I just ended up buying 12 of these cause they were available for overnight shipping.

I should be fine if i splice this wire and use it like the single pig tails right?

That will work perfectly for Scrypt only mining. I would not even try it for SHA mining though. Too much current to pull through a single feeder.

What is the part number/supplyer info, if you please?

Thanks!

Right, well, perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I mean the single MALE connectors and wires going to each plug are probably okay to use for mining but DO NOT use the single pigtail / end!
They don't specify the wire gauge size of that setup. So I'm figuring 16 gauge which is good for around 3.5 amps MAX! But, the wire gauge can be anything. Even 22 or even 24 gauge which is like telephone wire! Maybe good for a half to 1 amp MAX! You won't know what the gauge of the wire is until you cut it off the pigtail and strip it. It might be worthless for hashing actually, so don't be impatient or hasty and risk frying your power supply or worse, your mining pods.

So, cut the thing into 8 separate plugs. Strip and connect each plug's wire end to the main power supply.
Make sure you check and keep the polarity correct throughout the entire process. Center conductor is + Positive +.

If you want to pigtail them off of one wire from the power supply, use 14 gauge minimum which is good for up to 15 amps. Mining S-CRYPT is low power consumption but even at 1 amp each, that's 8 amps at the input wire which is too much to draw through it.

As usual, do this at your own risk! You fugg it up, you eat it!

Good luck!

Personally I'd say unless you absolutely have to buy 100 of these now, then don't.  Just too much "stuff"...wires, miners, fan noise, controller firmware issues, etc.  According to Jack there's supposedly a ATX form-factor version of these coming out...I bet in that version they'll stop doing this inefficient round miner form factor and cram a bunch of these chips onto one or more boards.  That's when the Gridseed chips will really be worth it.

I had hoped that the these miners worked out better and even wanted to buy another set of 10 miners....but I won't be doing so after my current experience with them.  I wanted to retire my 3Mh gpu miner due to high power costs, but the way things have turned out looks like it'll be around at least for the next two months.

For now I'm just going to wait this out a bit longer...there's a few companies out there which are working on better specs and price points relative to these..so my meager few $ will stay in my pocket for a while.

That's interesting, any pointers to when the larger boxes will be ready and who is building them. I'm trying to decide if it's best to go all in for a bunch of gridseed round devices, or wait for a better form factor...

does anyone no if theres a DIY guide on how to make the power cords for a modular psu for these gridseeds? I read part 3 of this guide and it doesn't help me because I'm ignorant with this kind of stuff and require pics with steps lol This guide is good an i'll donate as soon as I get my miners up and running

Best source to buy a power supply online? My Gridseed didn't come with one. It needs to be 12V and at least 7amp, correct?
Thanks!

If you are Dual mining it needs to be at least 12v 5amp. But for scrypt only it needs like 12v 1amp.

There is a link in the op to my post with pin outs for molex and pcie connectors.

I think its labeled making your own cables.

Hey, I have a 13 volt, 120 amp power supply. Would that work for 100 of these things? I have successfully used it on rechargeable batteries for RC cars, for charging car batteries, for jump starting a car without a battery, and for a bunch of 12 volt devices.

I'm pretty sure I can make it work with 100 gridseeds.

The only thing I could find was the "Hacking together the power" section. That section shows how to wire up a unicorn hasher(?) up to a wall socket and connect that to a barrel connector.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=494625.msg5448809#msg5448809

But I could not find how to best connect up to a standard ATX power supply. Since I'm transferring over from GPU mining, I already have 1200W power supplies ready to go and would prefer to just reuse those. Splicing the molex connector is straightforward, but not sure which is which on the barrel connectors...

Any guidance on that would be great.

So I hit a USB limit in ubuntu... I have 120 gridseed 5-chip devices plugged into one linux box and getting this message: no more free ACM devices.

So having to use another box on the rest so just running 88 now. Here is the screenshot Smiley

They won't all fit on my screen.

So does anyone know how to increase this limit on linux?

How are you not getting any hw errors? lol

Edit: Also how exactly did you plug them all in? Did you plug hubs into other hubs?

hehe.

Here is an updated screenshot. I let them run for 5 hrs and only a few HW errors. This screenshot is after running only 15 min or so.

yah I read it but I have no experience so I have no idea what your actually talking about lol

edit: I guess I was looking for something like this http://wiki.ztex.de/doku.php?id=en:ztex_boards:ztex_fpga_boards:cluster_power_supplies

Is this good enough to work for the gridseed power?

I got one of those and cut it up but the wires in it are absurdly thin. Obviously video cameras use very little power. I just binned it. Even if the wires dont get very hot there will be an impedance there which will increase noise. Not good.

does anyone no if theres a DIY guide on how to make the power cords for a modular psu for these gridseeds?

You want 2.1mmx5.5mm barrell plug. At Radio Shack, they are the Size M plugs
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103614

From your modular PSU, you want the yellow wire to connect to the middle of the plug, and the black wire to connect to the outside.
The maximum power draw of the miner is 60w (dual mining), or 5 amps at 12 volts. That would imply 11 gauge wire.
However if you mine Scrypt (litecoin) only, the power draw is 7 watts, or 0.6 amps at 12 volts. That means you can use 20 gauge wire (or lower number).

This wire would work:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036271

A 6 pin PCI-E connector is rated for 75 watts. A 8 pin PCI-E connector is rated for 150 watts. They both have 3 yellow wires. To be safe, do not try to draw more than 75 watts from a 6 pin PCI-E connector (3 miners in scrypt mode per yellow wire). Make sure you use all the black wires - A different black wire for each yellow wire.

Use a volt meter to confirm the voltage at the plug (positive is in the middle) before you plug in your miner.

If you do not like to soldier, you can use something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Gino-2-1x5-5mm-Power-Adapter-Camera/dp/B0058RLD9C

Be careful of these. They tend to be 22 gauge wire, a little thin for Gridseed:

I would be concerned about the quality of the power. How steady it is. You risk burning out the gridseeds from over volting.

Now, if you regulate it down from 13+ volts to 12 volts, that would work. But, by the time you do all that work, you might as well buy a quality PSU.
