"Using Bitcoin does to the big banks what e-mail does to the Postal Service."

http://m.ibtimes.com/u-s-postal-service-first-class-mail-donahoe-congress-214545.html

Quote
"We simply need fewer facilities to process less mail," Megan Brennan, said chief operating officer of the Postal Service.

The postal service has experienced fast decline in First Class mail due to the Internet, as more people use e-mail and online bill pay instead. In the last five years, for example, First Class mail volume has dropped 25 percent. Single-piece first class mail -- letters and such sent with a stamp -- has declined 50 percent in the past decade.

Companies claiming they got hacked and lost your coins sounds like fraud so perfect it could be called fashionable.  I never believe them.  If I ever experience the misfortune of a real intrusion, I declare I have been honest about the way I have managed the keys in Casascius Coins.  I maintain no ability to recover or reproduce the keys, not even under limitless duress or total intrusion.  Remember that trusting strangers with your coins without any recourse is, as a matter of principle, not a best practice.  Don't keep coins online. Use paper or hardware wallets instead.

Bitcoin is the world's most powerful computing network. It's harder to hack than any bank in the world.

You can use Bitcoin to buy [their vice] secretly, without giving away personal information on the internet.

Bitcoin is borderless electronic cash - anyone in any country can send and receive bitcoins without signing up anywhere or opening an account.

(ok - so the merchant part, and exchange to local currency part aren't quite there on a global scale - but it gives an idea of the potential.)

I seem to encounter a lot of really profoundly nontechnical people (which is odd, since I live in the Bay area and am a professional geek but I just don't cultivate a ton of geek social connections for whatever reason). I tell lay people:

Quote
"these days the biggest supercomputer in the world is Bitcoin"

whenever I do this I always feel guilty for not saying

Quote
"these days the distributed computer system with the most processing power is Bitcoin."

but if I said that they would hear: (in a nasal, condescending tone)

Quote
"it's common knowledge that today the most powerful discombobulated hyper-processing aparatus in terms of decagigadefenestrations is, of course, the P9783.419 Microsupergigaperambulator which as everybody knows is being offered by Confusosoft as a metahypomux of the ultracombowhatsit.'"

So I just keep it simple.

Watt is that? Ohm, I get it! You want the us to volt this question threw, even though the OP was looking for a statement. My bulb! The OP was looking for a sentence so I guess a question is suffice.

As far as your question is concerned:

Q: How many Bitcoin geeks does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None! Their mom's do it for them. (reads like something a troll would pen, though I'm not a troll)

Satoshi himself gave us good lines when version 0.3 was released:

Announcing version 0.3 of Bitcoin, the P2P cryptocurrency!  Bitcoin is a digital currency using cryptography and a distributed network to replace the need for a trusted central server.  Escape the arbitrary inflation risk of centrally managed currencies!  Bitcoin's total circulation is limited to 21 million coins.  The coins are gradually released to the network's nodes based on the CPU power they contribute, so you can get a share of them by contributing your idle CPU time.

He is better with code than with words though.

proof-of-work means when the boss looks over your shoulder you point and say "look what i did!".

does proof-of-work have any other meaning to the average person?

Don't know about the "average person", but "work" is a physics term that measures energy consumed in Joules. One Joule is equal to a watt.second. Finding the "magic number" proves that on average, you expended a certain ammount of energy (given reasonable assumptions about your mining setup).

yep, sure. i was just pointing to the fact that this thread is supposed to be for 'non bitcoiners'.

i guess there are a lot of non-bitcoiners that studied physics, but i took it to mean 'non technically minded people'.

"Bitcoin: a Ponzi scheme since 2009"

Note: of course this is sarcastic. A characteristic feature of Ponzi schemes is that they cannot last for a long time; reminding people that Bitcoin has been around for almost 3 years should make the contradiction clear.

ok, less sarcastic version:

That's the most convoluted rephrasing of "Freedom is slavery" that I've ever read. Human liberation comes from putting yourself under others' control?!

Where do you get under 'others' control from that?  You could have also read  "Human liberation comes from having control of your own life."

"I watch bitcoin charts so I have of late--but
wherefore I know not--lost all my mirth, forgone all
custom of exercises; and indeed it goes so heavily
with my disposition that this goodly frame, the
earth, seems to me a sterile promontory, this most
excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave

with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to
me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours.
What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason!
how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how
express and admirable! in action how like an angel!

what is this quintessence of dust?

So I used this one line twice today not because I was planning on it but it just came out of my mouth.  It was VERY effective.  I had a whole conversation about 5 min with one person.  For the second person they asked for more information and I gave them three websites which I wrote down on a receipt for him.  The second person was a cashier and he saw my "bitbill".  I started explaining to him and what hooked him in was this line:

"Bitcoin is going to end all wars."

Yep, I know it's a shocker line but I believe in it and it just makes people curious about what it was.  Once he was hooked the final push was me mentioning how "bitcoin is controlled by the power of mathematics."

Use my one liners! Worked for me!  Smiley

That's technically impossible considering it relies on the internet.

If we go non-technical though; it's not an unreasonable tagline.

Bitcoin trading is limited by the physical boundaries of the Internet.  Except it isn't limited at all; physical bitcoins are made and could be used without being near a computer.

In that sense, Bitcoin is bigger than the Internet.

Since it's only a PR line, it's not really worth worrying that much about.

Well, if we include casacius coins and paper wallets and cards, bitcoins can go in and out of internet: in that sense, we could contend that it is bigger than internet.
I would not go down that path as a primer though.

Bitcoin is a digital commodity useful as a medium of exchange.

now the noobtubing C.O.D players can make money out of their PC's (still without leaving the basement or getting girlfriends)

bitcoin is not like gold. as gold has many uses beyond from trading value. bitcoins are more like art. to own, keep and sell for profit.

Historic art for the rich, is like bitcoin for everyone.

with 2 bitcoins in your wallet, your never poor.

My favorite, as spoken by someone on this forum (can't remember who):

"BITCOIN IS MAGIC INTERNET MONEY !"

Helps if you scream it real loud then drop to the floor, mouth foaming.

Bitcoin: the only currency you can store directly into your brain.

What this planet needs is a good 0.0005 BTC US nickel.

Bitcoin is your money, immune to abuse by governments and banks.

The Democratization of Money: Bitcoin is the Currency of Liberation

And thus came Bitcoin, some lasting thing that men might keep without spoiling, and that by mutual consent men would take in exchange for the truly useful, but perishable supports of life.

For the first time in history, we as individuals have access to tools which will allow us to truly take hold of our own wealth, and participate directly in the system that controls it.

Back In 1995 asking most firms about their Internet strategy yielded the same response as does asking organizations today for their Bitcoin strategy.

I like to say, "Its backed by millions of people, but not governments or politicians like you probably want. Sorry."  Cheesy

Its backed by millions of people, just like tulips?

nice try, dude. tulips lack many other properties of money.

I'm pretty sure he was in reference to the Tulip Mania in the 1600's.

this was invented by Mihai Alisie, the creator or the Bitcoin Magazine, while we were partying in London at the conference 2012. The way he said it and continues to do so encompasses all the passion he has for bitcoin.

I think it's a good slogan:

Quote from: Mihai Alisie
Bitcoin.

Fuck yeah!

Bitcoin is going to be the biggest opportunity for innovation that the world has seen since the industrial revolution.

Bitcoin is a startup currency which has never happened before.

This reminds me... does anyone know of anyone offering 3d printer parts for bitcoin?

If not - great business just waiting to be created.

Bitcoin is a lot like oil for those who realize, that is like oil was before the invention of the internal combustion engine & there's a lot of smart dedicated people working on that part right now so stake your claims folks.

Thanks to forum ID: Myself who pointed this out in a chat & put it much simpler than I did which is probably best.

Simpler version was something like:

Bitcoin atm is like oil was before the invention of the combustion engine.

Bitcoins - Spend $1200 to make $10 or maybe less each day but maybe more as long as difficulty doesn't go up, or exchange rate  goes down.. Its awesome. How much is your electricity per KWh anyway? Did I say its awesome?

Long story short, if we really have to come up with something about its backing, then Bitcoin is backed by the common effort of the world-wide community, its incentive to keep the system running, and the passion to build upon its unique features.

Unlike money today, Bitcoin is not backed by force, it's backed by love.

"A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." George Washington

I think we should listen to the words of the Founding Father not only according to arms but to the currency, the information, the internet etc.

Bitcoin gives us what is the most important - the independence and the freedom.

That is a bogus quote. What GW actually said was "A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined; to which end a Uniform and well digested plan is requisite: And their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories, as tend to render them independent others, for essential, particularly for military supplies."

from the First Annual Message United States [New York] January 8th 1790.

"Yeah, about that... maybe now is a good time to tell you. You know I had been jailed and tortured back in the days of the civil war when I got captured by the western cartel forces in the 2020s? You know... I had been carrying this through all this time of hardship. I still have this Casascius 1 BTC coin *whips out casascius coin*. Presumptuous a little no? That's a false statement. I've been supporting BTC since I found out what they are. I try to use companies/vendors that use them and have spent my life savings and my daughter's college fund on SilkRoad.

A result of trying to explain bitcoin to friends who can't be bothered to spend a bit of time reading about it:

Bitcoin - it could well be in you interest to take a bit of an interest.

What is bitcoin?
- look it up on the internet

Where can I buy some bitcoins?
-try the internet

(pretty much any other question)?

My one liner...

The line being the price chart one that goes from Christmas & New Years 2011 when I reminded my good friends that I celebrated it with that the coins I'd bought the month before at under $3 were already showing a healthy profit & that they should get in to some, same friends that I recommended gold to in March 2007 when it was $666 per Oz & they said Oh No,no,no - by then it had made about 300% in under 4 years - anyway they've had updates when bitcoin doubled to $6, then redoubled to $12, yet again to $24 & recently to $48 plus & they still haven't been persuaded that it is even worth a look at, other friends I've also tried to interest have been equally unreceptive, one of the more investment minded & entrepreneurial I printed out this chart when visiting for lunch recently highlighting 2012 summer's $6 price when I emailed him re looking in to this & the price when we met up last month, $24 = a fourfold increase, he did start to pay some attention & said he'd get back to me - expect that he may be a little shocked that $24 is ancient history now already.

There are more people voting for a living than working for a living - how do you want to protect yourself and the fruits of your labor?  A non-inflatable asset.

can anyone think of any good ones? something you could quickly mention to someone, like a fact or something.. stuff like, "there are over (some number) bitcoin related sites".. whatever, anyone got anything good?

Use Bitcoin: Send your money anywhere in the world, to anyone, for any reason, with no fees or strings attached

I respectfully disagree. Please don't spread false information about Bitcoin. use "Minimal" or "insignificant". But there is definitely "fees" involved for MOST transactions.

Will take me a while to climb up again, But where is a will, there is a way...

I respectfully disagree. Please don't spread false information about Bitcoin. use "Minimal" or "insignificant". But there is definitely "fees" involved for MOST transactions.

"At the moment, many transactions are typically processed in a way where no fee is expected at all"
"Transaction fees are voluntary on the part of the person making the bitcoin transaction"
"The transaction fee is therefore an incentive on the part of the bitcoin user to make sure that a particular transaction will get included into the next block"
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transaction_fees

This is how I was assuming Bitcoin still worked. Moving forward we have to be careful as even the tiniest fees can be debilitating to those processing a large volume of micro-transactions. I think these tiny transactions will be a big part of the future of Bitcoin. But I'm still under the impression that money can be sent for free. Please correct me if I'm still wrong.

Ok, more informative guys please correct me if I got this wrong. If you go to any "new" transaction on blockchain.info you will see an estimation for the first confirmation. The position in the queue to be confirmed is determined (or estimated) by how big the transaction is (Size wise and not amount wise). considering how large the fees included are, plus both how old is this transaction and how much the included fees are.

This means even though a transaction was made before another, The older transaction might be pushed back in the queue because it has no fees included or low fees. This queuing mechanism is not infinite and on the times where alot of people are making transactions a no fee transaction might take a very long time and sometimes (Yes it happened alot and to me personally a few times) this transaction might not happen at ALL, Especially if that transaction was big (Size wise and not amount wise).

The day where you simply cannot make a free transaction or a very low fee transaction is getting closer and closer but really don't sweat it Bitcoin is still light years away from being "Expensive" way to send money. (Please don't start the micro transaction cost guys, That is a VERY different story).

I hope this shed some light and please tell me if I am mistaken about something.

Where E is eCurrency (BTC/Bitcoin), m is money ($), and c is the speed of light.

BTC = $c2

HSBC BTCitcoin - The world's local bank

Wells Fargo BTCitcoin - Together we'll go far

Bitcoin: You can’t counterfeit the Bit; you don’t want to deal with common capers and the lawless. Don’t throw a fit, Obama just wants a peek inside your paper wallets. No one need fear, because Satoshi is here! Oh Nakamoto, you’re quite the hero. Mark Karpelès walked around downtown Tokyo[Toe-Key—OH-O]. What did he hope to find, what did he hope to find, while searching around outside? He walked over to ol’ Mt. Gox and pocketed 850,000 crypto-coins… B-I-T-C-OIN, B-I-T-C-OIN.

AND BITCOIN WAS ITS NAME-O.

But that’s not the end of our story, nope, not today, no. What happened to our old friend Mark Karpelès? Oh…

Mark Karpelès! Watch as he plays a game called “How To Snare a Bitmillionaire.” Yet from here, he declares and swears, that he was merely caught unawares, of just what was going on downstairs, to his wares. No, he was too busy pocketing his shares. Mt. Gox is worse than all the cartels—thanks a lot, Markie Mark. Ready your prayers and your affairs, Mister Mark Karpelès, because I’m meeting you at the thoroughfares, while I'm out there. I set off the flares; make sure your glares aren’t causing you to become even more impaired.

So, he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the fares, ye root up also the bears. Say your farewells, Mr. Mark Karpelès. You attempted repairs, and we watch while you blunder alone at home. Oh, but he yells and despairs as he's taken from there, “No! Not without my waifu’s underwear!” Anne Frankly while I did Nazi this coming, it has nonetheless brought tears to my eyes, regardless. Though many decide to acquiesce his largesse, despite the mess and less success—unless his waifu's caress makes one reassess and egress—Karpelès would repress to guess, unless success chose to transgress… he'd dress himself in none but the best and most obviously fresh, suggests his pretty pockets are filled with a certain address, loaded with all his assets, while his confidants try to annex the press. Indeed, oh yes. And to concluded this hairy-tale, as a lone sacrificial lamb of Mark's once said… “You just got Mt. Goxed, my friend.”

*** note, i had posted this as another thread but now believe it's better to post here.

I like to try to bring a smile to the face of the people with whom I am attempting to influence and I often struggle at doing so. However, there's this great tool called Open Source where the community gets together to accomplish amazing things so with that in mind... post your replies to critics and let the community have a go at building upon your witty retorts:

Example: Shit Bitcoin Fanatics Say, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reo7WbibxaQ

The three gigantic bubbles, hacks, frauds, opposition of governments, etc that you mentioned- in what time period did that happen? Two years?
Less?
Your "currency", backed by the bright eyed myopia of naiveté, is unstable and doomed to failure.
The rest of us are watching a train wreck in slow motion, but we're normally used to doing it AFTER THE FACT. That's what makes this whole thing so fascinating-- you're still selling tickets for a ride.

***[–]ponziunit 1 punto 2 minutes ago
Personally, I will welcome you when you realize that the apparent train wreck is nothing more than the bitcoin locomotive clearing the tracks with the cowcatcher and that your viewpoint is that of a friend of the herd of corruption witnessing, yet not fully understanding the chaotic sight as an honest accounting plows through fakery and deceit. You will awake from this nightmare, and let me be the first to call out - Aaaaaaaaaaall abooooooard! Peace Train!

So Jesse Eisinger a Pulitzer-winning financial reporter and I'm not going to remain silent while he tries to crack jokes about my recently adopted "lifes biggest dream" am I? Anyway, if you believe my reply was witty enough pop over to reddit and give me an upvote please. Criticism welcomed (there's always an edit button).

Also, please share your favorite bitcoin fanatic saying in this thread for collaboration and critique Smiley

*** note about my reddit /handle PonziUnit - consider the 'ponzi unit' as the most speculative debtor, borrowing against price appreciation and who suddenly loses everything when price appreciation no longer covers interest on debts - the first domino of the collapse in other words. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyman_Minsky

Q: "bitcoin is used by hackers"
A: "well if hackers can't break the code and thus they trust it... shouldnt you also realise the security of bitcoin value is impressive"

Q: "who is the bitcoin creator and why cant we speak to him directly today"
A: "who invented paper money and why cant you speak to him today. in both cases it does not matter you can easily see the history and research and speak to any current value producers. the inventor is just a name in history"

Thanks! The hackers response I've been using. I had my own twist on it, 'bitcoin was forged in the foundry of hackers, scoundrels and idealists'. I'm borrowing that inventor of money reply.

Hell, remember the first time you masturbated and then wondered what the hell just happened? Two to three days later you were at it again with the same results. After a couple more times, you had what was going on down to a science, so you hunted down the nearest goat. Okay, maybe, just maybe, it didn't take you as long as I, but surely a goat was in the equation. Wasn't it?

How about:

"Bitcoin:  Better odds than playing the lottery."

That's how I thought of it 5 years ago, and still do.  At least when I think of it in terms of it's potential to fatten my wallet.  I try (with limited success) to keep my various other philosophical musings isolated from this and from one another as appropriate.

Without the benefit of hindsight, would that be any smarter than sinking your life savings into bitcoin right now? Now that the gateways have been built, we're just a few soft forks away from global liberation.

Oh, I remember this thread. It's like a roll call of all the old time cheerleaders. The best part of this thread is it doesn't have any of the old timers that became scammers or went to prison. Edit: oops, I just saw Andrew Bitcoiner posted so never mind, there is a scammer.

Bitcoin is money for smart people. You wouldn't be interested.

And here's another to add which I didn't see in the list:

Really? You're repeating the first answer to this thread.

"Using Bitcoin does to the big banks what e-mail does to the Postal Service."

Some things I've read too many times here:

We've reached the bottom, it won't go any lower.

If we were to calculate the gains of all the scammers and compared them to the gains of all the buy and holders there is no doubt that in the end, the buy and holders are way ahead.  I'm sure there's the outlying scammer who is also way out in front but I don't believe I'd trade my buy and hold position for having to look over my shoulder to see who's standing there with handcuffs every time I spend a satoshi.
