DRK on their site: http://www.btc38.com/altcoin/drk/1153.html

The link is the third one on 3/27 for the competitive currency category (center of the page)

Doesn't look like they're getting rid of DRK . . acutally they seem like fans . . a translated quote from the article:  "there is Zerocoin project is still no substantial progress , while Darkcoin 's DarkSend technology has entered the beta V3 test phase."

Edit: Actually that entire article . . using google translate seems like very high praise. If you get bored open it up and drop it all in the translator and read it.

Chinese dumping because government stopped banks from working with exchanges. Chinese just giving their coins away cheap to everyone else.
