So I hit a USB limit in ubuntu... I have 120 gridseed 5-chip devices plugged into one linux box and getting this message: no more free ACM devices.

That is a limit of USB 2.0, 127 devices, including each hub.

In theory, that is the limit of the controller, not necessarily of Linux. If all of your USB ports (on your computer) are tied to one USB controller, then there is nothing you can do - with those ports.

You can try to put in a PCI-E USB card. That may give you another 127 devices off that card.

Simply having cgminer restarting now and then does not help either, as I often need to re-plug or power cycle them, as sometimes they simply disappear from /dev/ upon restart.
Going to try connecting them to another PSU, try yet another hub, try connecting to another computer. Suspect shitty firmware/design though.

They've been running very smooth for 24 hours, 31 pieces deliver a steady 9,5-10 Mh/s. I'm using two raspberry Pi's. Cheap hubs and the controllers from Lightning Asic were the biggest problems with me before.

If you are Dual mining it needs to be at least 12v 5amp. But for scrypt only it needs like 12v 1amp.

So this charger schould be ok for only one gridseed on scrypt mode only ? (I don't want burn it)

I'm using Inland 13 port USB hub. Been using it for weeks now with no chronic problems until yesterday.
For some reason the ports are re-setting, or just quitting and leaving my gridseeds hanging at 'dispatching work to gridseed" mode but no results coming back as expected.
Every 6 or 8 hours it seems, so far but this is only the 2nd time.
It didn't do that while I was mining on LiteCoinPool.org. Started doing it after I pointed them to ScryptGuild.com - Not sure if this is the cause possibly? That's weird, if it is the cause.
I'm using Win7 on an Lenovo R400 laptop. I doubt that's what's causing it....

It should work i think when i did the math it was 0.6a but you would be better with 12v 5a power supply. If you over volt you destroy the gridseed example anything above 12v. If you under amp you destroy the power supply and that in turn may cause a problem with the gridseed. You need to make sure it is center positive and gridseed can use either 2.1mmx5.5 or 2.5x5.5 end.

I want to sell my GPUs and buy more than one GridSeed,and I can buy in my country charger such like that form amazon link under 1$ per pcs. (charger voltage is stabilized),and this is more profitable from me buy several chargers under 1$ per pcs. than 12V 5A charger or PSU.

It gets more complicated after that, since you can only have 2 levels of hubs on the Pi, and the 10- and 13-port hubs already have 2 levels inside them. does anyone no if theres a DIY guide on how to make the power cords for a modular psu for these gridseeds? I read part 3 of this guide and it doesn't help me because I'm ignorant with this kind of stuff and require pics with steps lol This guide is good an i'll donate as soon as I get my miners up and running

I think its labeled making your own cables.

The only thing I could find was the "Hacking together the power" section. That section shows how to wire up a unicorn hasher(?) up to a wall socket and connect that to a barrel connector.

But I could not find how to best connect up to a standard ATX power supply. Since I'm transferring over from GPU mining, I already have 1200W power supplies ready to go and would prefer to just reuse those. Splicing the molex connector is straightforward, but not sure which is which on the barrel connectors...

Any guidance on that would be great.

I have 2 miners atm so I am using ide molex entension cables I had lying around to power both and if need be the controller.

you can wire that pcie cable to your barrel connector,  the inside barrel is V+ if you have a barrell connector the and if the wires are not color coded inside then on the outside on one of the black's there should be whitish-grey stripes or a solid line, it may be clear it may be faint, but this is the V+ line of the barrell connector. The link I posted above will tell u the scematics of your PCIE, but it is fairly straight forward, you have 3 yellow which ar 12V+ and 4 grounds. Do not wire a control board to this as it only requires 5V+

I'll be building an Rpi from scratch, using windows, with raspbian today or tomorrow and moving a 10 gridseed pack into a short and compact 2U rackmount chassis (20 would fit in a long 2U chassis) I'll add both to the guide.

I got to the download raspbian image part before I realized I don't have an SD card reader in front of me

I don't think that hub has enough power to work correctly.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
